(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position in Algebraic Geometry
You will join a research group in algebraic geometry, working on a project focusing on Hilbert schemes of points, from a derived categorical perspective. This project aims to understand (derived categories of) Hilbert schemes of points on (noncommutative) surfaces, and compute their categorical invariants like Hochschild cohomology, and generalize these results to abstract symmetric powers of dg categories. You will be embedded in the research group of Pieter Belmans and ,more broadly, in the Utrecht Geometry Centre, a vibrant place with many activities like seminars, working groups, and conferences. The broader algebraic geometry landscape in the Netherlands is also highly active.
You will also have the opportunity to develop your own research agenda in the context of the research in algebraic geometry (and beyond) taking place at the Utrecht Geometry Centre.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc: Neurodiversity & Higher Education
The growing number of neurodivergent students poses both opportunities and challenges for higher education. Strategies for supporting this group are still poorly understood and teachers face barriers in their implementation. For instance, while group work may be difficult for some students and alternatives are recommended, teachers may question how these accommodations align with their learning objectives and whether they are fair to other students. This study engages neurodivergent students in participatory research to identify strategies increasing their inclusion. Then, it examines challenges experienced by teaching and supporting staff in applying these strategies through a newly developed dilemma game to produce feasible recommendations and an educational tool for teachers.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in (ocean) biogeochemical modelling
Microscopic calcite (CaCO3) shells of plankton sink through ocean waters to the seafloor by the trillions each year, taking along essential nutrients such as phosphorus (P). Ocean acidification is likely to alter global CaCO3 fluxes, with so far unknown consequences for P cycling, ocean fertility and CO2 uptake. Our lack of knowledge regarding these feedbacks limits our insight in ocean functioning under environmental change, both in the (ancient) past and the human-impacted future.
The NWO-funded PHOSFLUX project aims to shed light on these unknowns, by quantifying the role of CaCO3 fluxes and acidification in global marine P cycling through a combination of field work in the North Atlantic Ocean, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling. A scientific cruise with our research vessel Pelagia will allow us to investigate CaCO3 – P interactions in the field. Through controlled lab experiments, we will dive deeper into the underlying chemical and mineralogical processes, to eventually capture them in physical-chemical models that predict the impact of acidification on marine P cycling.
The PHOSFLUX project is a collaboration between the NIOZ (Dr Peter Kraal) and Utrecht University (UU; Prof. Dr Mariëtte Wolthers), combining unique sea-going and on-shore experimentation with advanced analytical tools to understand mineral-water interactions from microscopic to ocean-basin scale. Besides PI’s Kraal and Wolthers, the PHOSFLUX team consists of a NIOZ-based PhD student performing experiments and analyses, and a Utrecht University-based postdoctoral researcher who focuses on modelling the CaCO3 – P interactions.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Data-Driven Micromagnetic Modelling
This study contributes to SPARK, an ERC Consolidator project that aims to unlock magnetic information stored in nanoscale vortex-state particles in rocks and other geological materials. These particles are predicted to be exceptionally stable magnetic recorders, yet their internal magnetic structure and recording behaviour remain largely enigmatic. Your work will focus on developing computational tools to bridge the gap between high-resolution magnetic observations and micromagnetic simulations.
You will lead the computational and data-driven development of a novel extension to the micromagnetic modelling code MERRILL, enabling reconstruction of internal magnetic configurations in individual vortex-state particles directly from experimental data.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position in Gene Regulation
This project aims to systematically identify and characterize regulators of early transcription termination. Potential approaches will involve pooled CRISPR screens, genome editing mouse embryonic stem cells to allow for rapid protein depletion, mapping transcriptional effects (RNA-seq, TT-seq, PRO-seq), proximity labeling approaches, ChIP, and the bioinformatic analysis of generated sequencing data. You are encouraged to bring your own expertise to the current project and contribute your own project ideas.
While working on this project, you will hone your technical skills as well as skills in project design, writing, presenting, supervising, and collaborating. (06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in the simulation of coastal plastic pollution
Plastic items larger than a few centimeters (macroplastics) are a very visible testament of the pollution in the ocean and have an impact on marine organisms, and even more so when they fragment into microplastics. However, the amount of macroplastic can vary by orders of magnitude on scales of kilometers and days. In this large project funded by an NWO Vici grant, our team will develop a new numerical tool to understand this variation and predict the amount of macroplastic on Northwest European seas and coasts. Such a tool could be used to optimise beach clean-ups and thereby prevent these macroplastics from fragmenting into large numbers of microplastics.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will use the Parcels-code.org Lagrangian framework to simulate how buoyant virtual macroplastic particles get transported by sub-kilometer-scale coastal flows, and how they eventually end up on beaches. During the project, you will be involved in:
- setting up hydrodynamic coastal flow fields using SWAN, SWASH, SCHISM or a comparable model;
- writing python code to advect virtual macroplastic items in these flow fields using the Parcels-code.org framework;
- exploring the dispersion of these macroplastic items in these flow fields;
- comparing the results of the simulations to results from an experimental campaign of floating trackers;
- collaborating with a postdoc and two PhD candidates who simulate dispersion of macroplastic in an ocean general circulation model of the Northwest European shelf;
- further developing and improving the Parcels-code.org code;
- working within a large, interdisciplinary project.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on activism and mental health
The project investigates social movements at different scales (local, identity-based, and climate-related) and uses innovative qualitative and participatory methods to study how care, strategy, and collective action interact in times of societal crisis. You will join a vibrant academic community and benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration across social psychology, sociology, and public health. You will work under the supervision of Dr. Anna Zhelnina, principal investigator of the European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant project Care2Act and Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Social Science at Utrecht University.
You will lead one or more empirical case studies, focusing on activist initiatives in the Netherlands or Germany. We welcome candidates with interest in specific movements (e.g., local, identity-based, climate) and will collaboratively determine case study fit based on your expertise, language skills, and project needs. Together with the team, you will develop the qualitative research instruments, conduct fieldwork and participatory workshops with activist communities. You will also contribute to the project’s theoretical development. In addition to empirical fieldwork, you will contribute to conceptual publications and may co-author theoretical papers with the PI and team. Postdocs are also encouraged to develop their own publication plans within the project scope.
The Care2Act Project description: The current overlapping crises – political polarization, the climate, and security fears – present challenges for mental health and well-being. Engaging in collective action is one way to cope, but research shows it can also be exhausting and increase sensitivity to these problems and injustices. But activism can also foster empowerment and solidarity. Decades of research have provided insights into factors affecting mental health outcomes for activists. However, the traditional linear approach—focused on relationships between factors and outcomes—often fails to capture the mechanisms and dynamic processes that shape outcomes during engagement. Integrating psychological and sociological perspectives, Care2Act will apply a novel interactionist approach to activism and mental health, employing the concept of strategic care to highlight the dual task of regulating personal well-being while caring for the world.
