Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in drone-based greenhouse gas measurements over inland waters
Most rivers are heavily influenced by humans. In many places, rivers are therefore being restored to promote water quality and biological diversity. Construction of wetlands and dam removal are two common measures, and both lead to an increased abundance of macrophytes, i.e. plants in or near water. Macrophytes can emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases, but at the same time also bind carbon and thus constitute a carbon sink. The CLIMIPHY project aims to create new knowledge about the climate footprint of macrophytes that gives river restoration professionals the opportunity to restore watercourses in a way that favors biodiversity and water quality, with as little climate footprint as possible. The postdoctoral researcher will work in an exciting sub-project that uses new drone technology to perform field measurements the emission of greenhouse gases from river restoration areas. The work takes place in close collaboration with other project team members, and under joint supervision together with meteorologists at the Department of Earth Sciences: https://www.uu.se/en/department/earth-sciences/research/air-water-and-landscape-science/meteorology

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in nuclear science using fast neutrons
Your main tasks will be to finalize the NESSA 14-MeV neutron facility and contribute to developing the experimental program at NESSA. Neutrons are a key player in nuclear applications. The availability of neutron sources is especially important for developing and testing detectors for nuclear physics experiments and applications, development and testing of nuclear instruments for verification of nuclear safeguards and disarmament, radiation-shielding studies, development and verification of simulation tools for neutron transports, and irradiation of material and electronics. After the closing of several research reactors and accelerator-based neutron sources (e.g. The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala), there is a current lack of neutron facilities in the Nordic countries.
The NESSA facility is located in the FREIA hall at Ångström laboratory in Uppsala. It is planned to be equipped with an intense, 10^10 n/s DT generator that needs to be procured. For testing existing installations in the bunker, a weaker DT generator will be installed in early 2025.
In this project, we test NESSA with the weaker generator, procure a commercially available strong DT generator, and commission the facility. You will work together with researchers from research groups at the division and other interested partners to develop and perform, e.g., test experiments related to fission and fusion research, detector development, electronic irradiations, material analysis, and educational activities for students and industrial partners.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Materials Physics
We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong background in software development, or software developer with a strong interest in science. You will join a new project, within which applied statistics and information theory is used to quantify the information content of neutron reflectivity datasets. Using this, we are able to optimize the design of experiments and to make previously impossible experiments possible, as well as to run existing experiments faster and better.
In a facility where a typical experiment lasts few days, costs tens of thousands of pounds/Euros and takes 6+ months to apply for, any improvements to the experiment are of large value. The effort will be based on an existing code-base we have developed to design optimal thin film structures for a given purpose. These structures will be fabricated by other members of the collaboration and measured using a variety of methods including neutron reflectivity experiments. Participation and collaboration with all other parts of the project is strongly encouraged and if the candidate chooses, they can participate in the large-scale facility experiments.
The code-base is released as an open-source project, with an emphasis on sustainable software engineering (https://github.com/jfkcooper/HOGBEN) and has two journal articles published. Significant development of the capabilities of the code-base is required. These will include improvements to the experimental design code, as well as improving the data analysis, applying Bayesian methods for extracting parameter uncertainties and model selection. The developments will allow the entire collaboration to move forward, suggesting optimal materials systems to be investigated and designing experiments for the other nodes of the project.
The position is based in Sweden but involves shorter as well as extended stays in the UK and France, working at ISIS and ILL. Visits to ESS are also assumed. There will be the opportunity for overseas travel to meet international collaborators, and to present the work at workshops/conferences.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Applied Mechanics on damage coupled diffusion modelling
You will be responsible for developing a damage coupled diffusion finite element model that captures the progressive destruction of cell walls during chemical delignification as well as the evolution of diffusion coefficients as a function of the damage. A finite element representation of real wood microstructure will be constructed based on XRT data, and delignification as well as damage evolution will be simulated. For model calibration and verification, laboratory permeation experiments will be designed and carried out.
In addition to research, some participation in supervision of doctoral students, master’s and project students as well as communication of research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are also included as important aspects of the employment. Some participation in undergraduate teaching may also be included. You are also expected to contribute to applications for external research funds.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
