(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position in Quantum Matter Theory

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious Ph.D. student in quantum condensed matter theory for a project on superconducting spintronics. The overall aim of the Ph.D. project is to theoretically explore and engineer enhanced and entirely new spintronics functionalities using superconducting hybrid structures. In spintronics, the electron spin instead of its charge is controlled and manipulated, which is both faster and more energy-efficient than today’s charge-based electronics. Superconducting spintronics both addresses the most problematic issues in spintronics and introduces entirely new quantum-based functionality. This project will focus on hybrid systems combining conventional superconductors with novel spin-orbit coupled materials, including topological insulators and Weyl semimetals, and also on high-temperature cuprate superconductors, which will enable dramatically higher operating temperatures. The project will involve both numerical and analytical work.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in materials chemistry – synthesis and characterization of nanolaminated materials

We are looking for a new Ph. D student to the Inorganic Chemistry Program. The research project is focused on new nanolaminated materials, synthesized both as bulk material using high temperature synthesis and as thin films from the vapor. The major aim of the project is to clarify the correlation between structure, composition and properties of the nanolaminates. The new materials will be characterized with x-ray and neutron diffraction, microscopy (SEM and TEM) and with different spectroscopic techniques such photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy.  An important part of the project is to produce two-dimensional (2D) layers by chemical etching of the nanolaminates.  Interaction with other research groups to model and characterize the new materials is an essential part of the project. Some teaching on undergraduate courses may be a part of the position.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in biomedical engineering focused on biofabrication

In this project we aim to study how the physical and chemical properties of the cell microenvironment play a role on cell function. 3D-models will be developed to assess the biological response to newly developed biomaterials, and as a future goal, to be used as implantable materials themselves. To achieve this, additive manufacturing will be combined with live cell imaging and molecular biology to map protein expression levels and epigenetic changes in the cultured cells. In this research you will fabricate various polymeric materials and hydrogels with different physical and biochemical properties using traditional techniques as well as an extrusion 3D-printer, and to monitor the interaction and response of immune cells with the fabricated materials through analytical techniques. Further investigations may include the suitability of the 3D-printed structures for applications in immunotherapy, such as implantable scaffolds and injectable soft materials capable of releasing programmed immune cells (T cells) or immunoregulatory agents for cancer treatment.

PhD position summary/title: 3 PhD positions in Computer Science and Embedded Systems

The functionality as well as economical value of many industrial systems and products, for instance cars, airplanes, drones/blimps, and medical devices, is today defined and realized by embedded software. A key challenge in the design of such systems is the ability to update software (e.g., to add new features, to customize a system, or to fix security vulnerabilities) without compromising the overall safety and security. This is extremely difficult due to the complexity of today’s software and hardware architectures, with the result that safe system updates after deployment become nearly impossible. Uppsala University has two new exciting projects about updatable, next-generation embedded systems: the project CUSTOMER, funded as an ERC Advanced Grant, and the project UPDATE, funded by the KA Wallenberg Foundation. The projects bring together world-leading research groups in several areas related to Embedded Systems Design and Implementation: the Uppsala Networked Objects group, the Verification and Testing group, and the Embedded Systems group. Please see Embedded systems for more details.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in collaboration between Department of Business Studies and Department of Law

The commercial law group is situated in the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Business Studies, and this has consequences for the theoretical and methodological directions of its teaching and research. Traditionally, commercial law is concerned with the rules and norms that govern economic activities nationally and internationally. The commercial law group at Uppsala University, however, takes a broader law and business perspective which includes studies of the public domain. Studies in law and business are often trans-/cross- or multidisciplinary in character, connecting to social science disciplines such as business and sociology. Using this law and business perspective as a point of departure, the accepted doctoral student will pursue his/her research studies in one of the 15 research topics offered by the Faculty of Law (Jurisprudence, Private Law, European Law, Fiscal Law, Public International Law, Business Law, Administrative Law, Private International Law, Constitutional Law, Medical Law, Environmental Law, Public Law, Civil and Criminal Procedural Law, Legal History and Criminal Law).

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
