Postdoctoral Fellowship (05) at Leiden University, Netherlands

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will play a central role in the project’s empirical and stakeholder-facing components. Your tasks include:

1. Designing and leading empirical research activities, including surveys, semi-structured interviews, and participatory workshops with persons with disabilities and relevant stakeholders.
   
   
2. Developing inclusive and accessible research instruments in close collaboration with disability organizations and care professionals.
   
   
3. Analysing qualitative and quantitative data and translating findings into academic publications, policy briefs, and accessible research outputs.
   
   
4. Contributing to the development and iterative validation of the project’s Framework for Change, using the Theory of Change methodology across work packages.
   
   
5. Supporting technology assessment activities related to assistive and sexual technologies, including expert engagement and exploratory user studies.
   
   
6. Contributing to dissemination and impact activities, including reports, public-facing materials, workshops, and presentations.
   
   
7. Participating in the broader research, teaching, and community activities of the eLaw Center.

• Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas (PaCE) is a new transdisciplinary project that aims to demonstrate the transformative potential of peacebuilding to safeguard biodiversity and improve local livelihoods in highly disputed areas such as the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea (SCS/WPS). The position will: (1) examine how the SCS/WPS contributes to socio-economic development, and human well-being; (2) disaggregate ecosystem service flows and equity in this flows for selected countries that stake a claim on the SCS/WPS; and (3) assess historical and current livelihood impacts of geopolitical conflict in the above-mentioned area. In addition, the appointed postdoc will actively contribute to multi-sectoral stakeholder workshops intended to foster enabling conditions of science diplomacy for biodiversity conservation of the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea. This position will be responsible for developing a field research protocol, and for local community outreach, in addition to the tasks outlined above. The postdoc position will be embedded in an interdisciplinary consortium consisting of scholars who are in Germany and Taiwan.

The Netherlands Institute for the Near East (NINO) is pleased to offer a two-year postdoctoral fellowship hosted at Leiden University. This initiative is designed to foster early-career researchers in the study of the Near East (incl. Egypt). The fellowship comes with full-time employment at the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University and with access to facilities at NINO (office space, computer, libraries and collections). The fellow is expected to reside in or near Leiden during the time of appointment and to participate in the intellectual life of the Institute. All applicants, but especially those with interdisciplinary research profiles beyond the Humanities, are encouraged to seek additional affiliation to relevant researchers or research groups in the Netherlands (Leiden or elsewhere).

The fellowship is aimed at candidates of any nationality who completed their doctorate (PhD) within the last four years and who have proven their potential to conduct and publish research at an international level. This year, we invite applications of researchers who work in the field of Egyptology.

During the fellowship, the successful candidate will work on their own research. They will design and teach a graduate course on “Methods and Concepts in Near Eastern Studies”, which is offered at a national level to advanced students from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including Near Eastern Archaeology and History, Assyriology, Classics, Egyptology, Hittitology and Coptic Studies. In their second year, the fellow will convene an international academic conference on a topic relevant to their own research, taking into consideration the research interests represented at the NINO and/or other institutes and universities in the Netherlands. A conference budget of € 8,000 is at their disposal. The proceedings of this conference are to be published after peer-review in one of NINO’s book series.
