Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Research Fellow in Cognitive Ageing and Brain Imaging

The School of Psychology at the University of Leeds are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team studying the neurobiological mechanisms of strategy use to improve memory in ageing. The 1-year position will contribute to a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). You will work with Dr Melanie Burke and Dr Richard Allen (University of Leeds), along with Prof Louise Brown Nicholls (PI, University of Strathclyde), Dr Claudia von Bastian (University of Sheffield) and Prof Mario Parra Rodrigues (University of Strathclyde) on the project ‘Strategy Training to support healthy cognitive ageing: behavioural, neuroimaging and real-world investigations’.  

To be considered for the role, you will have completed, or almost completed (i.e., submitted, pending examination), a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, psychology or a closely related discipline. You will have some experience or knowledge of brain imaging methods, with an interest in memory and cognitive ageing. You will have experience with quantitative and imaging research methods and of relevant software for analysis. Experience with relevant experimental software (e.g., PsychoPy), handling complex data, and collecting cognitive data with older adults, would be an advantage. You will have the ability to conduct research work in a professional and sensitive manner. You will be able to plan, organise, and prioritise your own workload, including leading preparation of research proposals and papers, and meeting deadlines. You will also be able to work within a team, including liaising with external collaborators and other stakeholders. Finally, you will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to present complex information in an accessible way to different audiences.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in African Forest Measurement

Do you want to expand our understanding of the forests of the Congo Basin? Do you have skills in engaging partners in tropical research and developing high-quality ecological datasets? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

The Ecology and Global Change research cluster at Leeds conducts world-leading research in tropical ecology and change. We are looking to recruit a skilled Postdoctoral Research Fellow to undertake plot data collection and compilation from the African Topical Rainforest Observatory Network (AfriTRON) for the CongoFor1.5 project. The central aim of CongoFor1.5 is to understand the carbon balance and ecology of the forests of the Congo Basin over time. We are looking for a researcher who is motivated to conduct fieldwork across the Congo Basin to help us assess the changing carbon balance of intact forests. 

The CongoFor1.5 project is designed to census at least 225 long-term forest monitoring plots across Cameroon (45 plots), Democratic Republic of Congo (90 plots), Gabon (45 plots), and Republic of the Congo (45 plots), in close collaboration with our long-term partners in each of the four countries. You will join a vibrant team, led by Professor Simon Lewis, and a Research Fellow in Central African Carbon Dynamics, and will benefit from the support of the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI) who fund the project. 

You will be responsible for conducting field data collection with our partners in central Africa to assist training partners’ field teams and to ensure that high-quality data are acquired, quality controlled, and archived in the database ForestPlots.net. This will include substantial fieldwork in tropical forests across the Congo basin. You will work closely with the CongoFor1.5 Research Fellow in Central African Carbon Dynamics who will oversee the plot data collection and the Research Data Officer to quality control and archive the data. The successful candidate will have personal research time to be used based on the project and their interests, to best further their future career.

You will be based in the UK, but will work with colleagues in Central Africa, and take part in lengthy and remote field campaigns. You will have excellent existing field skills and a willingness to collaborate widely with colleagues in Africa. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to CongoFor1.5 in other ways, including helping early career researchers in central Africa with analyses.

This role will be based on the university campus   with scope for it to be undertaken in a hybrid manner.  We are also open to discussing flexible working arrangements.

We are seeking a post-doctoral Research Fellow to join our project ‘Spectraspace: Spectral-Spatial Attention Models for Molecular Spectroscopy and Digital Histopathology’ funded by the EPSRC.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in High-Performance Computing

An EPSRC-funded project ‘Informing Future Numerical Standards by Determining Features of Non-Standard Mathematical Hardware’ is a 3-year project that aims to develop tools to improve our understanding of several numerical features of the numerical hardware present in datacentre GPUs and domain-specific machine learning accelerators. The main goal is to improve the existent almost entirely manual methods by focusing on three core aspects: automating, removing the need for specialized in-depth knowledge of mathematics of floating-point arithmetic, and informing the public about the features of the current hardware.

The work is spread across four work packages (WPs). Each WP contains a wide variety of tasks that will provide you with a unique experience of working with the low-level numerical software and mathematical hardware, as well as understand mathematics that underpin that software and hardware. As examples, it will involve creating models of mathematical hardware available in literature by utilizing custom-precision simulators, as well as designing high-level software wrappers that can manage low-level code targeted at an array of diverse hardware devices: from NVIDIA and AMD datacentre GPUs to Intel Ponte Vecchio accelerators.

The project is led by Dr Mantas Mikaitis and you will work closely with him in designing algorithms and software, preparing publications for high-visibility journals and conferences, organising minisymposiums with invited speakers, writing technical blog posts, presenting research at national and international conferences as well as internally at the School of Computing, working with international project partners and industrial partners, maintaining academic collaborations through regular meetings and exchange of knowledge, and working with undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students where required.

You will be in the Computational Science & Engineering research theme of the School of Computing and become a member of the Scientific Computing research group of academics, PDRAs and post-graduate researchers working on a wide array of topics, including partial-differential equations for fluid dynamics, numerical linear algebra, scientific machine learning, computer arithmetic, numerical analysis, algorithm design, software and hardware benchmarking and performance optimization, and hardware design and analysis. You will become a member of a new informal group Leeds Mathematical Hardware and Software Lab.

We are recruiting a Research Fellow to work on the ‘My First 1000 Days’ project, a project aimed at improving the long-term development and life chances of children born into some of Britain’s most disadvantaged communities. Funded by a substantial donation from an individual donor, the project will harness expertise from research groups across the University and work with a range of regional and international partners. This project has differing workstreams that represent a holistic approach to the crucial first 1000 days of a child’s life. The project will determine the feasibility of implementing group care with new parents/caregivers and their 0–2-year-olds in Leeds. It is anticipated that the project outcomes will influence and inform national policy, especially around how supporting early parenting can impact language and cognitive development, healthy behaviours, and support the flourishing of disabled children.

You will be responsible for the My First 1000 Days research activities which will include setting up and implementing a feasibility study and undertaking qualitative and quantitative evaluations. You will report to Professor Jason Halford.

(13) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Climate Impact of Future Aircraft Technology

You will join a team of climate and atmospheric scientists at the University of Leeds to work on two complementary projects funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Department for Transport (DfT) research programme “Jet zero: Aviation’s non-CO2 impacts on the climate”. You will work with Dr Alex Rap, Prof Amanda Maycock and Prof Piers Forster, employing the SOCRATES radiative transfer scheme and line-by-line models to quantify the contrail radiative forcing from climate-optimised aircraft designs and alternative fuels. You will also collaborate closely with the other researchers involved in the projects at the University of Southampton, Imperial College London, and University College London, as well as with our project partners Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The ‘Contrail Assessment of Future Aircraft and Propulsion Architectures’ project is a collaboration between research groups at the University of Southampton and the University of Leeds. The overarching aim of the project is to assess the contrail climate impact of future low-CO2 aircraft by incorporating rigorous analysis of turbulence/microphysics interactions into climate-optimised aircraft design. The ‘Contrails from SAF and H2 combustion; from lab experiments to global mitigation policy’ is a partnership between Imperial College London, University College London and the University of Leeds. The aim of the project is to assess the impact of alternative aircraft fuels (sustainable aviation fuels, SAF, and hydrogen) on contrail formation and radiative forcing and model the feedback arising from the different aviation climate impacts on future aviation policy.  

You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in the field of Atmospheric Science (or a closely related field). You will have knowledge of atmospheric and/or climate modelling and evidence of a strong commitment to publishing scientific results at an international level. Experience of radiative transfer modelling and quantifying aviation climate impacts are desirable.

The Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development has been awarded funding from Bradford Integrated Care Board to evaluate the implementation of a faith- sensitive therapy for depression in Muslim communities. This 18-month study will involve drawing on research evidence to support the implementation process and developing guidance for primary care and voluntary sector mental health services wishing to implement the culturally adapted approach. This will add to current knowledge on implementation of culturally-sensitive interventions, for which evidence is currently limited.  

You will contribute to all aspects of the project delivery as required. The main roles will include research activities to inform a sustainable training model, the adoption of effective implementation strategies and development of an implementation toolkit. You will synthesise existing research evidence on implementing interventions to address health inequities and collect and analyse qualitative data from mental health professionals and people from Muslim backgrounds with lived experience of depression. You will also support a Quality Improvement Collaborative made up of all relevant stakeholders and an Advisory Group of people with lived experience, for which you will need excellent communication skills.

The posts are funded as part of a prestigious NIHR ARC YH & Alzheimer’s Society award and will be based at the Academic Unit for Ageing & Stroke Research, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, located at the Bradford Institute for Health Research. The successful applicant(s) will join a regional network of dementia researchers, in partnership with the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, University of Bradford, and national NIHR ARC Dementia Postdoctoral Researcher Network. 

NIHR ARC YH have prioritised research into prevention of dementia as a major evidence gap, with a focus on the 12 potentially modifiable risk factors outlined in the 2020 Lancet Commission report on dementia prevention, intervention and care. Our NIHR ARC YH Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Training Programme will involve novel research to investigate.

We anticipate appointing postdoctoral researchers with a mix of methodological expertise. This includes researchers with qualitative research expertise, including intervention co-design, and researchers with expertise in epidemiology/biostatistics, including the use of routine health and care data for research. Although experience in dementia research is desirable, we recognise that many research skills are transferable, so encourage researchers who have experience in other related areas of health and care research to apply. 

The NIHR YH ARC Dementia Capacity Building Network is co-led by Andrew Clegg, Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the Academic Unit for Ageing & Stroke Research, University of Leeds and Siobhan Reilly, Professor of Applied Dementia Research at the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, University of Bradford. The posts will be supported through the transition to independent researchers by the co-leads and their wider research teams, with the goal of building long-term research capacity in this strategically important area.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Spatial Inequality

We seek a Research Fellow in Spatial Inequalities with experience in developing reproducible methods using open data to support the delivery of an exciting new project focused on enhancing park safety for women and girls. This project, led by Dr Fran Pontin at the University of Leeds in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) and Bradford Metropolitan District Council (BMDC), aims to integrate safety research into local decision-making processes by providing a quantitative assessment of park safety metrics. 

This project will build on the Safer Parks work between the University of Leeds and the West Yorkshire Mayor. Utilising open-source spatial data to identify areas in parks that promote safety for women and girls as well as highlight areas needing improvement.

Working with the project lead Dr Fran Pontin and co-investigator Dr Vikki Houlden in the School of Geography and co-investigator Dr Anna Barker in the School of Law, you will conduct novel research to develop and implement safety-promoting metrics for parks, culminating in the creation of an interactive dashboard map for evidence-based decision-making. Key tasks will include conducting literature reviews, scoping and evaluating open data, developing composite safety measures from park features, creating data visualizations, and engaging with stakeholders to ensure the project’s success.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Fellow in Architecture

We seek a Research Fellow with experience undertaking evidence-based research and evaluating policy and urban design practices. Good experience working with city councils and knowledge of local and national play space practices, policies, and guidelines will be preferable. 

The candidate will conduct a thorough literature review and policy analysis, applying qualitative research methods for developing an evidence-based policy brief, ‘Building Inclusive Play Spaces in Leeds’. They will also provide administrative support for workshop organisation, editorial assistance with the policy document and conduct discussions/debates, interviews, and focus groups. This role offers the opportunity to conduct research and manage processes towards the delivery of the research project. You will work with the principal investigator and team to execute the research aspects of the work programme and support ongoing activities. 

The candidate will work closely with the Leeds City Council team to evaluate the processes employed and produce a report with case studies and recommendations, including what these approaches might mean for policy and practice. In addition, you will advise and guide the project lead on sufficient approaches in collaboration with partners to help shape future public engagement programmes.
