(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Computer Science

The aim of the project is to make a formal counterpart in a proof assistant of an existing overview article of a proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem. In this formalisation, proofs that are not in the paper will be omitted for now. However, all definitions that are needed to write the formal statements from the paper will be fully formalised. This project will be carried out in collaboration with mathematicians from Imperial College in London and the Free University in Amsterdam.
Your teaching load may be up to 10% of your appointment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Characterising Magnetic Order in Novel Quantum Phases of 2D Materials

The goal of this PhD project is to investigate the magnetic order in different quantum phases of 2D materials at the atomic scale, and to shed light on the role of electron correlations. The approach is to use a combination of ultra-high resolution SPM techniques.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD Candidates in Computational Physics/Chemistry

The first project has its application in materials research. It concerns the extension, implementation and application of the GIPAW method to calculate NMR solid state chemical shieldings. This will be implemented in the electronic structure code VASP. The method extensions are (a) for heavy nuclei (spin-orbit extension) and, most importantly, (b) to enable shielding calculations for advanced DFT functionals such as hybrid functionals (with Hartree-Fock exchange) and meta-GGAs.

The second project has its application in astrochemisty. New astronomical observations of interstellar ices require more accurate simulation methods for their interpretation. You will develop a new kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) program that allows for simulations of interstellar ices, which form in star-forming regions and are inhomogeneous and amorphous in nature

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Legal Cybersecurity and Privacy Obligations for the Internet of Things

We are looking for a PhD candidate in law. The project concerns legal cybersecurity and privacy obligations in relation to IoT devices. The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of many devices that are connected to each other and the internet. The IoT surrounds us with a network of smart, interconnected devices and services capable of sensing or even listening to requests or needs, and acting on them.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Computational Cognitive Neuroscience, Multisensory Perception, Learning and Attention

The PhD position is based in the Multisensory Perception, Learning and Attention Lab headed by Prof. Uta Noppeney at the Donders Centres for Cognitive Neuroimaging and Neuroscience. The overall goal of the lab is to understand how the brain enables us to perceive, understand and interact effectively with the multisensory world around us. To define the underlying computations and neural mechanisms we combine psychophysics, computational modelling (Bayesian, neural network) and neuroimaging (fMRI, MEG, EEG, TMS).

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Emergent Phenomena in Life-like Active Matter

In this PhD project, you will work on self-organisation of active matter that emerges from well-coordinated combinations of molecular self-assembly, chemical reactions and physicochemical phenomena such as diffusion, phase-separation, surface tension and hydrogel swelling. Using those to establish new feedback and control mechanisms, we aim to arrive at collective behaviour in active matter emerging at the mesoscale, driven by out-of-equilibrium systems that self-sustain the organisation. A good example of our philosophy – demonstrated by amphiphiles that organise themselves through self-assembly into wire-like networks that autonomously coordinate mesoscale positioning processes – can be found in our recent publication.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Social Study of Science: Error, Correction and Overpromising

The PhD project involves a qualitative social science study of scientific promising, novelty claims and discursive reframing of novelty in nanobiology. For example, the portrayal of the nanoparticle-protein corona as a radical innovation is opposed by critical nanobiologists, insisting that the protein corona is simply a continuation of colloid adsorption research. The case provides a lens to study practices of reframing, of novelty, and of the challenges that such reframing misrepresents the innovative potential of research. This project also analyses science as a social process and asks how scientists assess what forms of promising and reframing are acceptable.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate / Junior Lecturer in Methodology

The PhD project will map and assess the use of empirical research methods and intervention methods from an action research paradigm, with a central role for reflection on the role of the researcher in both the research and change process. The substantive focus is on complex decision making within organisations in the key domains that are covered by the Methodology chair: energy, mobility, diversity and health care. The overarching focus is on how this combination of methods can be applied to public and private organisations in responding to transitions.
