The Department of Sociology is seeking candidates for a PhD position with a focus on public opinion dynamics online. The work of the candidate will be in the area of public opinion dynamics, broadly defined. This includes the study of phenomena such as intentional disinformation, unintentional or inadvertent misinformation, malinformation (designed to harm others), and also related phenomena such as conspiracy theories, propaganda, hate speech, and so on. A particular focus for the research is how these forms may occur under societal threats. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Experimental PhysicsThe project is focused on preparation graphene related materials optimized for application in supercapacitors. The project aims to prepare materials with high surface area using chemical modification of graphene and graphene oxide, introducing different defects and addition of nanoparticles. Important part of project is aimed on design of environmentally friendly water based dispersions based on graphene related materials for preparation of electrodes with high surface area. Dispersions and inks will be optimized for best performance in supercapacitors and for several electrode manufacturing methods including spray deposition and printing. The candidate will be engaged in synthesis of new materials and characterization of these materials using BET/DFT surface area analysis, DSC, x-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy etc. It is also planned to use synchrotron radiation facilities and neutron scattering methods.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student: chemistry with a focus on environmental chemistry
Per- and polyfluorinated substances, commonly referred to as PFAS, is a group of highly stable compounds which can be widely distributed in the environment. PFAS are present in a wide range of products and when these products reach their end-of-life, the PFAS substances will end up in our household waste, and subsequently in the waste incineration process. However, the fate of PFAS in the incineration process is unknown, and will therefore be explored in this project. You will study the fate and degradation of PFAS in the waste incineration process, and what potential byproducts are formed. The main objective is to assess to what extent the incineration process may serve as a source of dispersal, reduction and destruction of PFAS, while elucidating the fate of these compounds. This will mainly be performed by combustion trials at different operation conditions and thorough characterization of resulting residuals. The research tasks will be conducted in close collaboration with our industry partner Umeå Energi, and will include combustion experiments in lab set-ups, using a simulated waste fuel. Parts of the practical work may be carried out on-site at the Umeå Energi combined heat and power plant.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in ecology with focus on interactions between terrestrial plants and water chemistry in boreal streams
Aquatic ecosystems are fueled by terrestrial organic matter in the form of riparian plant litter and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) inputs. In the boreal region, intensive forest management with focus on coniferous monocultures is altering riparian plant species composition and productivity. In addition, the boreal region is already experiencing higher temperatures and altered patterns in precipitation and terrestrial runoff due to climate change. This inevitably leads to changes in quantity and quality of terrestrial organic matter input to streams. As these changes are projected to continue, there is a need to understand how they will interact to influence the role of terrestrial organic matter in aquatic systems and, thus, the ecosystem functions that these systems provide. The aim of this project is therefore to study and quantify how the riparian plant community composition influences carbon uptake by microbes in streams and how this, in turn, may be influenced by the quantity and quality of DOC. This project will thereby advance our understanding of how land use and climate change impact the ecological functioning of boreal streams.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in chemistry in Industrial Chemistry
The current research project focuses on underutilized forest-industrial residual streams, bark and lignin, which today are largely used as fuel but which in the future may increasingly be used for the production of liquid biofuels, other types of bio-based chemicals, and materials with new properties. The project will include extraction and chemical characterization of substances from bark, chemical and biochemical (enzymatic) modification of extractives and lignin, as well as studies of new areas of application for such substances. For example, the studies will provide knowledge about bio-based raw materials, extraction processes, advanced chemical analysis, enzyme technology, as well as forest-industrial processes and biorefinery development.

PhD position summary/title: WASP AI Program: PhD position in Computational Science and Engineering
The primary objective of this project is to address key challenges in functional data analysis, with a specific focus on statistical testing in the presence of misalignment. We aim to devise innovative methodologies rooted in optimization theory and machine learning algorithms. The focus is on creating autonomous, robust methods capable of performing intricate statistical analysis in the face of domain distortion. Importantly, these methods will prioritize computational efficiency, facilitating their use in large scale real-time data processing scenarios. In practical terms, our project is poised to deliver significant impact across a range of domains. In medical imaging, we aim to enhance both the accuracy and efficiency of disease detection algorithms by improving how they handle misalignment. In the biomechanical sphere, we hope to enable more precise tracking of movement, with potential benefit to areas such as sports performance and rehabilitation. Finally, for signal processing, the project has the potential to advance pattern identification in time-series data, notably in sensor data analysis and anomaly detection.

Transposable elements (TEs), major component of most plant genomes, are active and dynamic component of genome structural and functional variation and evolution. However, accurate and efficient tools for TEs annotation, classification, movement, lateral transfer, recombination, and evolution are still lacking or not efficacious enough especially for complex genomes, like that of conifers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science or Computational Science and Engineering with focus on Machine Learning for Software Security
Our societies rely on computer systems, and increasingly so. Unfortunately, computer systems can be the target of malicious applications—malware. These malicious applications can be complicated pieces of software developed by well organized criminal gangs or by government agencies to attack anything from private computers and smart phones to critical national infrastructures. There has been an increased interest in adapting and developing the latest machine learning methods for the purpose of malware detection, and preliminary results are encouraging. The specific goals of this project include to develop novel machine learning methods to improve malware detection. The doctoral student position is offered within a research project financed by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP). The doctoral student will be co-supervised by Alexandre Bartel, Professor and head of the Software Engineering and Security (SES) group, and Tommy Löfstedt, Docent and Associate Professor and head of the Machine Learning group at the Department of Computing Science, Umeå University.

The PhD project comprises the study and development of a novel technology in organic electronics: a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). Through basic studies of dynamic doping and light emission in thin semiconducting films, in combination with applied material and device development, the goal is a flexible, efficient and uniquely sustainable emissive LEC device, which enables new and important applications. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Ph.D. student in computational science to join our research team. In recent years, the life sciences have experienced an explosion of data from a variety of sources, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and imaging technologies. While statistical and machine-learning approaches have been widely used to extract valuable insights from this data, they can only provide correlations between critical variables, not cause-and-effect relationships. To make reliable predictions, we need such relationships. As a result, there is an increasing need for mechanistic models that can integrate diverse data sets and provide a deeper understanding of biological processes. This Ph.D. position is focused on developing and applying such models to advance our understanding of complex biological systems. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Medical Science with an orientation towards Physiology
This project concerns genetic epidemiology of aging. The work will involve statistical analyses of human data, including genetics (genome-wide association data), cognitive tests, diagnostics, biomarkers, and brain imaging data. Neuroinflammation is an important player in cognitive aging and dementia and partly links to chronic systemic inflammation. Risk genes for Alzheimer’s disease are overrepresented among genes with impact on immune system functions. The aim of the project is to investigate how genetics, sex, and peripheral inflammation interplay to influence the development of age-related neurocognitive impairments and dementia. The successful applicant will process and perform statistical analyses of (mainly pre-existing) data from two deeply phenotyped longitudinal prospective cohort studies on aging and dementia; the Betula project at Umeå University, and the SATSA cohort from the Swedish Twin Registry at the Karolinska Institute

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in environmental science with focus on sediment carbon burial and loss in northern lakes
The aim of this project is to develop a more realistic model of the role of northern lakes as carbon sinks/sources under a changing climate. The research will combine a high-resolution study of organic matter transport and burial in one lake with a multi-lake analysis based on repeat coring to assess sediment carbon burial efficiency. Important factors to be studied include quantifying changes in the sources and composition of organic matter and disentangling the influence on carbon burial of diagenetic processes, catchment land-use changes, and seasonal to millennial responses to environmental and climate changes. The research will combine established methods in (paleo)limnology such as major and trace element geochemistry with state-of-the-art methods such as infrared spectroscopy (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, visible–near-infrared spectroscopy) and pyrolysis-GC/MS. The project will further advance our knowledge on the ability of lake sediments to sequester carbon in response to climate and environmental changes.
