(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post Doctoral Associate, Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering

The successful applicants will focus on system-level design and optimization, techno-economic assessment (TEA), and life cycle assessment (LCA) of Direct Air Capture (DAC), Enhanced Mineralization (EM), or biomass-based (e.g., BiCRS, BECCS) technologies. They will work closely with project investigators, who have expertise in the science and engineering of DAC and EM technologies and in LCA and TEA of emerging technologies and systems, to convert early-stage technology concepts into practical systems and assess the prospective environmental and economic performance of such systems. They will primarily conduct modeling studies but will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers conducting laboratory experiments. In addition, they will have the opportunity to mentor graduate (PhD and MSc) students working on related projects. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Post Doctoral Scholar, Libin Cardiovascular Institute, Cumming School of Medicine

The Alberta Provincial Project for Outcomes Assessment in Coronary Heart Disease (APPROACH) and the Libin Cardiovascular Institute at the University of Calgary are accepting applications for a Fellowship in pragmatic clinical trials and implementation science, to be based in Calgary, Alberta. APPROACH is both a longstanding cardiac registry and a collaborative network of researchers and cardiovascular care clinicians located in the cities of Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. APPROACH investigators and trainees have access to rich clinical and administrative data sources to perform high-quality cardiovascular epidemiological and health services research. We also work in partnership with clinicians, patients, and operational leaders to design, test, and implement innovative eHealth decision support tools for cardiac care. APPROACH trainees and junior faculty have previously published papers as first authors in a variety of major journals including Circulation, JAMA, JAMA-Internal Medicine, JAHA, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and many others (see www.approach.org for more information). The Libin Cardiovascular Institute is a virtual institute that coordinates all cardiovascular science research, education and patient care in Southern Alberta. Its 1500 members are working towards a shared vision to lead and transform healthcare using precision cardiovascular health platforms (see www.libin.ucalgary.ca). This two-year appointment will train an emerging leader in pragmatic clinical trials and implementation science for innovative eHealth applications developed by our group. The two key areas of focus are: (1) using Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) as tools to inform and improve cardiac care delivery, and (2) evaluation of novel electronic tools to support shared decision-making. The successful candidate will have the opportunity for first-hand experience with funded research initiatives directly related to one of both of the key focus areas, and will interact with a team of experts in the required domains. In addition, there will be numerous opportunities to conduct related analyses using existing linked databases and implementation platforms, including the APPROACH provincial registry of clinical and angiographic data, Alberta Health Services Administrative data, and clinical information systems.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Associate in Adult Cancer Survivorship, Cumming School of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing

The postdoctoral scholar will use mixed methods research (quantitative and qualitative) to evaluate health outcomes of cancer survivors using administrative health data, conduct patient-oriented research focused on pancreatic cancer, and evaluate decision making along the cancer trajectory using scoping reviews and/or surveys and focus groups. The postdoctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Colleen Cuthbert, assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing, Canada Research Chair in Patient and Family Centered Cancer Survivorship, and Dr. Winson Cheung, Professor and Lead for Health Services Research for Oncology in Alberta. Drs Cuthbert and Cheung are health services researchers conducting studies focused broadly on health outcomes in cancer patients.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Scholar, Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Cumming School of Medicine

  • Support the development and implementation of the EDI Action Plan

This is a posting for a post-doctoral scholar to pursue scientific goals associated with clinical diagnostics research. Specifically, the position will surround developing and applying machine learning and AI algorithms to digital imaging of pathology specimens, biomarkers, genomics and clinical factors to predict cancer and other disease risk.  The successful applicant will work at the interface of one of Canada’s leading research universities, one of the largest clinical laboratories in North America, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Alberta’s growing biotechnology sector. (06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Brain Aging and Dementia, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, Cumming School of Medicine

Dr. Zahinoor Ismail, Professor at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and O’Brien Institute of Public Health at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, is currently seeking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on longitudinal studies on brain aging. These studies include prospective cohorts such as CAN-PROTECT (a 20-year online study recruiting 10,000 participants Canada-wide for annual assessments of cognition, behaviour, function, quality of life, and dementia caregiving related features) and BAMBI (a 10-year study assessing biomarkers, metabolomics, and gut biome in aging). Additionally there are opportunities to analyze cognitive, neuroimaging, and biomarker data from current studies and legacy datasets including ADNI, NACC, and COMPASS-ND amongst others. Data literacy and statistical knowledge are essential (we use R), and familiarity with survival analyses and generalized linear models is a benefit. Content knowledge in aging, neuroscience, psychiatry, or psychology is an asset, and there are opportunities to interact directly or remotely with participants and study partners. Writing skills are helpful, as these are rich studies, with many publications possible. This position offers multiple areas of growth and productivity, to pave the way to an academic career.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Associate, Cryptography, Department of Computer Science

Applications are invited from qualified candidates for two Postdoctoral Associate appointments in Cryptography for a period of three years. The sucessful incumbants will work under the supervision of Prof. Rei Safavi-Naini, Prof. Barry Sanders, and Prof. Daniel Oblak. Expertise in cryptography is essential, and knowledge of quantum theory is a strong advantage. The focus of the positions is on quantum-resistant, and quantum-enabled cryptography, and is funded by an NSERC Alliance Quantum Consortia grant entitled: “Accelerating the transition to quantum-resistant cryptography.” A Ph.D. degree and evidence of excellence in research are required. Successful applicants are expected to maintain an active program of research and participate in research activities with academic and industry partners in the grant. The annual salary is within the range of $55,000 – $65,000 (CAD) depending on the qualifications. The positions are available immediately.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar, Transplant Medicine, Cumming School of Medicine

The post-doctoral scholar will be supervised by the core Transplant Wellness team, including Dr. Stefan Mustata (Cumming School of Medicine), Dr. Kelly Burak (Cumming School of Medicine) and Dr. Nicole Culos-Reed (Faculty of Kinesiology). The postdoctoral scholar will perform research, including management of the TWP database, a prospective cohort, as well as interventions that will be examined with effectiveness-implementation frameworks. TWP is designed to gather best evidence to inform practice that ultimately improves the wellness and quality of life of transplant patients. Within this role, the postdoctoral scholar will be encouraged and supported to build their independent research program, including applying for external awards locally and nationally. The postdoctoral scholar will lead research, under the supervision of the TWP core team, which will include assisting with writing grant applications, performing systematic reviews, analyzing the prospective cohort dataset, conceptualizing, and designing, executing, analyzing, and disseminating the findings from effectiveness-implementation research studies (including writing manuscripts and presenting findings to stakeholders). The postdoctoral scholar will also liaise with all relevant stakeholders including patient partners, clinical team members, and researchers across the TWP.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Scholar, Department of Paediatrics

We are seeking a motivated and hard-working postdoctoral scholar to lead an interdisciplinary research project to develop training course for youth to be engaged in health services research and work on patient engagement in health services research agenda. The successful candidate will work directly with researchers in the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine, Alberta SPORU SUPPORT Patient Engagement team and Continuing Education PaCER operations team.  Reporting to the Primary Investigators (PI), Dr. Maria J Santana (Department of Paediatrics). The position requires independent analysis and research, within a team approach in a fast moving and changing environment, often involving multiple stakeholders. The PDS will contribute to refining the research questions and methods and will have the opportunity to lead a multi-pronged program of research to assess and development curriculum for patient research partners. Quantitative skills will apply statistical approaches to survey data analysis, and qualitative skills will draw focus groups and interview approaches. Research outcomes will inform the science of patient-oriented research (POR) and the development of a curriculum for youth living with chronic conditions to support them in becoming patient research partners. In addition, the PDS will mentor junior students working on the project. The principal investigators will regularly review work to ensure quality and completeness and to advise on complex matters and to provide feedback.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doctoral Scholar, Department of Psychology

The Internal Attention Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate with a background in cognitive neuroscience and interest in internal attention (also referred to as mind wandering). The candidate will work closely with Dr. Julia Kam in a collaborative environment within the Department of Psychology and Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary, with opportunities to work with international collaborators. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment with a team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, and computer scientists on several funded projects that aim to discover the neurophysiological basis of spontaneous thought, using intracranial EEG, machine learning and potentially stimulation approaches. Their primary role will involve executing the funded projects (i.e. acquisition of intracranial EEG from epilepsy patients, analysis of intracranial EEG data, development of analytic tools, scientific dissemination). With access to state-of-the-art neuroimaging facilities and academic resources, the candidate will have the opportunity to pursue collaborative and self-directed projects beyond the funded research.
