(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral position in experimental-philosophical project on paternalism and discrimination at Aarhus University

Acts and policies that interfere with people, without their consent, and are meant to promote their interests or wellbeing are paternalistic. Examples of policies that have been described as paternalistic include smoking policies or the policy of earmarked paternity leave. While paternalism has the potential to significantly benefit people, it is also criticized, e.g., for disrespecting people’s autonomy. An important but under-examined aspect of paternalistic policies is that they often target disadvantaged groups or affect groups differently. While such efforts potentially promote equality, including labour market and health equality, policies that target or affect groups differently raise concerns about discrimination. The project illuminates the challenges of combatting inequalities between different groups in society while catering to the morally significant concerns of avoiding wrongful paternalism and discrimination. Specifically, while paternalistic discrimination seems to cater to a concern of (i) protecting people equally, it may fail to accommodate a second moral concern of (ii) respecting people equally. Based on this dilemma, the project’s research question asks how the wrong of paternalistic discrimination may potentially be alleviated.

The project consists of two work packages. WP1 approaches the research question through the lens of analytical political philosophy. It will suggest and examine factors that intensify or temper the wrongness of paternalistic discrimination. Examples of potential factors include i) the direct/indirect nature of the discrimination in question, ii) the nature of the harm prevented, or iii) the well-being level of the intended beneficiary.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 3 postdoc positions in Arctic coastal biogeochemical cycling, fish communities and glacier dynamic

The impact of freshening from melting land and sea ice is expected to transform the entire structure and functioning of Arctic coastal marine ecosystems. CIFAR is a research center that aims to unravel how the complex interplay between ice melt, runoff and ice formation across geographical scales and time affect coastal properties and ecosystem functioning. Here we call for three Post Doc positions to be filled in 2026.

Post doc 1:
Freshwater runoff from land affects coastal water quality and functioning, particularly in plumes near river outlets. This post doc project will rely on existing data as well as new field data of nutrients, carbon, and stable isotopes from riverine-coast systems in East Greenland, to investigate how catchment characteristics affect the transport and biogeochemical transformation of carbon and nutrients from land to sea. Experience with using C-N isotopic tracers and fluorescence Excitation Emission Matricies (EEM) are advantageous but not a requirement. Experience with fieldwork in remote areas is valued.
The position is available from April 2026 or as soon as possible hereafter. For more information contact Professor Tenna Riis (tenna.riis@bio.au.dk) or Assist. Prof. Johnna M. Holding (johnna@ecos.au.dk).

Post doc 2:
Glaciers are melting at an accelerating rate. In addition to releasing icebergs, they deliver large amounts of meltwater to fjords through rivers and subglacial discharge. The goal of this postdoc is to scale up observations of glacial plumes, surface temperatures, and calving events by combining ground-truth measurements with remote-sensing data. A new Earth-observing CubeSat mission, DISCO2, will launch in 2025 into a sun-synchronous polar orbit, passing near the poles about 15 times per day and regularly observing the CIFAR study region. Its payload – two optical cameras, a thermal camera, and onboard machine-learning capabilities – will allow high-resolution monitoring of glacier dynamics and surface temperatures, supporting broader regional upscaling.
The position is available from June 2026 or as soon as possible hereafter. For more information contact Professor Søren Rysgaard (rysgaard@au.dk) or Professor Tenna Riis (tenna.riis@bio.au.dk).

Post doc 3:
The geographic range of aquatic ectotherms is constrained by physiological performance. To investigate the ecophysiological consequences of an ice-free Arctic for marine fishes, the post-doc will estimate the field metabolic rates for a range of marine fish species using a novel otolith-based method and relate FMR to oceanographic and ecological conditions along north-south and fjord-offshore gradients in East Greenland. Experience with isotope analyses and arctic field work are assets.
The position is available from April 2026 or as soon as possible hereafter. For more information contact Professor Peter Grønkjær (Peter.Groenkjaer@bio.au.dk) or Professor Søren Rysgaard (rysgaard@au.dk)
Applicants must have a relevant PhD degree in biology, biogeochemistry, hydrology, glaciology, oceanography, geoscience or physics.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: 2 Postdoctoral positions in Intellectual History at the Department of History

We are looking for two innovative researchers with a background in history, philosophy, political theory, or literature preferably with a specialisation in the intellectual history of either Latin America or Greece in the 18th or 19th century.

The Republic of Newsletters seeks to rewrite the history of republicanism and the making of new democratic cultures in the Age of Revolutions by analysing connections and translation networks between four geographic zones that all underwent significant political and social change in the period between 1815 and 1840; namely France, Haiti, Greece, and Gran Colombia. The aim of the project is to understand how different conceptions of a republic and of political participation emerged in the period, and how such conceptions depended on domestic conditions as well as international connections.

The project will focus mainly, though not exclusively, on newspapers and periodicals as its source material. The project will furthermore seek to explore the perspectives of women, (formerly) enslaved people, and working-class people.

The successful applicants are expected to work closely with the project’s principal investigator, Nicolai von Eggers, and to be responsible for empirical research of one of the following two regions: (I) Gran Colombia, (II) Greece.

(10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position: Minority ethnic students in higher education – aspirations, resources and institutional norms

The postdoctoral project forms part of the larger research project Educational Optimism – Aspirational Orientations and Mobility of Minority Ethnic Youth, which examines the social and cultural factors underlying the increasing number of minority ethnic young people who enrol in and complete upper secondary education, as well as the significant rise over the past 10–15 years in the number who complete higher education. The overall project comprises three subprojects that explore these themes across different age groups and educational institutions.

The postdoctoral project investigates how educational aspirations and mobility are experienced, challenged and realised among minority ethnic students in higher education, with a focus on the collective resources developed among the young people and possible changes in institutional norms. The project includes six months of ethnographic fieldwork in two higher education programmes that are popular among minority ethnic students, as well as interviews with the students and their families.

(11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position in Political Science

EQUILIBRIUM investigates how regions can escape vicious cycles in state-citizen relations. In some contexts, poor state performance in the delivery of public goods and services reinforces negative population attitudes, which leads to the election of parties that limit the state’s resources and fewer applicants for public sector jobs, among others. This perpetuates the state’s poor performance, creating a self-reinforcing dynamic. The project examines which factors enable regions to break out of these negative patterns and shift toward more positive equilibria characterized by more favorable citizen attitudes.
The project develops new theoretical concepts and empirical measures, using a novel sequential research design that integrates observational data, large-scale public opinion surveys, and inquiries to public administrations. Empirically, the project will collect comprehensive data across five European countries (Denmark, Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania) and the United States. Additional information about the project’s content and goals can be found here.
