Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in earth observation
Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top universities. The University has around 47 000 students and more than 8 800 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.
Wildfire frequency and severity is expected to increase in the future due to anthropogenic climate change. With the combined effects of climate change, an increasing human population and the associated land use changes, it is fundamental to understand the patterns, drivers and effects of vegetation fires in order to prevent fires and reduce harm to ecosystems and societies. Collecting data on fire, biodiversity and socio-economic variables is therefore imperative to better understand the feedbacks, tipping points and regime shifts related to the Anthropocene.
Land abandonment describes the discontinuing of agricultural activities, which often leads to subsequent recovery of natural vegetation and sometimes increased fire risk. The causes behind land abandonment are complex and include biophysical as well as political and socio-economic drivers, such as unsuitable climate conditions, drought, small field sizes, government policies, and migration. Understanding these drivers along with land abandonment effects on ecosystems and societies is important for sustainable land use.
This project aims to 1) classify and study patterns and trends in vegetation fires, 2) map landscape fires and burn scars at a detailed level and 3) study overall patterns in land abandonment and recultivation, to allow for both general and detailed studies of the spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation fires and land abandonment, their drivers and their impacts on the surrounding environment. The project is partly funded through to the Strategic Research Area Biodiversity and Ecosystems in a Changing Climate (BECC) at Lund University.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral in Deep learning based design of protein-semiconductor metamaterials
Recent breakthroughs in deep learning–powered protein design, recognized by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, have enabled the creation of proteins with near-atomic accuracy. Models such as RFdiffusion, LigandMPNN, and hallucination-based frameworks can now generate symmetric oligomers, cages, and backbones while optimizing sequence properties. An emerging frontier focuses on designing proteins that act as templates for inorganic interfaces, forming symmetric oligomers that control inorganic material polymorph, facet composition, and geometry. This project aims to establish the first design framework for programmable, functional protein–semiconductor metamaterials, contributing to a broader vision of sustainable biofabrication of (opto-)electronic nanotechnology.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in Gender Studies
The purpose of the central research project is to investigate how struggles over gender and sexuality shape contemporary political and social landscapes in Europe. The project examines both feminist and LGBTQI+ movements advocating for expanded rights, as well as hybrid alliances between anti-gender networks, religious fundamentalists, conservatives, and far-right movements opposing these advancements. The research project aims to contribute new knowledge about the emerging normative foundations of society in the wake of today’s divergent mobilizations. The project is led by Professor Mia Liinason.
We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research within the project, both individually and in collaboration with the research group. The position requires prior experience with ethnographic fieldwork or digital network analysis, as well as advanced knowledge of language and sociopolitical contexts in Southern Europe. Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral positions in Energy Sciences with a focus on thermal runaway modeling (COMPEL)
This project is focused on the development of high-fidelity reacting flow models to investigate thermal runaway in battery cells, pack, modules, and systems. Generally speaking, thermal runaway is a chain reaction that leads to the uncontrolled release of battery cell energy, which in turn can lead to fires that are difficult to extinguish. The project will be undertaken in collaboration with Scania Industrial Battery Systems as well as the COMPEL partners. The aim of the postdoctoral project is to develop next generation simulation methodology to predict thermal runaway on the cell level. The combustion and gas model developed on the cell level will then feed into the work to accurately predict thermal runaway on pack, module, and system levels.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in Energy Sciences with focus on district heating sector coupling and energy markets
This position focuses on district heating systems, energy markets, and sector coupling. You will be involved in several research projects, including the EU project DHC Academy and the Hycogen 2 project.
DHC Academy aims to develop an educational platform for district heating, targeting both practitioners and academics. The project is carried out in collaboration with several European universities and industry stakeholders. The Department of Energy Sciences, together with the postdoc, is responsible for coordinating the development of course materials to be made available via a shared digital platform.
Hycogen 2 investigates how surplus heat from hydrogen production can be utilized efficiently. During electrolysis, approximately 30% of the energy is converted into heat. With the EU’s target of 10 million tons of hydrogen per year by 2030, this corresponds to around 230 TWh of residual heat—four times Sweden’s annual district heating demand. The project analyzes and develops solutions for integrating hydrogen production with district heating and cooling systems, aiming to increase energy efficiency and strengthen the resilience of the energy system.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in Protein Design
The postdoctoral fellow will join a project focused on developing protein-based electronic components, with the ultimate goal of enabling in-cell production of semiconductor components. This specific postdoctoral project aims to develop methods for designing 2D protein lattices that serve as scaffolds for attaching other protein assemblies with precise geometry, thereby creating molecular structures capable of transferring electrons and interacting with light. Such assemblies also have applications in biomedicine. The primary objective is to develop computational methods, using deep learning–based protein design, for the successful design of 2D lattices. These methods will then be applied to generate designs targeted for experimental evaluation.
