(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post-Doc or Scientist in the area of Functional Vitrimers (a)

The position will associate to our Additives and Chemistry Group in the laboratory of Advanced fibers. The group is well established internationally in polymer additive chemistry. A more recent focus of the group is the development of sustainable polymers. To strengthen activities in this area, we investigate development of functional epoxy based vitrimers. Epoxy resin are commonly used in composite manufacturing and at the end of life they are either incinerated or landfilled, leading to pollution problems and loss of useful resources. Recently we have invented a recyclable flame retardant epoxy vitrimers which shows promise in the development of fire safe fiber reinforced composites and self healing coatings. The proposed position will address in detail the polymer structure-material properties relationship evaluation and full chemical recycling of such vitrimers. In addition, new chemistries based on polyesters, polyimines, vinylogous urethane etc will be explored.

Empa’s Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics is involved in the scientific research, development and characterization of advanced ceramics, composites and inorganic powder-based materials for structural and functional applications.
 
In this project with prestigious project partners, you will develop, study and optimize an advanced nanostructured composite material. Starting from a raw powder provided by an external project partner, you will develop a processing and modification strategy to prepare the powder and/or powder mixture for FAST/SPS consolidation. Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience in colloidal processing, reactive and SPS sintering will be key assets to this end, with a keen interest in solid-state physics of further advantage.

You will optimize, characterize and up-scale an advanced material system to gather the treatability data required to design reliable drinking water filtration products. The goal is to design and specify the complete material/product fabrication process chain to deliver a product with the technological readiness level needed to move to the product certification and market introduction phase upon project end. Water filtration performance relying particularly on material characteristics, their effect on viral and bacterial removal performance will have to be tested and material as well as produce specifications defined accordingly. Upon success, the ideal candidate will follow-up and create a venture to bring the product to the market.

The Empa Laboratory of Cellulose & Wood Materials invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship position on biopolymer-based materials for battery electrodes and green batteries. Together with our team of experienced scientists and industry partners, you will develop a new generation of green and sustainable binder materials enabling energy efficient processing of batteries. This project bridges our activities in the fields of biopolymers and composite processing and will be carried out in a framework of a large national project in close collaboration with the Empa Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion. Combining fundamental and applied science, the goal is to develop highly functional and industrially relevant material solutions, which may be implemented as commercial products.
