Postdoc summary/title: Two Postdoctoral Researchers on AI & Politics

We are seeking for two ambitious postdoctoral researchers for the interdisciplinary Research Priority Area AI & Politics. As artificial intelligence (AI) diffuses through our lives, it reconfigures central aspects of politics and society as we know it. It affects political deliberation as well as how and to whom public services are delivered.  It  also  transforms  political  issues  into  technical  problems  to  be  solved  through  private  means,  thus  replacing or   democratic  institutions  with  private  interests.  Fuelled  by  rapidly  expanding  automated  data  collection,  AI  is  an  influential  tool  in  the  hands  of  the  powerful,  while also opening novel avenues for resistance.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Two Postdoctoral Researcher positions – Emotions and bodies in journalism and documentary-making

We are looking for two independent, result-oriented, and ethically minded Postdoctoral Researchers who care about journalism and documentary-making, have strong expertise in qualitative research methods, and are interested in investigating the emotional and bodily dimensions of media work.

As a Postdoctoral Researcher, you will conduct research within a larger project examining the epistemic value of emotions and bodies in journalism and documentary-making. The project seeks to empirically, theoretically, and practically integrate emotions and bodies in journalism and documentary work, and involves ethnographic research across Central and Eastern Europe and an experiment with nature retreats for media professionals.
You will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research among media professionals covering politics, conflict, or culture – in particular, either investigative journalists and documentary makers, or artists-journalists and cultural journalists – in two countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Postdoc 1 will focus on investigative journalists and documentary makers in Slovakia and Hungary, Postdoc 2 will focus on cultural and artistic journalists in Czechia and Poland. You will closely collaborate with Johana Kotišová as the principal investigator, and two other doctoral and postdoctoral researchers working on the other CEE countries, Ukraine, and Georgia.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc ERC Project FIRMS: How Firms Shape Career Inequality Through (Mental) Health

The project conceptualizes firms as social environments that differ in authority structures, work intensity, technological change, and workplace culture. These organizational differences can systematically affect workers’ mental health, for example through exposure to stress, insecurity, or limited control at work. Mental health, in turn, shapes careers by influencing sickness absence, job mobility, and long-term wage growth. You will study when and for whom mental health functions as a mechanism linking firm contexts to unequal career trajectories.

Your research addresses a central theoretical question: how do differences between firms translate into persistent career inequality through workers’ (mental) health

Empirically, you will work with rich longitudinal linked employer–employee data combined with population-wide health registers, focusing primarily on the Netherlands and Norway. These data make it possible to follow workers and firms over long periods and to identify how firm-level conditions are associated with mental health outcomes and subsequent career inequality.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Traumascapes & International Crisis

The NWA-NWO project ‘Traumascapes. Valuing, Negotiating and Sharing Sites of Trauma, Pain, and Loss’ has a vacant postdoc researcher position as part of the sub-project ‘traumascapes in times of international crisis’. This postdoc project examines the impact of these international crises on the experience of, and social dialogue about, Dutch and (post)colonial traumascapes. In the face of global crises such as the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, migration, and systemic injustice, traumascapes in the Netherlands play a crucial role in connecting historical memory to contemporary international crises and societal challenges. Key Dutch collective memories, such as the Holocaust, resistance during the Second World War, and the colonial legacy of the Netherlands, particularly in Indonesia and Suriname continue to shape both national and international discourses of heritage, memory, and trauma. This means that considering Dutch traumascapes solely from a national perspective would limit the possible interpretations and meanings these places carry. Building on this transnational framing, the project approaches Dutch and (post)colonial traumascapes as sites of agonistic memory: spaces in which historical meaning is not settled but continuously negotiated, contested, and rearticulated (Hansen, Bull 2016). Rather than treating memory as a consensual or stabilising force, the project foregrounds contestation as a productive and constitutive element of democratic memory cultures, and equally destabilising of liberal norms. Traumascapes are understood not only as lieux de mémoire that commemorate past suffering, but as arenas in which conflicting interpretations, moral claims, and political demands coexist and come into tension. From this standpoint, memories of the Holocaust, colonial violence, and slavery cannot be fully integrated into a single, coherent narrative without obscuring the asymmetries of power, responsibility, and historical experience that continue to shape contemporary debates. Agonistic memory acknowledges these asymmetries while insisting on the legitimacy of conflict as a mode of engagement with the past. Within the Dutch context, such contestation is increasingly visible. Public debates around colonial monuments, apologies and reparations for slavery, the interpretation of resistance and collaboration during the Second World War, and the place of Holocaust memory in multicultural society reveal how traumascapes function as flashpoints for broader struggles over identity, belonging, and historical accountability. These struggles are further intensified by global developments, such as ongoing wars, migration flows, and international justice claims, which reframe local memory sites within wider geopolitical and moral horizons. The project, therefore, examines how Dutch traumascapes mediate this context rather than resolve it.  In doing so, the project contributes to ongoing debates on democratic memory cultures by demonstrating how agonistic approaches to heritage and remembrance can foster critical engagement without collapsing into relativism or denial.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc on Modelling Global Marine Phytoplankton-Virus Interactions

The PHYVIR project: One of the major challenges in oceanography is how to capture biological processes in mathematical models used for e.g. climate predictions. Despite their minute size, marine phytoplankton are vital for marine ecosystem productivity and play a key role in global carbon and nutrient cycling. However, like all life on Earth, phytoplankton are susceptible to viral infections. Viral-induced lysis of phytoplankton cells redirects the flow of energy and elements, with expected far-reaching consequences for ocean ecosystem structure and functioning.

Still, phytoplankton viral lysis rates are poorly constrained; to what extent viral infections affect phytoplankton stoichiometry and functional traits, as well as how this is influenced by global (climate -induced) environmental stressors, is understudied; and a comprehensive understanding of the geographical distribution of viruses and phytoplankton hosts is lacking. Moreover, virus-host dynamics in global ecosystem and biogeochemical models are generally poorly addressed.

The PHYVIR project aims to integrate complementary expertise – developing and applying mathematical models and bioinformatics to viral ecologyphytoplankton physiology and biological oceanography – to bridge the knowledge gaps that limit our current understanding and predictive power of how viral infections impact phytoplankton communities and global biogeochemical fluxes.

(09) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc Position on Embodied World Models

Progress in multimodal world models has been astonishing in the past few years and allow to equip robots with world knowledge of scenes, objects, and human activities. Robots should then be able to perceive and act upon the sensed world, be it that current solutions require data diversity, task circumstances, and the label vocabulary all to be pre-defined, stationary and controlled. As soon as these ‘closed world’ deep learning assumptions are broken, perceptual understanding suffers and oftentimes catastrophically. Hence, robots equipped with state-of-the-art multimodal perceptual skills will experience great difficulty generalizing to perception tasks in an open world where sensory and semantic conditions will differ considerably from those perceived during training. Our key research question is: How to enable multimodal perception for robots that is robust to sensory and semantic shifts between training and operation conditions?
