Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Associates – Sea Level Rise Projections and Climate Risk Assessment & Management

The Rutgers University Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences invites applications for highly motivated, creative postdoctoral associates with interests in (a) sea-level rise projections and/or (b) climate risk assessment and management. The candidate will join the Rutgers University Earth System Science & Policy Lab (earthscipol.net), under the direction of Professor Robert Kopp, and its collaborators in the Megalopolitan Coastal Transformation Hub (MACH), the NASA Sea-Level Change Team, and the Climate Impact Lab.
Research in the Earth System Science & Policy Lab addresses four interrelated questions: First, how has sea level changed in the past? Second, how may sea level change in the future in response to climate forcing? Third, how do climate and sea-level change impact the economy and human well-being? Finally, how can climate and sea-level science more effectively support climate risk management under deep uncertainty? The Lab’s sea-level projections are highly used; the Framework for Assessment of Changes To Sea-level (FACTShttps://www.fact-sealevel.org/), an open-source sea-level projection framework initially developed by the lab, supported the integration of projections for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

The Mickolajczyk laboratory is recruiting Postdoctoral Associates to engage in ongoing research projects relative to studying the mechanisms of pre-ribosome maturation by motor proteins and regulation and substrate-targeting by ATPase enzymes in ribosome biogenesis.  The main project involves studying the mechanisms of pre-ribosome maturation by motor proteins, an essential process for generating new ribosomes that are properly folded and competent for protein translation. Force spectroscopy (optical and magnetic tweezers), single-molecule fluorescence, and bulk biochemical methods will be used to investigate how these motor proteins convert the energy from ATP hydrolysis into mechanical work in order to promote pre-ribosomal folding. The assays developed will be used to benchmark wildtype versus disease-derived mutants of motor proteins to investigate the molecular bases of ribosomopathies and other ribosome-dependent diseases. The Post Doctoral Associate will also have the opportunity to participate in ongoing collaborative projects, as well as to spearhead new projects within the lab.

About Rutgers University, New Jersey, United States – Official Website

Rutgers University formally known as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a public land-grant research university based in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Chartered in 1766, Rutgers was originally called Queen’s College. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States, the second-oldest in New Jersey (after Princeton University), and one of the nine U.S. colonial colleges that were chartered before the American War of Independence. In 1825, Queen’s College was renamed Rutgers College in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose substantial gift to the school had stabilized its finances during a period of uncertainty. For most of its existence, Rutgers was a private liberal arts college but it has evolved into a coeducational public research university after being designated The State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey Legislature via laws enacted in 1945 and 1956.

Rutgers today has three distinct campuses, located in New Brunswick (including grounds in adjacent Piscataway), Newark, and Camden. The university has additional facilities elsewhere in the state, including oceanographic research facilities at the New Jersey shore. Rutgers is also a land-grant university, a sea-grant university, and the largest university in the state. Instruction is offered by 9,000 faculty members in 175 academic departments to over 45,000 undergraduate students and more than 20,000 graduate and professional students. The university is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of American Universities and the Universities Research Association. Over the years, Rutgers has been considered a Public Ivy.
