PhD position summary/title: PHD IN HIGHER EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT (2022-224-04694)

University educators are experts in various disciplines, but not necessarily in pedagogy. Therefore, a wide range of professional development (PD) activities have been organized to support university educators to explore and practice alternative and innovative pedagogical methods that maximize student learning.  While most current PD activities focus on supporting the enhancement of constructivism-based and student-centered learning, it is not ensured that the participants of such activities would automatically learn from these PD activities and develop anticipated practices. The linear approaches to thinking on how university educators may learn from PD activities have been criticized, Rather, the research field of how teachers learn is turning to a paradigm that perceives teacher learning as a complex matter involving multiple interacting dimensions, including individual characteristics such as motivation, interest, intentions, cognitions, efficacy, and values in teaching, which may be largely impacted by prior experiences, as well as how educators interact with students, colleagues and their institutional environment. Complex factors may influence university educators’ practice of constructivism-based and learner-centered strategies and methods, including personal factors such as motivation and beliefs about teaching and learning and institutional aspects such as facilities and policies. While educators’ pedagogical beliefs have massive impact on their activities regarding strategy choices, organizing teaching activities and assessments, Discrepancy between educators’ beliefs and practices is often observed, which may generate obstacles to the success of PD activities. In sum, teacher learning from PD activities is situated, context-bounded and culturally sensitive, which calls for further research attention based on mixed methodological designs.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN 6G SHORT RANGE SUBNETWORK FOR EXTREME CONNECTIVITY (8-22049)

Future 6th Generation (6G) radio systems are expected to bridge the gap between digital and physical worlds by supporting services such as holographic presence, extreme virtual/augmented reality with tactile feedback and high accuracy sensing.  It is visioned that 6G will consist of a set of specialized subnetworks, where one of them is likely to be a “6G short range subnetwork for extreme communication”. This subnetwork will provide a localized versatile wireless connection between devices such as; XR equipment, glucose monitoring and muscle haptic implants on and inside humans, equipment inside intelligent machines/robots, or even equipment inside vehicles and airplanes where it may replace the existing wired network normally connecting the engine controls, parking sensors and anti-lock brake system.

PhD position summary/title: GENOPSLAG: PH.D.-STIPENDIAT MED FOKUS PÅ SAMFUNDSUDVIKLING OG TEKNOLOGIUDVIKLING I ET SAMFUND 5.0 INITIATIV (2022-224-04494G)

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN DETERMINATION OF PROPERTY BOUNDARIES (20-22051)

The PhD project will center on determination of property boundaries and especially the redetermination of existing properties. The current legislation on this and the main studies of determination of property boundaries are old and in the meantime surveying methods have changed significantly and society in general has developed. Thus, praxis has followed but theory, evaluation, and systematic investigation to support praxis is missing. There is there for a need to uncover how things are done today, and possibly further to make evidence-based recommendations about how it could or should be done? Several approaches are possible within this main framing.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN GENOMIC POTENTIAL AND REGULATION OF EPS SYNTHESIS IN ACTIVATED SLUDGE BACTERIA (18-22052)

The PhD stipend is announced as part of REThiNk, a project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation: Recovery of extracellular polymers from wastewater treatment residuals as a new circular biopolymer. The overall goal is to promote the transition of wastewater treatment plants into production facilities by turning excess activated sludge into valuable biopolymers via extraction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) found in the biomass. The research of this PhD project will primarily focus on the development and application of tools to mine high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes for biosynthetic gene clusters associated with the expression of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Knowledge about EPS biosynthetic gene clusters provides new possibilities for genome-resolved meta-omics, making it possible to study which bacteria and EPS systems are active and how they are regulated in response to environmental conditions.

The interactions of the clinicians will include virtual assistants in tandem with AI-driven dashboards based on the world’s largest stroke registry. The four year EU Horizon project that is funding the PhD is highly interdisciplinary and supported by collaborators providing expertise on legal and ethical considerations, natural language processing, data mining, data interoperability according to FAIR principles, and access to patients. The PhD position follows a 4+4 semester model meaning that during the first two years (four semesters) the student will be half-time working on or rather finishing their MSc and the other half on their PhD. The remaining four semesters are spent full-time on the PhD.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN VISUAL THINKING FOR SERVICE SYSTEMS DESIGN (7-22047)

The PhD Stipend is partly funded by the T-factor project – Participatory Futures. Co-creating cities with temporary urbanism (https://www.t-factor.eu/)  with the purpose of applying visual thinking as a way to conduct a participatory design inquiry, explore and represent complex (urban) systems. The overall theme of the stipend is that of visual thinking in participatory processes in service systems design. The purpose of the PhD is to create research-based knowledge about theories and methods on how visual thinking can be used to support broader participation across urban and service design processes. The intention is to explore novel designerly ways to more collaboratively envision, describe and explain how complex systems and related services work. The PhD should explore such theoretical and methodological aspects through a case study setting (exploring how visual thinking can be applied in an urban environment undergoing societal change).

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN CLOUD SYSTEMS FOR SENSITIVE DATA STORAGE, ANALYSIS, AND VISUALIZATION (8-22048)

In connection with the EU Horizon project I3LUNG: Integrative science, Intelligent data platform for Individualized LUNG cancer care with Immunotherapy, we seek a PhD student that will oversee the specifications, design, and development of a cloud platform to handle the storage and processing of sensitive clinical data. The aim of the I3LUNG project is to develop AI-based tools to assist in improving survival and quality of life, preventing undue toxicity, and reducing treatment costs for lung cancer patients. I3LUNG adopts a two-pronged approach: setting up a transnational platform of available data from hundreds of patients in order to validate the AI models, and generating a multi-omics prospective data collection in a subset of these Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) patients. A psychological study will help in defining the impact of AI-guided decisions on patients, eliciting their preference, and physicians comparing AI with Human Intuition. The final goal is the construction of a novel integrated AI-assisted Data Storage and Elaboration Platform backed up by Trustworthy Explainable AI methodology, ensuring its accessibility and ease of use by healthcare providers and patients alike.
