PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Computer Science with specialisation in Computer Graphics.
This project aims to develop new algorithms that create realistic 3D graphics for Augmented and Virtual Reality or Cross Reality (XR). While modern graphics hardware is capable of generating impressive images at real-time, it is still challenging to meet the billions of pixels needed for XR within the portable, low-power requirements of modern XR. We will focus on real-time rendering using GPUs with realistic, physically-based rendering, such as ray and path tracing, to synthesize images. This project will investigate the use of upscaling to meet the high spatial and temporal requirements of the human visual system, by incorporating Deep Learning techniques.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics with focus on theoretical attosecond physics.
The PhD students shall work on the development of methods for studies of non-linear interaction and photoionization of atoms by electromagnetic fields. The studies will include laser-driven electron dynamics within atoms into time-dependent excited states, as well as studies of how excited atoms interact on the mesoscopic and macroscopic length scale. Both semi-classical and quantum mechanical description of light will be considered. According to published studies, these excited atoms can be used as a new kind of ”clock” to perform time-frequency analysis of attosecond pulses, but exactly how accurate these measurements can be is still an open question. Atoms are composed of many electrons and their dynamics must, therefore, be approximated in some way. We use the Time-Dependent Configuration-Interaction Singles (TDCIS) method, and diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory, as our starting points. Numerical implementations of new programs and sub-routines will be written in modern FORTRAN. Collaboration on codes within the research group is carried out using GIT.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Mathematical Statistics.
The aim of this thesis project is to develop spatial statistical models and inference methods that can be applied to a wide array of environmental data and improve the performance of a wave power plant; possible applications include prediction of waves, reconstruction of past vegetation, estimates of CO2 emissions and analysis of climate model output. Additionally wave predictions will be used in conjunction with stochastic control algorithms to improve the control, and thus performance, of a wave power plant.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics with a focus on modelling volcanic climate forcing.
The PhD position is part of a research project financed by the Swedish Research Council Formas. The overall aim is to improve our knowledge on the climate impact of volcanic eruptions reaching the stratosphere (above ~10 km). Stratospheric aerosol particles scatter and absorb solar radiation and thereby cool the Earth. Projection of the future climate is complicated by natural climate variability. Variations in the stratospheric aerosol load is one of these. Explosive volcanic eruptions can inject millions of tons of particle forming sulphur dioxide (SO2) into the stratosphere elevating the stratospheric aerosol load. Stratospheric particles have life times on the order of months or years inducing long lasting climate cooling. The resulting climate impact highly depends on the injection altitude. Most SO2 instruments have very limited, if any, vertical resolution adding uncertainty in the current model simulations.
This project focuses on combining satellite data and global climate modelling to estimate the climate cooling from volcanic eruptions. We have developed a method to produce high vertical resolution SO2 data.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
The goal of the project is combining techniques to produce novel types of nanoparticle-based materials, including catalytic materials, based on aerosol-generated nanoparticles and to use advanced characterization methods to link the structure of the material to the properties of the material. The main focus of the project will be to development and increased understanding of the formation mechanism behind mixed-metal nanoparticles and how to tune their composition, but the project will also include advanced characterization of the individual nanoparticles as well as the larger nanoparticle-based structures. This will be done by electron microscopy, x-ray-based characterization techniques and measurements of the catalytic properties. Hence, the doctoral student will gain comprehensive experience in several important key production and characterization tools for nanomaterials, in addition to forward the knowledge on new types of nanoparticle-based materials and nanoparticle formation via aerosol routes. We have a large network of

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Solid Mechanics with focus on modeling of tin whiskers.
The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies, which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties will also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).
The employment is part of a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council that aims to identify mechanisms that control the growth of tin whiskers that can spontaneously begin to grow out of the tin surface. This project aims to establish modeling techniques to simulate the growth of whiskers. Constitutive equations will be established for the phenomenon and a numerical solution methodology based on the finite element method will be further developed. The proposed project will provide a description of the growth of whiskers. Identification of essential parameters that control this phenomenon will be a natural part of the project. The project will mainly focus on numerical modeling and simulation based on finite elements, such as phase field modeling. For this, the doctoral student will need to implement their own numerical calculation tools. Experimental studies will also be included in the work.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden –Official Website
Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.
Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
