Berkeley Lab’s Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) has a new opening for a postdoctoral scholar to develop cutting-edge mathematics and algorithms to analyze complex data from Department of Energy (DOE) experimental facilities. 

This role involves research and development spanning areas such as optimization, Fourier analysis, numerical linear algebra, statistics, machine learning, and high-performance computing for one or more of the following: (1) reconstruction of 3D+ structure, heterogeneity, and/or dynamics from scattering and/or microscopy data; (2) autonomous analysis and decision making for self-driving and/or human-in-the-loop experiments; (3) computer vision for extracting complex patterns, structure, and meaning from images and/or volumes; and (4) new mathematics and algorithms leading to new applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence to analysis of experimental data. Of particular interest will be new approaches for tackling multimodal data, quantifying uncertainty, providing rigorous theoretical guarantees, and modelling complex physics, noise processes, and measurement error. You will work closely with mathematicians, software engineers, physicists, materials scientists, and beamline scientists to implement these new tools on HPC computer architectures and deliver them as user-friendly software to meet DOE experimental facility needs.

Under direct supervision, the post-doc will work in the Scientific Data Division at Berkeley Lab as part of the Computational Biosciences Group to perform research into control theory of neural population dynamics. This position has the specific focus of developing ML methods to assess the feedback controllability of neural population dynamics recorded from brain organoids. This position requires a high-degree of team work and interdisciplinary activities.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher – Ultrafast Science within the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Sciences (AMOS) group in the Chemical Sciences Division. This position will investigate the dynamics of ionized and excited molecules using extreme ultraviolet and X-ray photons and imaging techniques such as COLd Target Recoil Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS)/Reaction Microscopy (REMI).

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar – Polymer Dielectrics & Energy Storage within the Material Sciences division. This position will conduct research on polymer composite dielectrics for advanced energy storage applications. This position is part of a multidisciplinary program focused on the design, synthesis, processing, and characterization of organic–inorganic hybrid materials capable of reliable operation under demanding electrical and thermal conditions.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will lead hands-on experimental efforts, including polymer composite synthesis, thin-film fabrication, dielectric device preparation, and electrical characterization. The work emphasizes understanding structure–processing–property relationships in polymer-based dielectric materials and translating this understanding into improved capacitor performance. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar – AI for Functional Polymer Discovery within the Molecular Foundry division to support a newly funded two-year project focused on AI-driven discovery of high-performing polymer dielectrics for next-generation power electronics. 

In this role, the Postdoctoral Researcher will develop and implement a multimodal AI–digital twin framework that connects generative polymer design with physics-based multiscale simulations, machine-learning surrogate models, and experimental validation in a closed-loop workflow. This position will accelerate the design and discovery of biological materials for binding critical minerals and materials. The postdoc will be part of a collaborative team of researchers in the Molecular Foundry from the Biological Nanostructures, Data Science and Infrastructure, Imaging and Manipulation, and Inorganic facilities. The postdoc will create microarrays of metal-binding proteins and/or peptides and develop assays for metal binding. Based on genome-wide searches, candidate proteins will be screened for targeted metal binding using fluorescence, label-free, and mass spectroscopy techniques.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar within the Energy Technologies & Systems division. The HackingMaterials group has confirmed funding to hire a postdoc to develop theories and software for materials synthesis planning and automated solar data degradation pathway analysis based on literature data. You will support two DOE projects at 50% each. The first project is the DOE BES Data-Driven Synthesis Science program in which the postdoc will combine literature data extraction, LLM reasoning, and theoretical materials science to guide synthesis protocols for automated sol-gel and solid-state synthesis science. The second project is the DOE CMEI Durable Module Materials Program for which the postdoc will use literature data extraction to understand degradation pathways of materials in solar photovoltaic modules.

Berkeley Lab’s Applied Mathematics Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an immediate opening in the Quantum Information Science and Technology Group (QuIST) for a Quantum Devices Postdoctoral Fellow under the programs of Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) and Quantum System Accelerator (QSA). The primary goal of the position will focus on materials and electric field engineering of circuits to improve the coherence of superconducting qubits, including the optimization of electromagnetic design and development of new fabrication techniques and metrology. The position will have access to the state-of-the-art superconducting circuit fabrication facility, quantum measurement lab, and advanced material characterization tools at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The position will also be on the team for development and fabrication of multiqubit, multilayer quantum processor unit (QPU), where the result of Josephson junction engineering will be implemented.
