(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Forskare inom tidsupplöst mjukröntgen-spektroelektrokemi

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral position in robotized AI-driven remanufacturing of batteries

Rechargeable batteries are a key enabler for transitioning to a carbon-neutral future. Considering the enormous amounts of battery materials needed – e.g. for electrification of the vehicle industry – sustainability in materials and processes is of the highest importance. Regardless of the battery chemistry understudy, a circular battery value chain relies on efficient recycling. Current industrial recycling is mainly based on pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods, or a combination of those, to recover critical elements as well as elements that should not be released into the environment. Those methods are however energy, water, and chemical intense.

In this project, we aim to investigate and demonstrate an AI-driven fully automated and flexible robotized solution for the potentially more sustainable process of direct remanufacturing. First, a circular process is established in the form of a self-driving lab based on an industrial robot where Li-ion cells are manufactured, tested, analysed, disassembled, components washed, and remanufactured. The established process is optimized considering the chemical process solutions during electrode washing. Finally, the process is evaluated regarding potential for scaling to larger battery formats relevant for the vehicle industry. The research project is a collaboration between the Departments of Electrical Engineering and Chemistry within the battery initiative Compel.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: FORTE-funded Postdoctoral position in Immunology

The postdoctoral candidate will lead the development of new in vivo and in vitro technologies, including a mouse model of endometriosis in which endometrial tissue from patients is transplanted into the abdominal cavity of immunocompromised mice. These lesions can then be studied over time using intravital microscopy to elucidate immune cell interactions, vascularization, and growth. In addition, the effects of drug candidates on endometriotic tissue will be evaluated both in vivo and in vitro. The position is based in the laboratory of Professor Mia Phillipson, who leads an international, dynamic, and ambitious research team in ImmunoPhysiology with a well-established collaborative network and strong funding. The overarching aim of the research conducted in the Phillipson laboratory is to uncover new roles for immune cells and to identify ways to regulate their specific functions in relevant contexts such as organ development, cardiovascular disease, infection, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and diabetes. The Phillipson laboratory has a strong translational focus, which has resulted in a successful spin-out company for drug development currently in clinical phase 2 (Ilya Pharma, www.ilyapharma.se). The laboratory is situated in a unique environment that enables functional and long-term in vivo studies, and is in close proximity to the largest national infrastructure for Life Sciences in Sweden, SciLifeLab, where Professor Phillipson serves as vice director. (10) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral positions in Distributed Learning and Optimization

Distributed machine learning enables cross-device collaborative learning without exchanging raw data, ensuring privacy and reducing communication cost. In applications such as networked autonomous systems, mobile robotics etc., learning over wireless networks poses significant challenges due to limited communication bandwidth and channel variability, limited computational resources at the IoT devices, the heterogeneous nature of distributed data, and also randomly time-varying network topologies. In this project, the aim is to design and analyze fast, low-complexity communication-efficient distributed learning and optimization algorithms that are adaptive to the constraints posed by the underlying wireless networks. Furthermore, in distributed settings, malicious nodes can disrupt the training process through transmitting false data and byzantine attacks. Designing byzantine resilient distributed machine learning algorithms under privacy constraints is also a challenging task, that will be investigated in this project. The nature of this project is multi-disciplinary, requiring tools from distributed optimization and control, wireless communications and networks, signal processing, statistical machine learning, random matrix theory and privacy and security tools. This project will advance the state-of-the-art in robust distributed learning over wireless networks, and also contribute to design guidelines for practical learning algorithms.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
