Summary/title: Postdoctoral studies in virology and lipid metabolism (scholarship)
Our research has demonstrated that approximately 99% of glioblastomas (GBMs) are positive for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), a virus that enhances tumor aggressiveness. High viral activity in GBM strongly correlates with poor patient outcome. Importantly, our clinical studies show that antiviral therapy, when combined with standard treatment, can extend patient survival by 10–12 months. We have further shown that radiotherapy induces reactivation of HCMV in roughly 50% of patients, identifying a subgroup at particularly high risk for early tumor recurrence.
New data now suggest that a previously unrecognized, cancer-associated virus may explain the remarkably strong link between HCMV and glioblastoma, and potentially its association with other tumor types. Our emerging findings indicate that alterations in host cell metabolism are central to viral replication, persistence, and virus-driven oncogenic effects. Viral infection induces profound rewiring of lipid synthesis, remodeling of intracellular membranes, and changes in cell membrane lipid composition that appear essential for efficient viral replication and for maintaining a tumor-permissive state.
This project aims to characterize this cancer-associated virus, define its dependence on host lipid metabolic pathways, and identify therapeutic vulnerabilities. A central focus will be to understand how viral infection reshapes lipid metabolism to support replication and tumor aggressiveness, and how these pathways can be targeted using antiviral, antimetabolic, and lipid-directed therapeutic strategies.

The primary focus of this project is to characterize this HCMV-cancer-associated virus and understand:
- How it replicates and spreads between cells
- In which tumors and tissues it is active
- How it depends on the rewiring of host cell metabolism
- How it contributes to oncogenic transformation

Summary/title: Postdoctoral studies in bioinformatics and computational virus discovery (scholarship)
Our research has demonstrated that approximately 99% of glioblastomas are positive for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), and that high viral activity strongly correlates with poor patient outcome. Importantly, clinical studies show that antiviral therapy combined with standard treatment provides a significant survival benefit, and that radiotherapy induces viral reactivation in a substantial fraction of patients, placing them at high risk for early tumor recurrence.
New data now indicate the presence of a previously unrecognized, HCMV-cancer-associated virus that may explain the strong association between HCMV and glioblastoma, and potentially its link to other tumor types. The central goal of this project is to identify, sequence, and characterize this virus.
We will generate sequencing data using Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing and Illumina short-read sequencing, and apply advanced bioinformatic analyses to assemble contigs, reconstruct the viral genome, and define its genetic organization. Identified viral sequences will be systematically searched against established public databases to assess novelty, relatedness, and evolutionary origin.
The postdoctoral bioinformatician will play a central role in viral detection, genome assembly, and sequence annotation, as well as in the integration of sequencing, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolic datasets. These analyses will be essential to uncover novel virus–host interactions and to understand how this virus contributes to tumor biology and therapeutic vulnerability.

Summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in In-Cell Structural Biology of Lipid Flux
The Nanoscale Lipid Flux Architecture research group, located in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) at Karolinska Institutet, led by Assistant Professor Veijo Salo, aims to uncover the molecular logic of lipid flux and organelle biogenesis in metabolic health and disease. We study how cells build, remodel and regulate membrane bound compartments, and how nanoscale structures coordinate the flow of lipids in their native context. Our work integrates cell biology, advanced imaging and in situ cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) to reveal membrane architectures and protein assemblies inside intact cells.
In this postdoctoral project you will focus on developing and applying in-cell cryo-ET methodologies to visualise nanoscale lipid handling processes directly inside hepatocytes. This includes building cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy (cryo-CLEM) workflows to identify and target relevant cellular states, and performing cryo-ET to uncover membrane architectures and protein assemblies that determine whether lipids are stored in lipid droplets or secreted through the pathway. The project provides a unique opportunity to create new experimental strategies and to generate mechanistic insight into a central problem in cell biology and metabolic disease.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
