Postdoc summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in assesment of global forest dynamics
The world’s forests are changing rapidly around us. Rates of tree mortality are increasing in many regions, growth rates of trees are changing and the enormous sink of carbon that they provide may be under threat. Yet we currently lack consistent and reliable global-scale assessments of how the dynamics of tree growth and death are changing. In the Tree2Globe project, funded by the European Research Council, we are seeking to change this, developing new methodology to combine observational datasets, particularly from ground-based inventory plots, with dynamic global vegetation modelling.
The fellow will join this Tree2Globe team, working under the supervision of Thomas Pugh and alongside a wider group of researchers working on forest dynamics and ecosystem modelling at Lund University. They will develop new methodology utilizing the LPJ-GUESS dynamic vegetation model and applying it for assessment of dynamics and carbon cycling in forests around the world. They can expect opportunities to substantially build their professional network, interfacing with a large team of collaborators worldwide. The fellow will also become part of the BECC research platform, a collaboration between Lund University and the University of Gothenburg, which brings together over 250 researchers working on the topics related to biodiversity and ecosystem services under a changing climate.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral positions in innovation studies
The post-docs shall contribute to the research environment at CIRCLE. The overall aim of research at CIRCLE is to understand and explain how innovation can contribute to a good society and tackle societal challenges such as economic crises, climate change or the reorganization of the knowledge economy in a globalized world. This requires advanced insights into
- how knowledge is created and diffused in organizations, networks, regions, countries, and globally,
- how knowledge is turned into innovations,
- which societal conditions promote or hinder the creation and diffusion of innovation, and
- what are the intended and unintended societal consequences of innovation.
Research at CIRCLE has been fundamental to theorize and empirically study the knowledge economy, and in particular the processes, drivers and hinders, as well as governance of innovation. Recently, however, attention has turned to societal consequences of innovation and potential dark sides of innovation.
Pressures on the knowledge economy have increased related to geopolitical conflicts, social and political tensions due to inequality, shocks like Covid-19 and the energy crunch, paired with the need to decarbonize the economy. This set of pressures is related to a revival of industrial policy with heavy consequences for the knowledge economy.
The post-docs shall contribute to developing research actions to investigate, on the one hand, the consequences of such macro-changes on the knowledge economy and innovation and, on the other hand, the potential and limitations of innovation, and the governance thereof to address challenges related to the changes in the economic landscape.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in atmospheric science with a focus on greenhouse gases
Over the coming decades changes in ecosystems due to climate change, land-use driven changes, as well as continued direct anthropogenic emissions will all play a role in the extent of global temperature rise. In 2023 the greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring community was set a challenge through the approval by the World Meteorological Organisation’s Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (GGGW) to understand GHG fluxes at unprecedented resolution. This endeavour will require continued improvement of measurements, data processing and interpretation activities – making the most of existing infrastructure and data sources, while also trying to expand to geographical areas with currently limited coverage. We seek to support this area of work through employment of a postdoctoral scientist to bring the diverse measurement sets across different platforms in Sweden to enable the most efficient use of data across our combined monitoring infrastructure.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc Collective Effects
The accelerators at the MAX IV facility are the core components for production of synchrotron radiation. There are two storage rings and one linear accelerator. The largest of these accelerators is the 3 GeV electron storage ring, which is the first in the world to employ a multi-bend-achromat magnet lattice to deliver ultrahigh-brightness synchrotron radiation. It is the first of the new generation of storage rings with extremely low emittance, of which only three are currently in operation, while several synchrotron radiation facilities worldwide are upgrading in this direction. We intend to stay at the forefront and are therefore already studying improved accelerator designs and components.
In particular, since January 2024 MAX IV is engaged in the design of a major upgrade to its 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4U. The upgrade aims at an outstanding improvement in light source performance to maintain MAXIV’s competitive edge beyond the end of this decade. The project requires extensive theoretical studies and simulations of the collective effects to help demonstrate that the final design can reach the desired beam current, energy spread and emittance.
