(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Hydrology and Catchment Biogeochemistry
The Department of Geography and Social Anthropology at NTNU has a vacancy for a 3 years Postdoctoral Fellow position in Hydrology and Catchment Biogeochemistry.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will work on the project Adapting to climate risks via landscape-scale solutions: effects of peatland restoration on floods and water browning (ANTIPASTI).
The project clarifies how peatland restoration modifies the way landscapes retain, transform and release water and biogeochemical elements, eventually affecting their capability of modulating floods and aquatic carbon fluxes.
The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and realized in partnership with the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy), the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA, Norway).
As a Postdoctoral Fellow you will join an interdisciplinary, international and stimulating academic environment, with supporting colleagues for you to excel in your academic career. The Postdoctoral Fellow position may entail a secondary affiliation and recurrent research visits at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento (Italy).

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoktor i matematikkdidaktikk
Prosjektet handler om masteremner i norsk matematikklærerutdanning. En mastergrad i grunnskolelærerutdanning med studieretning matematikk skal gi studentene fagdidaktisk, profesjonsrettet fordypning, men den skal også være et akademisk løp som kvalifiserer for videre akademisk arbeid. Denne doble intensjonen er en manifestasjon av lærerutdanningens stadige praksis-teori-spenningsforhold, og postdoktorprosjektet vil gå inn i problemstillinger og finne innovative løsninger på utfordringene som finnes.
Det er gjort svært få studier generelt på masternivå i matematikklærerutdanning i Norge, og de som finnes, handler typisk om selve masteroppgaven. I motsetning til de første årene av lærerutdanningen, er masterløpet ganske lite regulert av nasjonale styringsdokumenter, og det gjøres antakelig mye ulikt ved institusjonene. Prosjektet skal undersøke og kartlegge disse praksisene, delvis basert på datagrunnlaget som samles våren 2026 i MaTEN-prosjektet, og delvis gjennom egne undersøkelser (eks. intervjuer, dokumentanalyser, observasjon). I tillegg vil postdoktoren kunne igangsette intervensjon(er) i et eller flere masteremner vi tilbyr ved NTNU.
Teoretisk vil prosjektet overordnet ta utgangspunkt i begreper fra Hammerness (2005), som beskriver lærerutdanning ut fra fem begreper: Visjoner for hva god undervisning er, verktøy for undervisning (materielle og teoretiske), forståelser for matematikk og læring av matematikk, praksiser å ta i bruk, og holdninger til matematikkfaget og matematikkundervisning. En kartlegging vil handle om hvordan disse aspektene kommer til uttrykk i ulike emner. Prosjektet vil også ha en mer spesifikk teoretisk forankring, for eksempel i den antropologiske teorien om det didaktiske (ATD, Chevallard, 2019). I ATD ser man på hvordan kunnskap forflytter seg (transponeres) mellom ulike kontekster (institusjoner). Matematikklærerutdanning kan sees som en institusjon, der deltakerne forholder seg til kunnskap om matematikk og kunnskap om matematikkdidaktikk – kunnskap som er utviklet i akademiske institusjoner. Samtidig er lærerutdanningen tett koblet til skolen, en institusjon som også forholder seg til matematisk kunnskap transponert fra akademia. En annen mulig teoretisk forankring som rommer både individets læring og institusjonelle perspektiver er CHAT/kulturhistorisk aktivitetsteori (Engeström, 2019). Medlemmer av forskningsgruppa har tidligere skrevet om matematikklærerutdanning ved hjelp av begge de nevnte teoriene.

Ved Institutt for tverrfaglige kulturstudier (KULT), NTNU, har vi en treårig postdoktor-stilling ledig i et prosjekt som undersøker den historiske og samtidige bruken, betydningen og styringen av vitenskapelige modeller av fjordsystemer. Prosjektet er del av forskningsprosjektet The PLUME (prosjektbeskrivelse fås ved henvendelse til Terje Finstad) som er et tverrfaglig prosjekt finansiert av NTNUs tematiske satsingsområde Hav og kyst. Målet i The PLUME er å forstå Trondheimsfjorden som et sammenhengende system – fra elveutløp til det åpne hav, fra fysisk dynamikk til offentlighetens og forvaltningens kjennskap til fjorden. Prosjektet er tverrfaglig og har deltakere fra matematikk, ingeniørvitenskap, biologi, industriell økologi, og vitenskaps- og teknologistudier. Det er del av forskningsteamet Vann og vannsystem og varer fra høsten 2026 til midten av 2029 og består av tre arbeidspakker: WP1: Vanndynamikk, WP2 Næringspåvirkning, og WP3 Samfunnsmessig interaksjon. Prosjektet ledes av Mats Ehrnström (leder) and Terje Finstad (med-leder).
Den utlyste stillingen er del av WP3 Samfunnsmessig interaksjon og skal undersøke det historiske og samtidige samspillet mellom vitenskapelig kunnskap om vann og vannsystem og sosiale, politiske og forvaltningsmessige krefter som former og formes av kunnskap. Fjorder er liminale områder der elver, regnvann, kloakk og avrenning fra landbruk, veier og byer møtes. Som vi ser i dag, f.eks. Oslofjorden, kan deres tilstand bli gjenstand for intens debatt. Kunnskap om naturfenomener og prosesser har spilt og spiller en stadig større rolle i forståelsen og forvaltningen av fjorder og deres helse. Prosjektet skal derfor undersøke og beskrive samspillet mellom sosiale krefter (politikk, verdier, forestillinger og interesser) og vitenskapelig kunnskap om fjordsystemer. I tillegg skal prosjektet bidra til å kommunisere på tvers av vitenskap, politikk og forvaltning. Professor Terje Finstad og seniorforsker Sara Heidenreich leder WP3 ved KULT. Stillingen innebærer samarbeid med WP1 og WP2 når det gjelder kommunikasjon av nye modeller og formater for kommunikasjon.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Steam Turbines for Ships
Naval vessels and polar icebreakers have operated on nuclear power for decades. Nuclear propulsion is emerging as a serious candidate for decarbonization of deep-sea and high-utilization vessels in Norway and internationally, offering greater energy independence, higher sustained speeds, and extended range compared to conventional fuel-based propulsion. International bodies are actively establishing the frameworks that will govern the civil use of nuclear propulsion and the foundational engineering knowledge is being established right now.
SAINT – Sustainable, Applied and Industrialized Nuclear Technology – is a research project investigating the use of nuclear propulsion for commercial and specialist maritime vessels and aims at launching 2-3 demonstration ships in the early 2030s. SAINT addresses the technical, safety, and operational challenges that must be resolved before such systems can be responsibly deployed. PhD and Post Doc candidates will be among the people shaping this emergent field. In the intersection of nuclear and maritime engineering qualified engineers and researchers are scarce globally. Candidates who complete a PhD within the SAINT project will be well positioned for careers in nuclear safety, maritime regulation, advanced vessel design, and the emerging commercial nuclear sector.
The project is hosted at the Department of Ocean Operations and Civil Engineering (IHB) at NTNU in Ålesund, a campus with deep roots in maritime engineering and ship design. Around 70 PhD students are at NTNU in Ålesund, roughly 40 of which are in IHB working on ship design, naval control systems and in shipping management. Within the project we are aiming to recruit up to ten PhD students and one or two Post Docs to work in parallel across the core engineering challenges of maritime nuclear propulsion, creating an unusually dense and collaborative internal research environment in which you will collaborate with researchers working across nuclear engineering, naval architecture, electrical power systems, and maritime operations.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctor in social anthropology – Hot societies: Anthropology of heatwaves and extreme heat
Many parts of the world are experiencing more extreme heat and unseasonal heatwaves, which present challenges of multiple kinds. Such heat is a public health concern, an infrastructure challenge, an issue of preparedness, as well as an intimate bodily experience. Heat is, in other words, something that can affect all areas of human life and society.
The successful candidate may study one of several different areas within an anthropology of heat, depending on their background, expertise and interest. For instance:
- Readiness and response: how societies are organizing heat response, cooling centers, collective support during heat waves.
- Heat, health and inequality: how extreme heat impacts unevenly.
- Heat, emotion, experience and narratives: how is uncommon heat experienced in bodily and emotional ways? How are these experiences narrated?
- Heat and compounding effects: how does heat combine with drought, unrest, austerity and other factors to cause “compound dispossession” (Harvey, Lien and Nyquist, 2024), and how do people respond?
- Unseasonal heat, agriculture, and livelihood: how do farmers respond to unseasonal heatwaves and the effects that new and unusual patterns of heat can have on their crops and livelihoods?

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science
This project investigates the causal effects of Voting Advice Applications (VAAs) on political behavior. VAAs are increasingly prominent tools in modern electoral campaigns, yet rigorous causal evidence of their effects remains limited. The project leverages a collaboration with NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation), which operates one of Norway’s most widely used VAAs, to run large-scale data collections and survey experiments in connection with the 2027 Norwegian election. The project aims to produce causal estimates of VAAs on vote choice, political engagement, and political knowledge. You will work with experienced researchers with a strong interest in causal inference, with the aim of publishing the research papers in top journals in Political Science.

Ved Institutt for tverrfaglige kulturstudier (KULT) ved Det humanistiske fakultet (HF), NTNU, er det ledig en spennende 3-årig postdoktorstilling knyttet til forskningsprosjektet JUST-MAP – Co-producing place-based futures: Participatory mapping of socio-technical, temporal, and spatial dynamics for just transitions in mine reopenings.
Norges gruver vekkes til live igjen. Drevet av et stadig økende globalt behov for kritiske mineraler til grønn omstilling, forsvar og sikkerhet, planlegges det nå å gjenåpne flere nedlagte gruver i Norge. Men hva skjer når industrihistorie møter framtidens klimamål, og når nasjonale sikkerhetsinteresser kolliderer med lokale interesser og samiske rettigheter til land og levebrød?
JUST-MAP går rett inn i dette spenningsfeltet. Ved å kombinere teknologi- og vitenskapsstudier (STS) med geografi utvikler prosjektet et sosioteknisk og spatiotemporal rammeverk som knytter framtidsforestillinger om «grønn» omstilling med stedbunden industriarv og levde erfaringer. Metodisk bygger prosjektet på feltarbeid og motkartlegging (countermapping), en tilnærming som skal synliggjøre lokale og samiske kunnskaper, fortellinger og erfaringer i formelle plan- og beslutningsprosesser.
JUST-MAP ledes av forsker 1 Sara Heidenreich (KULT, HF) sammen med førsteamanuensis Martina Calovi (IGS, SU). Prosjektet er forankret i NTNUs satsningsområder NTNU Fellesskap og knyttet til forskningsgruppene Senter for klima, energi og miljø (CLEEN) og Spatial and temporal analytics. We have a vacancy for a full-time three year researcher at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, NTNU. The position is linked to AIMARIA – Accelerating Innovation in Marine AI-Powered Bioprospecting, a Horizon Europe Innovation Action coordinated by NTNU.
AIMARIA combines omics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, bioprocess development and sustainability assessment to accelerate the discovery and sustainable production of marine and aquatic natural products. At NTNU, a central part of the project is the development of more predictable and efficient methods for the refactoring and heterologous expression of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs).
The researcher will have a leading role in developing NTNUs experimental platform for BGC expression. The work will combine molecular biology, microbial strain engineering and synthetic biology with AI-supported design of regulatory DNA elements and expression constructs. The researcher will work closely with a PhD candidate recruited to the same scientific activity and with national and international partners in the AIMARIA consortium.
The position is well suited for a researcher who would like to develop and apply advanced synthetic-biology methods to challenging microbial expression systems and contribute to the production of biologically active natural products and enzymes.

The position is part of the research project “Prediction of genetic values and adaptive potential in the wild (GPWILD)” (https://www.ntnu.no/gjaerevoll/gpwild), funded through a Consolidator Grant by the European Research Council (ERC). A major goal of the project is to develop cutting-edge statistical methodology to analyse and make predictions from large-scale genomic data, which is currently generated for many wild animal populations. To this end, the project combines modern statistical methodology and builds on the current state-of-the art in animal breeding, human genomics, ecology and evolutionary biology. The post-doc will thus work with a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and can contribute towards the development of methods that will make an impact to better understand evolution and the robustness of wild anmial populations, with the ultimate goal to help preserving biodiversity.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctor fellow in multiscale biodiversity assessment of terrestrial ecosystems
The Gjærevoll Centre for Foresight Analysis of Biodiversity is looking for an ambitious ecologist with excellent skills in biodiversity informatics and modelling. The position is funded by the TRACE – Transport Research Centre for Nature, Environment and Land Use project, funded by the Research council of Norway and the Ministry of transport through the Transport 2050 program.
The position is within the research area “nature and biodiversity impacts of the transport sector” within the TRACE centre and will be part of a larger interdisciplinary group of recruitment positions at the Gjærevoll Centre for Biodiversity Foresight Analysis and the new Centre for Biodiversity Forecasting (both at NTNU) working to better understand biodiversity and how this is impacted by natural and anthropogenic drivers.
The successful candidate will work with spatial scales of biodiversity patterns in terrestrial ecosystems, using theoretical models and empirical analyses to assess robustness and sensitivity of ecosystems to environmental change. The main aim is to improve our understanding of spatial scales of anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity. The empirical work will include collection and analyses of new data, as well as previously collected data and information from public biodiversity databases. A main aim will be to develop indicators and metrices of anthropogenic impacts on the environment, which can be implemented in planning tools for minimizing nature and biodiversity losses while developing the transport system according to the principles of Avoid, Shift and Improve.
The candidate will conduct the work in collaboration with a highly interdisciplinary team within the TRACE centre and the Gjærevoll centre. Stakeholder engagement and communication with user groups, both in other fields of research, private and public enterprises as well as the society at large is expected.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow position: AI and Machine Learning for Energy Systems Modelling
Energy Systems Modelling is essential for providing insights and strategies to plan a carbon-neutral future. The implementation of an effective energy transition plan faces multiple challenges, spanning from integrating the operations of multiple energy carriers (gas, heating, electricity, etc.) and sectors (e.g., transport, buildings, industry, etc.) to appropriately modelling different spatial and temporal resolutions. The BEDØK group at the department runs several projects in these areas and offers the selected Postdoctoral Fellow flexibility to shape a focused research agenda. A key aspect of the position is to integrate and co-develop AI and machine learning techniques with energy system models. The candidate should have some competence in AI/ML for energy system applications and interest in developing new AI-enabled modelling approaches. Possible research directions or areas of applications include (but are not limited to):
- Power markets: Flexibility markets, TSO–DSO coordination, re-dispatch, cross-border integration, day-ahead/intraday markets, and other relevant topics.
