You will work on the design, synthesis and characterisation of polar nematic materials. This is an opportunity to work for the H2OforAll EU project and be part of a creative team in the Distributed Intelligent Social Computing lab and in synergy with water@leeds. The goal of this project is to assess sources of drinking water pollutants (Disinfection ByProducts – DBPs) by developing suitable analytical techniques for monitoring such compounds, modelling their spreading through drinking water supply systems and evaluating their environmental and public health impact.

We seek a post-doctoral research fellow to join a large five-year, collaborative, EPSRC-funded project. This exciting three-year position will give you the opportunity to work at the forefront of our rapidly growing field. You will focus on the fabrication and characterisation of high-performance terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) with the aim of increasing the maximum operating temperature in continuous-wave (CW) mode. This will be achieved through a combination of active region design optimisation; advanced fabrication techniques, including wafer-bonding and dry-etching; and simulation and engineering of the device thermal management. The applications for this work include high precision spectroscopy and high-speed wireless communications.

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work in a collaborative team to undertake data analysis, model development, dissemination, and publication of the ESRC project: “Understanding how constraints on access to finance and under-investment impact on productivity growth in smaller firms”. The project team have developed an aspiring, innovative, and impactful research agenda to address important policy issues that support economic recovery. The candidate will work closely with academics from 7 UK universities (Oxford Brooks, Warwick, St Andrews, Bath, Edinburgh, Birmingham, and Sussex) under the supervision of Professor Nick Wilson. 

Quantifying the potential of different agricultural practices and interventions to sequester soil carbon (SOC) and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is key for reaching Paris Climate Agreement goals and the Net Zero targets set by the UK government and the European Union. In the UK, this evidence is urgently needed to set the new Environmental Land Management (E.L.M.) agricultural policy post-Brexit and meet the rapidly growing global investment market for climate mitigation measures, including private businesses off-setting or in-setting (i.e. mitigating within supply chains).

We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral research fellow to join the Fontana and Calabrese labs at the University of Leeds. The fellow will be part of a large team (£5.7M, funded by a BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger grant). The team aims to unravel the ‘ribosome code’, rules that explain how compositionally dissecting ribosomes enable translation of specific sets of mRNA. Specifically, the Research Fellow in Structural Biology will focus on the structural characterisation of the different ribosomes that we will purify during the project. This will include isolating specialised ribosomes from a variety of organisms, and structurally characterising these ribosomes by cryo-electron microscopy and structural mass spectrometry. This will be possible by taking advantage of the state-of-the-art equipment available at the Astbury Biostructure Laboratory (ABSL), which includes: two Titan Krios microscopes, equipped with Falcon 4 and Selectris Falcon 4 direct electron detectors; an Orbitrap Ultra-High Mass Range mass spectrometer (for native mass spectrometry of intact ribosomes); and a Orbitrap Eclipse mass spectrometer (for cross-linking mass spectrometry). We anticipate that by understanding the structure of different specialised ribosomes, by exploiting our combined cryo-EM and mass spectrometry toolkit, we will be able to dissect conserved mechanisms of ribosome specialisation across eukaryotes, allowing us to unravel the ‘ribosome code’.

We are looking for an outstanding Research Fellow to join the project “Dynamic Control of Mineralization”, which is funded under an ERC Advanced grant to Professor Fiona Meldrum in the School of Chemistry. This project will take inspiration from biomineralization to achieve unprecedented – dynamic – control over crystallization processes.  To achieve this ambitious goal, it is necessary to create well-defined reaction environments, to rigorously characterise nucleation and growth with excellent time resolution and to be able to interact with a forming crystal. Thanks to advances in microfabrication techniques and analytical methods, we finally have the tools required to meet these demands.  

We are looking for a creative, interdisciplinary researcher to join the project team and advance our understanding of the economic and social values of insects within the UK. The successful applicant will lead on work to: 1) Develop economic models of the economic value of ecosystem services provided by UK insects, 2) develop and conduct surveys and interviews in order to establish the social values associated with UK insects and 3) map and model how these values are likely to change under future conditions. Collectively, this work will put the successful candidate at the forefront of interdisciplinary research and provide a dynamic skillset and knowledge base for their career progression. The Whitehouse research group is seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to investigate how the human tumour virus, Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), manipulates host cell non-coding RNAs to enhance its own replication. The project will use a range of molecular and cell biology approaches to highlight a novel KSHV-mediated mechanism to regulate viral gene expression. Moreover, this project aims to identify a novel targets for antiviral intervention for this important human tumour virus.

AsCaP is a multi-institution award, and the current post will be responsible for delivering the workstream related to behavioural science and cancer prevention.
