PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Water-Mediated Cooling of European Cities and Citizens
We are seeking a talented PhD candidate to join the Horizon Europe Innovation Action Project EUROASIS (EUROpean Adaptive, Systemic and Inclusive Solutions for heat resilience). This PhD position focuses on assessing whether innovative cooling interventions piloted in EUROASIS pilot cities will also perform in the project’s replicator cities and regions across Europe’s diverse hydroclimates.
As our PhD candidate, you will model the urban water-energy balance underlying (evapotranspirative) cooling—e.g., how greening and water features impact hydrometeorological conditions and translate into reduced heat-health risk based on temperature- and humidity-based heat indices. You will simulate these effects in the replicator cities against field measurements in a subset of them, and quantify the water demand of sustaining this cooling under extreme heat conditions. Your work will directly culminate in international peer-reviewed journal papers and foundational project deliverables.

We are seeking a talented PhD candidate to join the Horizon Europe Innovation Action Project EUROASIS (EUROpean Adaptive, Systemic and Inclusive Solutions for heat resilience). This PhD position will focus specifically on evaluating and upscaling a portfolio of systemic heat-mitigation innovations across four major European pilot cities: Amsterdam, Athens, Zaragoza, and Reggio Emilia.
You will assess how physical, nature-based, and digital interventions—ranging from Amsterdam’s network of shaded routes and heat shelters to Zaragoza’s xerophytic “climate oases”—alter the outdoor thermal conditions and directly minimize ambient heat exposure for urban populations. Collaborating with international partners (such as Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine and Atelier Franck Boutté), you will couple advanced microclimatic and urban morphology simulations with epidemiological data to quantify heat-health benefits. PhD position summary/title: PhD: State-Dependent Spatial Representations using immersive Virtual Reality
Spatial thinking plays a crucial role in understanding and communicating environmental issues, from climate adaptation and landscape planning to biodiversity loss, water management, and sustainable land use. These challenges often require people to reason about spatial processes that are not immediately visible: future scenarios, delayed consequences, cascading effects, or changes that unfold across places and time. To support better environmental decision-making and communication, we need to understand how people build mental representations of such complex, dynamic spatial systems.
Spatial cognition research has traditionally studied how people represent environments through concepts such as mental models, cognitive maps, and cognitive graphs. These approaches have provided important insights into how people perceive locations, learn route layouts, and understand spatial relations. However, they are primarily suited to stable environments and are less equipped to handle situations where the same place or action may have different spatial meaning or outcomes depending on context — for example, a landscape that changes with climate, or a local action that produces effects in another part of the system.
This PhD project investigates how people learn, update, and use spatial knowledge when the structure or meaning of an environment depends on hidden or changing conditions, which we refer to as state-dependent environments. Rather than treating spatial knowledge as a static map, the project asks how people construct and reason with representations that capture not only where things are, but also the conditions under which spatial relations hold, and how immersive virtual reality and behavioural data such as movement, interaction, and eye-tracking can be used to study this process.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Biodiversity monitoring for nature-inclusive agrifood transitions
Biodiversity restoration in agriculture and horticulture is urgently needed, but difficult to realize in practice. Farmers operate in complex systems: they are embedded in value chains, regional communities, regulatory environments, ecological landscapes, and business models that often prioritize short-term productivity and profitability. RISE addresses this challenge by developing systems-based tools and implementation pathways that help stakeholders make nature-inclusive decisions that are ecologically meaningful, economically viable, and socially supported.
RISE is an interdisciplinary project involving Eindhoven University of Technology, Wageningen University & Research, Leiden University, and Inholland University of Applied Sciences, together with a broad network of societal partners from agriculture, horticulture, regional development, water management, policy, and civil society. The project works in two regional case areas: Oostland Zuid-Holland, focused on greenhouse horticulture and Reusel-Zuid, focused on open-field agriculture. A third region on tree-nursing will be used for validation and replication.
This PhD position is hosted by Wageningen University & Research, within the Laboratory of Entomology and the crop protection team of the Greenhouse Unit in Bleiswijk. You will be part of a closely connected cohort of four PhD candidates working across universities and disciplines. All candidates receive cross-university supervision to ensure deep integration between innovation science, system dynamics, spatial modeling, and ecology.
The specific focus of this PhD project is biodiversity monitoring and biological pest control as an ecosystem service. You will study how biodiversity implementation in the two case areas is related to biological pest control as an ecosystems service, and validate key performing indicators. This includes the design of biodiversity heat maps, identifying key indicator species, setting up field and greenhouse experiments to validate ecosystem services, biodiversity monitoring, molecular gut content analyses of key predators and assessing biological control capacity with sentinel prey.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Portable mass spectrometry for food toxin detection
We have a PhD position available at the laboratory of Organic Chemistry (Wageningen University) in close collaboration with Wageningen Food Safety Research. The PhD position is available in the NWO-funded VIDI project GPS4FoodSafety, which is focused on studying novel routes towards achieving molecular selectivity in ambient ionization for portable mass spectrometry – to detect natural toxins in crops and water at the point-of-need.
In this challenging project, you will work as a PhD student to develop novel approaches to impart chemical selectivity on easy-to-use sample probes that can be coupled to a portable mass spectrometer – and ultimately used outside the laboratory setting in food safety applications.
You will focus on the chemical modification of cellulose paper to create highly selective solid-phase extraction devices to enrich targeted contaminants (plant toxins and cyanobacterial toxins). Moreover, 3D-printing and rapid prototyping will be applied to develop modular sample extraction and handling devices, as well as for integrating the selective probes with the portable mass spectrometer.

The project focuses on understanding of reaction mechanisms and establishing structure–reactivity relationships in CO2 and CO heterogeneous catalysis using a combination of DFT, AIMD, and machine-learning potential driven MD. PhD position summary/title: PhD in Printing of Complex Fluids
This project will explore how multicomponent fluids flows in droplets just after being created during the process of inkjet printing using piezoactuation. Inkjet printing has moved beyond printing graphics on paper, and its applicability has been demonstrated for numerous applications such as contact lenses, dental implants, electronic circuit boards, solar panels, 3D rapid prototypes, and even for printing of DNA and protein substances. These new applications demand the utmost in terms of reliability, as an imprecise deposition of even a single droplet can render the printed application useless, e.g. circuit failures in printed electronics. The state-of-the-art applications require inkjet printing to generate as small as possible droplets (few microns in size) of highly complex fluids at the highest possible rates (10000 droplets per second), while also maintaining constant droplet volumes and impact velocities (of several meters per second).
Previous studies have revealed that solid impurities in the ink can cause bubble entrainment causing cavitation or by directly interacting with the oscillating meniscus. Ultra high-speed experimental imaging and corresponding highly resolved numerical simulations have shown that this vorticity field in the fluid arises due to the misalignment of the density and pressure gradients at the liquid-air interface within the nozzle, resulting in meniscus distortions and bubble pinch-off, yielding what are known as satellite droplets. These unwanted droplets can cause direct failure or loss of performance of the final printed features. As inks increase in complexity due to multiple components, and additionally as ink solid fraction, e.g. pigments, increase, the likelihood of these impurities forming increases dramatically.
The aim of this PhD project is to gain an in-depth quantitative understanding of the physicochemical hydrodynamics governing the jetting behavior of a complex multicomponent fluid, i.e. a fluid containing multiple miscible liquids, surfactants, polymers, and colloidal pigment particles just after droplet creation.
