PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship at the SDU Climate Cluster Elite Centre CUHRE – Centre for Understanding Human Relationships with the Environment, Humanities.

The PhD scholarship will contribute to the project Cultivated Wilderness and Ecoliteracy in Denmark and more specifically to the sub-project Wilderness Narratives and Emotional Communities in Denmark: Interactions with Cultivated Wild Nature. As a PhD-student, you will develop your own research project within the framework of this subproject, collaborating closely with project PI, Laura Feldt, and the research team in the subproject. More detailed information can be gained at CUHRE’s website. As a PhD-student you will also be affiliated with the Department of Culture and Languages and the Study of Religion.

In the subproject Wilderness Narratives and Emotional Communities, we investigate interactions with cultivated wild nature in Denmark, especially practices and activities that can sustain ecoliteracy. By interactions with cultivated wild nature, we mean relations and reactions to, activities in, mediated narratives about, and emotional communities connected with biodiversity cultivation, such as rewilding, nature national parks, migrating wolves and boars, and other activities that involve interactions with cultivated wild nature – wolf safaris, outdoor enthusiast activities, forest bathing, etc., or mediated presentations of such activities in film, television, literature, or social media. Ecoliteracy means the capability and will to change society in a sustainable direction so that other life forms – non-human animals, plants, ecosystems – can thrive. In the project, we analyse both media and popular culture, leisure activities, consumption, and school activities, and we are especially interested in the roles played by emotions and narratives in current changes in human relationships with wild nature in Denmark. For more information about the framework and key concepts, contact Laura Feldt @[email protected].

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD on methane cycling in freshwater systems

The Department of Biology at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for a 3-year Ph.D. study in biogeochemistry and microbial ecology. The position is associated to a project investigating how anaerobic methane oxidation attenuates methane emissions from freshwater systems. While freshwater systems are an important source of atmospheric methane, anaerobic methane-oxidizing microbes were recently found to act as a barrier to the release of this strong greenhouse gas in some systems. Yet, the identity of these microbes and their distribution and activity across different freshwater environments is poorly understood. Filling this knowledge gap is relevant to predictions of how freshwater methane emissions respond to environmental change and to the mitigation of emissions from anthropogenically influenced systems.

The main research objective for this position is the determination of the distribution, rates, and environmental controls of anaerobic methane oxidation in a wide range of freshwater sediments. Approaches include experimental quantification of anaerobic methane oxidation using stable isotope tracing and mass spectrometry, as well as identification of key microbes through biomolecular analyses. Hence, we seek a candidate with a background in microbial or molecular biology, (bio-)geochemistry, or related fields, and with an aptitude for field work. The selected candidate will be part of the diverse and international Nordcee group at SDU and will have the opportunity to interact with project associates at Aarhus University.
