PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Innovation Leadership

We are now looking to recruit a PhD student in innovation leadership. The field of research lies in the intersection between leadership studies and innovation management, with a specific focus on the construction industry in Sweden. This industry is ongoingly berated for its lacking performance. A succession of governmental reports and research have concluded that the industry suffers from excessive production costs, low efficiency, slow delivery, unsafe workplaces, and failure to innovate, among other things. While the various stakeholders recognize the urgent need to address these shortcomings, transformation and change have remained slow and disappointing. Leadership research has established a convincing correlation between leadership and successful change on group-, organizational-, and industry levels. Despite these promises, the relation and role of leadership as a potentially central ingredient for change in the construction industry remains largely unexplored.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Astronomy

This research project will focus on the planning and interpretation of astronomical observations, in particular upcoming observations of the thin, gaseous exospheres of water associated with the icy Galilean moons of Jupiter: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa. This water gas is very difficult to observe from ground because of Earth’s atmosphere, so the JUICE mission will carry a small sum-mm telescope (SWI) capable of observing water emission at high spectral resolution. In particular, we want to use SWI to constrain the composition of the exospheres and determine the distribution of water. The work will involve implementing sophisticated 3D structures in non-LTE radiative transfer models (e.g., LIME, RADMC-3D, Hyperion, ALI), to interpret spatially and spectrally resolved line profiles as well as emission in continuum. Using data acquired with ALMA and the recently launched JWST, there will also be opportunities to model the emission from young star forming regions. The work will be supervised by associate professors Eva Wirström and Per Bjerkeli.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Data Driven Antibiotic Resistance Research

Rapidly increasing antibiotic resistance necessitates innovative solutions to halt its spread. The work on preventing antibiotic resistance in the Bengtsson-Palme lab is focused on: 1) understanding and limiting spread of antibiotic resistance through the environment, 2) identifying genes involved in antibiotic resistance, 3) defining the conditions that select for antibiotic resistance in different settings, and 4) building a framework to allow implementation of monitoring for antibiotic resistance in the environment. This PhD project will be involved in all of these tasks, and the distribution between them can be somewhat influenced by your interest. The PhD project revolves around using large-scale data-driven approaches (including machine learning and metagenomic sequence analysis) to identify risk environments, define potential novel antibiotic resistance genes, and building a platform for AMR monitoring data.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in edge computing and decentralized learning

In most scenarios, data is inherently distributed and can be sensitive. Centralized over-the-cloud learning is not well adapted for this setting: uploading vast amounts of data to the cloud puts enormous pressure on existing communication networks, entails unacceptable long propagation delays, and poses privacy concerns. To address this issue, edge computing is envisioned as a new paradigm whereby computational power is moved from the cloud closer to where the data is generated, i.e., the wireless edge. Particularly, federated learning and swarm learning have emerged as the most promising approaches to decentralized learning at the network edge.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in the Computational Complexity of Statistical Inference

The PhD project will be focused on the computational complexity of statistical inference. Classical methods in statistics often focus on identifying limits on statistical estimation in terms of the amount of data or the signal-to-noise ratio required for estimation to be possible. However, in many cases where statistical estimation is known to be possible (e.g. detecting communities in a social network, the sparse version of principal component analysis etc.) all known algorithms for estimation require computationally inefficient brute force search. At the same time the best computationally efficient algorithms only work at much lower signal-to-noise ratios, or by consuming much larger amounts of data than the known inefficient algorithms. This phenomenon suggests that there are fundamental computational limits for statistical inference, and that there is a need to develop a mathematical theory, which goes beyond classical statistics, to explain these limits. In this project, we will contribute to the development of such a theory by utilizing mathematical tools from the theory of approximation algorithms and computational complexity theory. We will also explore connections between the complexity of statistical inference and classical questions in algorithms and complexity theory.

Chalmers University of Technology  is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
