PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics with optical diagnostics of CO2 and nitrogen cycles
The project focuses on developing a process for handling CO2 and nitrogen using renewable biomass as raw material. The process includes pyrolysis of biomass, a new combustion concept (so-called MILD combustion), and reforming added CO2 to generate syngas as fuel. The pyrolysis of biomass also generates biochar, a porous material that can absorb nitrogen, which can then be returned to the soil. The tasks consist of experimental studies of pyrolysis, the combustion process, and biochar. We are therefore looking for someone who has a genuine interest in developing and applying advanced optical and laser-based measurement methods to contribute to solving global problems in the areas of environment, energy, and climate.
The project is financed by the European Innovation Council (EIC) and is part of a project portfolio containing seven other projects with the same overall objective in such a project portfolio. The project consists of partners from CNR-STEMS (in Italy), DTU (Denmark), and RISE (Sweden). The doctoral student will work at the Division of Combustion Physics. Collaboration with colleagues at the Department of Energy Sciences and with international partners in the project will form a central part of the work. There are good opportunities to create an international network with researchers and other doctoral students within the project and its other sister projects that are part of the EIC portfolio.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in bioinformatics
We are looking for a full-time bioinformatics PhD student to be involved in the Novo Nordisk funded project: ‘Development of phage biocontrol to overcome the antiphage defense system arsenal of phytopathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium’. This is a project led by Ville Friman in the University of Helsinki, with Vasili Hauryliuk and Gemma C. Atkinson in the University of Lund as co-investigators. This position will be based in the Atkinson lab.
Due to a lack of efficient control methods, plant-pathogenic bacteria threaten safe and stable food production. This project will develop a novel biocontrol method against the plant-pathogenic bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum by employing its natural viral enemies, phages. While phages are highly pathogen-specific and safe to the environment, they can become inefficient due to the rapid development of phage resistance. This project will overcome this by identifying antiphage defence systems in R. solanacearum, and then isolating phages that can counteract these defences by escaping their recognition or by deploying their own counter-defence systems

PhD position summary/title: 1 Doctoral studentship in Human Geography
The research must be conducted within human geography and connect to the research project “A just TRANSport TRANSformation? A TRANSnational, FEMinist analysis of the social reproduction of the lithium and copper supply chain. TRANS-FEM”. The goal of the research project is to examine through a feminist mixed-methods approach the transnational labor dynamics of the lithium and copper supply chains from the places of extraction and export: Antofagasta, Chile to the place of manufacture of e-batteries: Skellefteå, Sweden. The PhD candidate is expected to engage with research on how an EU green energy transition should address socio environmental fallouts and forms of labor exploitation associated with the extraction of critical minerals and the production of e-batteries in Europe. Most importantly, this project will question whether the green transition can truly be a global affair and bring about social and environmental justice in the form of fair and equitable inclusion for the most marginalized groups in improving their wellbeing.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in public health with focus in health economics
The doctoral project is within the field of public health with a focus on health economics. We are seeking a motivated doctoral student with a background in economics and good knowledge of econometrics.
Medication reviews reduces the use of inappropriate medications, which is a common problem among older individuals in the population. People with dementia is a particularly vulnerable group for whom medication reviews are of crucial importance. The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare has specific regulations regarding who should undergo a medication review and when. Due to the decentralized healthcare system in Sweden, many regions have their own rules and regulations, and there are differences between regions regarding who should receive a basic or comprehensive medication review. There are also variations in terms of which healthcare professionals should perform these reviews. However, research is limited regarding which model is (most) cost-effective and contributes to reducing inequality among individuals living with dementia.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in polymer technology with a focus on organic/green chemistry and polymer chemistry
The transition from today’s fossil-based plastics to tomorrow’s bio-based materials from renewable resources means a major research challenge for the future. The doctoral project is aimed at synthesis of new monomers and polymers from renewable resources, as well as characterization of structure and material properties of bio-based polymers. The main goal is to develop new synthesis strategies and new knowledge about how, for example, different bio-based polyesters and polyacrylates should be molecularly tailored to meet the requirements of various industrial applications where plastics from fossil raw materials are currently used. The experimental work includes chemical synthesis of monomers originating from lignocellulose via the principles of green chemistry, development of polymerization methods, preparation of new polymeric materials, analysis of mechanical and thermal properties, as well as processability and recyclability. The project is partly carried out in collaboration with industry and international partners. The position will involve a limited number of trips to participate in various meetings and research activities.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Astronomy and Astrophysics
The formation of galaxies is a very active field in astrophysics. Thanks to telescopes such as JWST and ALMA, we can now observe distant galaxies with increasing precision. Along with spectroscopic and astrometric studies of the Milky Way, where Lund is a world leader, this opens up the potential for a better understanding of how galaxies evolve. To achieve this, observations must be compared with theoretical models. At the division of astrophysics, we use supercomputer simulations to study the physical processes that shape the life of galaxies, from the Big Bang to today.
The doctoral student will work within research areas focused on computer simulations of galaxy formation and evolution. The work will involve designing and conducting new high-resolution models of galaxy disks to understand in detail how the interstellar medium evolves, as well as how star formation occurs in different galactic environments.
