Berkeley Lab’s Center for Advanced Mathematics for Energy Research Applications (CAMERA) has a new opening for a postdoctoral scholar to develop cutting-edge mathematics and algorithms to analyze complex data from Department of Energy (DOE) experimental facilities.
This role involves research and development spanning areas such as optimization, Fourier analysis, numerical linear algebra, statistics, machine learning, and high-performance computing for one or more of the following: (1) reconstruction of 3D+ structure, heterogeneity, and/or dynamics from scattering and/or microscopy data; (2) autonomous analysis and decision making for self-driving and/or human-in-the-loop experiments; (3) computer vision for extracting complex patterns, structure, and meaning from images and/or volumes; and (4) new mathematics and algorithms leading to new applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence to analysis of experimental data. Of particular interest will be new approaches for tackling multimodal data, quantifying uncertainty, providing rigorous theoretical guarantees, and modelling complex physics, noise processes, and measurement error. You will work closely with mathematicians, software engineers, physicists, materials scientists, and beamline scientists to implement these new tools on HPC computer architectures and deliver them as user-friendly software to meet DOE experimental facility needs.

Under direct supervision, the post-doc will work in the Scientific Data Division at Berkeley Lab as part of the Computational Biosciences Group to perform research into control theory of neural population dynamics. This position has the specific focus of developing ML methods to assess the feedback controllability of neural population dynamics recorded from brain organoids. This position requires a high-degree of team work and interdisciplinary activities.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar – Protein-Nanoparticle Probes for Cellular Force Microscopy within the Molecular Foundry Division. This position will work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), primarily at the Molecular Foundry, in collaboration with the Joint Genome Institute (JGI). As part of a multidisciplinary team, the postdoc will help design, build, and demonstrate an Infrared Force Microscope (IFM) capable of sensing and imaging biological forces within and between living systems with unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution.
The IFM employs our Avalanching Nanoparticles (ANPs, described in Nature 637, 70 and Nature 589, 230) to measure intracellular and extracellular forces in microbial systems, including hydrostatic pressures and forces within biofilms. This position will lead in biofunctionalization of ANPs for initial measurements of live-cell biological forces of the instrument. The postdoc will also optimize ANP surfaces and delivery methods to introduce ANP probes into microbial systems.

This position will accelerate the design and discovery of biological materials for binding critical minerals and materials. The postdoc will be part of a collaborative team of researchers in the Molecular Foundry from the Biological Nanostructures, Data Science and Infrastructure, Imaging and Manipulation, and Inorganic facilities. The postdoc will create microarrays of metal-binding proteins and/or peptides and develop assays for metal binding. Based on genome-wide searches, candidate proteins will be screened for targeted metal binding using fluorescence, label-free, and mass spectroscopy techniques.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar within the Accelerator Technology & Applied Physics division. This position will join the Fusion Science & Ion Beam Technology Program in the ATAP Division. As part of our Quantum-Information-Science projects, the successful candidate(s) will contribute to the development of color center synthesis, characterization, and integration for quantum sensing and quantum networking applications.
Working closely with scientists and engineers within our Program, the postdoc(s) will design, implement, and utilize novel instrumentation and modified instruments to form color centers using particle beams and lasers. A focus of the research will be on the characterization of multiple qubits systems. Integration of these color centers for quantum information science applications is also of interest.
The position involves collaborations with researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and LaserNetUS facilities, where experiments on color center formation using laser-driven ion pulses are conducted. Additionally, the postdoc(s) will interact with a theory group at LBNL to advance our understanding of color center formation kinetics and coherence properties in materials such as diamond, silicon, and other semiconductors.

Berkeley Lab’s Applied Mathematics Computational Research Division (AMCR) has an immediate opening in the Quantum Information Science and Technology Group (QuIST) for a Quantum Devices Postdoctoral Fellow under the programs of Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) and Quantum System Accelerator (QSA). The primary goal of the position will focus on materials and electric field engineering of circuits to improve the coherence of superconducting qubits, including the optimization of electromagnetic design and development of new fabrication techniques and metrology. The position will have access to the state-of-the-art superconducting circuit fabrication facility, quantum measurement lab, and advanced material characterization tools at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
