(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Tracing electron-induced surface reactions of organometallic adsorbates for 3D nanoprinting

The most crucial challenge arising in 3D nanoprinting with focused electron beams of today relates to the metal purity of printed material. This project follows a combined experimental and theoretical approach to achieve a breakthrough in obtaining clean metal deposits from electron induced dissociation reactions with adsorbed metal organic molecules. The experimental approach comprises the extraction and identification of ionized fragments during the non-thermal electron induced dissociation reactions by novel process-integrated in-situ time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The integration mechanisms of organic elements will be studied as function of process parameters. The theoretical approach will employ continuum modelling and atomistic simulations to include molecule and fragment surface kinetics: adsorption, desorption, dissociation, and diffusion.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Microanalysis of Magnesium Biocorrosion

Project context: The performance, durability and sustainability of engineering materials, as applied in e.g. medical technologies and related sensing devices, critically depend on the (electro)chemical reactivity and passivation (surficial oxide formation) of the metal or alloy surface in its service environment. Within the frame of an FWF-SNF lead agency international collaboration, doctoral positions at Empa and at the Medical university of Graz in Austria will investigate Mg alloy biodegradation processes. To obtain a full understanding of the degradation mechanisms, the scientific challenge is to mimic with advanced in vitro methodologies, the environment-dependent (in contact with bone or tissues) in vivo degradation. For this purpose, the PhD students in Graz will gather information on in vivo implant corrosion and physiological parameters near the implant.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in data for circular buildings

You will work on developing a computational design method for direct feedback on both embodied and operational impacts of design-decisions concerning the reuse of building materials. Combining tools from computer science and environmental architecture, you will look at optimization methods for finding the perfect fit for waste materials in an urban context, in order to lower waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, and resource depletion. To do so, you will need to collaborate closely with industry in order to assess the condition of existing building materials using digital, non-destructive assessment tools. You will publish in scientific journals and conferences and present at public events for the general public.

Deadline : January 31th 2022.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student to work on Wearable Luminescent Solar Concentrators

Project description: In this project, we will continue the research described above. It will contain both a scientific and an applied research component. We want to further investigate the energy transfer among fluorophores in APCNs, including the use of quantum dots and perovskites. We will study the effect of APCN formulation and morphology on its mechanical, adhesive, and optical properties, and how it steers the energy transfer. The project will also be dedicated to investigating demonstrators of wearable LSCs, by integrating the best-developed materials with flexible solar cells.
