PhD position summary/title: PHD IN PRECISION TRAPPED-ION QUANTUM METROLOGY
The Standard Model of physics is still far from complete: there is an unexplained asymmetry between matter and antimatter, gravity is not included and dark matter and dark energy are not understood. In this project you will develop a trapped-ion quantum sensor based on Ba+ to investigate these intriguing problems. You will build-up a vacuum apparatus and various laser systems to trap, manipulate and detect single ions. You will implement advanced experimental methods to cool ions to near the motional ground state in the trap and reach long interrogation times. You will explore techniques developed in the field of quantum information science to further improve the measurement sensitivity of the sensor. You will apply the developed techniques to determine isotopic shifts of narrow transitions in Ba+ to search for yet undiscovered interactions between electrons and neutrons mediated by a hypothetical new boson.

PhD position summary/title: PHD CANDIDATE MOLECULAR PHARMACOLOGY-MOLECULAR NEUROSCIENCE
We are seeking applicants for a PhD position in GPCR molecular pharmacology or molecular neuroscience to study an orphan GPCR as potential drug target in the rare genetic brain disease Megalencephalic Leukoencephalopathy with subcortical Cysts (MLC), wherein mechanisms to regulate brain volume are disrupted. Children affected with MLC face a life of increasing motor and cognitive handicap. Drug treatment is currently unavailable for this rare disease. The orphan GPCR was recently identified by researchers of Pediatric Neurology (AUMC) as drug target in a subgroup of MLC patients. GPCRs are cell surface proteins that respond to external stimuli and considered to be exceptionally suited as drug targets.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION “UNRAVELING LATE-LIFE TRAJECTORIES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY”
Are you interested in studying the role of physical activity in health and functioning of older adults, and do you find joy in the methodological challenge of unraveling this on the basis of longitudinal data? At the Department of Health Sciences we are seeking a PhD candidate to work on a project aimed at improving our understanding of the relationship between physical activity and healthy aging. Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION: ULTRAFAST INFRARED MICROSCOPY FOR APPLICATIONS IN BIOPHOTONICS
You will develop a novel infrared microscope enabled by femtosecond pulses in the context of a recently awarded ERC grant (PIRO). The envisioned platform combines ultrashort infrared pulses with visible read out: you will develop it and tailor-make the necessary light sources based on a high-power Yb-laser. Once operational, your phototransient microscope will unlock thus far unavailable imaging capabilities: it will enable high-throughput vibrational imaging with sub-diffraction limited spatial resolution. Together, we will then capitalize on this technological advantage to address unmet challenges in biophotonics: from heat-transport in biological matter to antibiotic resistance in bacteria.

PhD position summary/title: PHD HORIZON EUROPE MSCA DOCTORAL NETWORK “MELOMANES”*
A single therapy is not efficient to tackle metastatic melanoma and a combination of therapies is thus emerging as a necessity to efficiently eradicate all cancer cells. Recently, the development of immunotherapies has shown promises, in particular chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells. Nevertheless, the physical barriers represented by cellular and non-cellular components of the tumor microenvironment combined to the abnormal tumor vasculature and high interstitial fluid pressure, hamper an efficient tumor infiltration of CAR-T cells. In this context, thanks to a network of 18 partners (including 10 non-academic partners), MELOMANES aims to train 12 doctoral researchers for the development of a combined therapy exploiting the properties of magnetic nanoparticles to induce damage on the tumor microenvironment by magnetic and optic hyperthermia in order to facilitate the infiltration of CAR-T cells. Research and transferable training of the doctoral researchers will be performed in a highly interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and international environment. In addition to acquiring skills related to the research project, they will be trained also in open science, communication and dissemination, responsible research and innovation, circular economy, ethics, data management, entrepreneurship, marketing, intellectual property, and gender dimension in research. Their competences will be validated through certification and qualification examination, allowing a new generation of highly skilled doctoral researchers to emerge with a high-level training in particular in the multidisciplinary field of nanomedicine.

PhD position summary/title: PHD (4 YEARS) POSITION “UNDERSTANDING AND IMPROVING DECISION MAKING IN PERSONNEL SELECTION
Organizations typically use multiple assessment methods (e.g., tests and interviews) to predict candidates’ future job performance and to make selection decisions. Subsequently, most decision makers combine the information using their expert judgment, which is known as holistic prediction. Alternatively, an algorithm could be used to combine information, which is known as mechanical prediction. Mechanical prediction results in more valid job performance predictions than holistic predictions by experts, mainly because holistic predictions are noisy: decision makers combine information inconsistently in their mind. Algorithm use could eliminate noise and hence improve selection decisions. Yet, decision makers rarely use algorithms to make selection decisions. Furthermore, when an algorithm is available, decision makers deviate from its predictions, which reduces predictive accuracy compared to consistent algorithm use.

About The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.
The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
