PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarships (2) in Cyber-Security and Cyber-Deception – DTU Compute

We are looking for two bright and motivated PhD students for two 3-year fully funded PhD positions starting 1 June 2024 (negotiable). The project is financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark, and it is a collaboration between DTU, the University of Cambridge (UK), the Royal Holloway University of London (UK), and Stony Brook University (USA). It is an excellent opportunity to be involved in advanced research on cyber-security and cyber-deception, with important practical applications.

The two positions are part of the project Loki: Situational aware collaborative bio-inspired cyber-deception. This project, inspired by Norse mythology, with Loki being a shape-shifter god and a master of trickery, aims at redefining and evolving the emerging field of cyber-deception. Here, we attempt to deceive attackers by creating fake vulnerable systems that are aware of their surroundings and are constantly shifting. The project takes inspiration from nature (e.g., from the mimicry phenomenon) to synthesize sophisticated deception.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarships (2) on Theory, Fabrication, and Optical Characterization of Subdiffraction Photonic Cavities – DTU Electro

DTU Electro are looking for two bright and motivated PhD students within subdiffraction cavities based on silicon bowties with the overarching goal of exploring new regimes of light-matter interaction.

Are you a talented, self-motivated, and team-oriented person, who thrives in a collaborative world leading research environment and eager to contribute to developing the next generation of scientific machine learning tools for power systems? If you think optical resonators play a central role in wide areas of research and technology with applications ranging from lasers to enhanced and controlled light-matter interaction in quantum technologies, then you are just the candidate we are looking for.

Recent research developments have shown that it is possible to confine light at length scales much below the conventional diffraction limit in semiconductors. Previously, this was only considered possible in metals through the excitation of plasmons, which unfortunately are associated with large optical losses.

These beneficial properties rely on the cavities confining light in both real and frequency space. This new discovery opens tremendous possibilities for realizing a new regime of strong light-matter interaction and has enabled an ERC Consolidator Grant.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Computational Prediction of Nuclear Fission Products Behavior in a Molten Salt Reactor – DTU Chemistry

The relevance of nuclear power for the European and global energy challenge was recently affirmed in the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities, which applies from January 2023 [3]. Amongst the modern nuclear reactor designs proposed for the advent of clean, safe, and peaceful nuclear technology, the MSR technology holds the promise of generating cheaper-than-coal, stable and carbon-neutral energy in a modular and scalable fashion.

In the SolveMSR project – funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark – we will work towards creating a computational framework for predicting FP behavior in the fuel salt matrix of MSRs. We will benchmark the framework against experimental data. Our approach consists in coupling ab-initio quantum and classical molecular dynamics (MD) modelling techniques with x-ray spectroscopic structural analysis and experimental retention data, to resolve the solvation parameters of the fission products most hazardous for both public safety and power plant operations, in a molten fluoride solvent.

PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Compositional Simulation of Reactive Transport in CO2 Storage – DTU Chemistry

Centre for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) atDTU Chemistry is seeking talented PhD students to contribute to our exciting CO2 storage research in the project Compositional Simulation of Reactive Transport in CO2 Storage (CompReact).

In this project, we aim to advance CO2 storage simulation technology by combining state-of-the-art equilibrium calculation algorithms with compositional simulation. We intend to take advantage of the recent development in simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium calculation to improve the speed and reliability of CO2 storage simulation significantly. The candidates will work on integrating the novel chemical and phase equilibrium calculation algorithm into an in-house compositional simulator to simulate CO2 storage in both saline aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs. This requires robust and efficient calculation of multiphase equilibrium in dynamic simulation. The developed simulator will be applied to analyze both near-wellbore and reservoir-scale problems. It will also be an objective to integrate the relevant simulation methods in the advanced CO2 storage simulation software GEOSX (http://www.geosx.org/) through a collaboration with the current developers of GEOSX. We expect that the project will provide a new paradigm for performing compositional simulations for various underground CO2 storage processes. The project is a part of the INNO-CCUS partnership (https://www.inno-ccus.dk).

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in integrated blue optical phased array on thin-film lithium niobate platform for underwater optical communication – DTU Electro

The Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is defined as a worldwide network of smart interconnected underwater objects, poised to revolutionize a number of related technologies including ocean monitoring observatories, underwater exploration and resource exploitation, disaster prediction and prevention, aquaculture, and defense/security. The establishment of the IoUT requires sensing, localization, and data transmission functionalities, which are mostly achieved using underwater wireless sensor networks, consisting of small, intelligent, and battery-powered sensors. A crucial point is to enable transmission of the collected data over relatively large distances with high speed, low power consumption and low environmental impact. Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) represents a promising technology with the potential of addressing these requirements.

We are seeking a candidate for a PhD position to research integrated blue optical phased array (OPA) on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) platform, which can enable solid-state optical beam steering and will be used for the next-generation photonic chip-based UOWC system. TFLN platform is extremely promising for the UOWC application given its high transparency at blue-green light wavelength, high electro-optical coefficient, and low loss, allowing OPA-based underwater communications in a high speed.

You will participate in an international team in a European Innovation Commission (EIC) Pathfinder project called BlueArray. The project has partners from four different EU countries within the overall theme of photonic and electronic integrated circuits for next-generation UOWC technologies. This PhD project will take place at DTU Electro. As a participant of the project, you will become part of a team at DTU with expertise in design, simulation, nanofabrication, characterization, and application of photonic integrated circuits (PIC). The activities within the project will benefit from synergies with other projects in the group as well as with other activities in the department. The main supervisor will be Dr. Hao Hu, DTU Electro.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Magnetothermal energy harvesting from waste heat – DTU Energy

Do you want to contribute to a future where we can harvest energy from waste heat using a novel magnetothermal device, that you will get to help realize? If yes, this PhD-position is exactly for you.

At the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) we research how to harvest energy from a number of sources, and waste heat is particularly interesting because of the large amount of energy available from industrial processes. In fact, in the EU alone, the low grade waste heat amounts to more energy than 10 times the electricity consumption of Denmark. Harvesting part of this energy is therefore crucial for the green transition.
