PhD position summary/title: PHD STUDENT POSITION IN FUNGAL CELL AND NETWORK BIOLOGY
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) form one of the most widespread terrestrial symbiosis on earth with the roots of host plants, known broadly as the mycorrhizal symbiosis. AMF can connect with one another and with multiple plants, forming large underground common mycorrhizal networks where carbon and nutrients are exchanged. In contrast to most organisms where a single cell carries a single nucleus, a single AMF cell holds thousands of nuclei. This mysterious multinucleate biology has generated open questions in evolutionary biology. Recent discoveries demonstrate the existence of a carefully regulated genetic system in AMF, but we still do not know how these numerous nuclei can be organized with such precision in these large interconnected cells and how interconnected strains interact with one another at the nuclear level. By intergrading advanced microscopy techniques, high throughput imaging and video and molecular tagging we will achieve a quantitative understanding of these nuclear interactions across scales.

PhD position summary/title : PHD CANDIDATE ON MRNA TRAFFICKING AND LOCAL TRANSLATION AT THE SYNAPSE
Neurons are highly polarized and interactive cells that require precise spatiotemporal regulation of their proteome for proper functioning. mRNA localization and local protein synthesis are crucial in this process and play key roles in the development and maintenance of neurons. Importantly, dysregulation of this process is increasingly implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy and Alzheimer’s disease. However, how a neuron regulates the localization of mRNAs and its translation remains poorly understood. Moreover, we know very little about the function of mRNA localization and local protein synthesis at presynaptic nerve terminals. The main focus of our research group is to understand the molecular mechanisms and functional relevance of mRNA trafficking and local translation in neuronal subcellular compartments. In particular, we are interested in the role of the endoplasmic reticulum in regulating mRNA localization and local translation. In this project, the aim is to understand the molecular mechanisms behind axonal ER-based translation and its role in presynaptic function in health and disease.

PhD position summary/title: PHD CANDIDATE BIOANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Neurodegenerative diseases are on the rise in our aging society, but effective treatments are missing, and the disease pathway is not fully understood. Several studies have connected the altered protein glycosylation to the progression of neurodegeneration, however, a causal relationship between the pathological disease progression and abnormal protein glycosylation still needs to be established. This project aims to elucidate the role of glycoproteins that interfere with disease-causing protein aggregation in the brain by establishing a structure-function relationship between protein glycosylation and glycoprotein activity.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION ‘DO COMPLEX FILM STORIES FOSTER REAL-WORLD UNDERSTANDING?’
We live in an increasingly complex world. For example, if you aim to behave environmentally friendly, should you drink plant-based milk or is it better to drink locally produced cow milk? This is not an easy answer, and the answer brings a lot of “buts” and “ifs” to the table. This, in turn, might lead to confusion or frustration, or in other complex situations may even appear threatening. At the same time, complexity is an increasingly popular trend in mainstream film and television, manifesting in narratives presenting formal‐structural narrative complexities (multiple timelines, complicated causality of events, etc.), yet attracting wide audiences. This new trend of filmic narrative complexity provides an opportunity to build evidence‐based theories of viewers’ emotional and cognitive engagement with complexity in filmic storytelling and the effect thereof on opinion formation of complex issues in the real world. In this cross‐disciplinary project, the PhD candidate will integrate theories and methods from the Humanities (film studies, cognitive narratology), Communication Science and Social Sciences (narrative engagement, media effects, public opinion formation). The current PhD vacancy focuses on real-world understanding through complex narratives in films in various social contexts (e.g., climate change).

About The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.
The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
