(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellowship in Geological Storage of Hydrogen

The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the following project “Geological Storage of Hydrogen in Salt Caverns: Screening, Interactions and Failure Mechanisms”.

Geological subsurface storage of hydrogen has been the topic of interest in recent years given the demands and restrictions for gigaton storage sites. Salt caverns are perhaps the best subsurface geological sites for hydrogen storage given the long, and good experience of oil and gas storage in such caverns across Europe and USA. However, they are subjected to geomechanical fatigue during injection/withdrawal and may be impacted by the presence of impurities in the composition of gas, water and rock. Salt caverns may also suffer from integrity issues and lose hydrogen due to geochemical and geomechanical interactions.

(10) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellowship in Archaeology / Late Medieval History

The project «Viking beacons – Militarism in northern Europe» will study beacons; the Vikings warning or signalling system for imminent threats. Traces of these warning systems based on light signals are important documentations of the Vikings’ fears and preparedness. The main hypothesis is that the Vikings highly advanced form of civil defence was an important driving force in the shaping of centralised power in early historic Europe (AD 500-1600). The primary research question is what was the role of war in the creation, consolidation and maintenance of collective identities, emergent polities and kingdoms in early medieval northern European populations and communities.

(11) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellowship in Carbon Capture and Storage Technology

Climate change is a fact that urges immediate action and requires applied research.  Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a viable option, which has shown its potential.  Wellbore integrity is the core for a safe and reliable CCS process to securely store the captured CO2 underground with an eternal perspective.  Portland cement, which is the prime material used for zonal isolation, contains up to 60% CaO. Exposure of this CaO to CO2 and H2S may lead to a series of reactions that can cause deterioration of the cement.  In addition, production of Portland cement is considered to contribute up to 8% of the global CO2 emission.
