Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in hydrological modelling and data assimilation in cold regions
Global warming is accelerating snow-glacier retreat and shifting hydrology in cold regions, which affects sustainable development of downstream residents. There is a need for improved knowledge of snow-glacier dynamics and their impacts on hydrology. Hydrological modelling is an important tool to extend limited in-situ data to help us improve understanding of snow-glacier hydrological processes, and is the only feasible way to predict responses of snow and glaciers to future climate change. However, three main sources of uncertainties (model structure, model forcing data and parameters) restrict the performance of hydrological models. This project will work on reducing uncertainties in hydrological models (particularly our recently developed flexible model, see the references mentioned below) by using satellite remote sensing and advanced data assimilation. This project will focus on several well-gauged catchments in Northern Sweden and China, but other cold regions with good data availability could also be considered.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in modeling of bioaerosols, layer-clouds and climate with AI
Bioaerosols in mixed-phase layer-clouds can initiate ice and thereby may influence the precipitation and microphysical properties of the clouds, such as the numbers and sizes of cloud-particles aloft. This in turn may influence radiative fluxes and meteorological conditions at the land surface where the bioaerosols are emitted. It is an open question whether bioaerosols, if their microphysical effects are treated in detail with competing sources of ice also represented, can influence the climate on the global scale. The project will address this topic.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral fellow in analytical chemistry with medical and biological applications
Analytical chemistry, which is one of the fundamental chemistry subjects, is about the chemical characterisation of different samples, i.e. to determine how they are structured, what chemical compounds they contain and how much of each compound they contain. The research project “Antibiotic resistance: The role of chemical pollutants in urban wastewater” aims to describe how resistance transmission is affected by pollutants in water sources. We will collect a large number of water samples from highly polluted wastewater and relatively clean environmental water in three different countries: Bangladesh, South Africa and Sweden. The water samples will be analysed using a number of different techniques to provide a detailed description of the aquatic environment and its pollutants. We will also examine resistance transfer in these water samples. By correlating the chemical signature of the water with the results of our resistance transfer experiments, we hope to be able to identify chemical substances that stimulate the transfer of resistance genes. This research is of great importance to characterize mechanisms for the transmission of antibiotic resistance and to identify the compounds that trigger this process. This knowledge can then be used to create powerful tools to prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance, and thus tackles one of our current biggest medical challenges.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in environmental science
We are looking for a researcher for the project: Mitigating negative effects of land-use intensity in small-scale land-sparing strategies for farmland biodiversity conservation, funded by FORMAS. The research position in environmental science aims to investigate the extent to which the biodiversity conservation value of semi-natural grasslands is affected by the intensity of agricultural land use in surrounding landscapes, and if any negative impact of intensive land use is moderated by local grassland quality and/or landscape structure. In this project, we will explore this using remote sensing as a novel tool to inform conservation of mobile organism that utilize grasslands as well as also complementary resources in the surrounding landscapes.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Researcher in Neutrino Physics
We offer the opportunity for a researcher to join the conceptual design study for the ESSnuSB project funded by the European Union. The project is an international project with participants from the nuclear physics and particle physics divisions at the physics department at Lund University. The purpose of the project is to investigate the construction of a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment based on the ESS proton LINAC with relevant extensions and associated detector systems. The physics aim of the project is to provide a means to measure the CP-violating phase, δCP, of the Pontecorvo–Maki–Nakagawa–Sakata matrix, which may be of importance to explain the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The researcher will join the ongoing effort in Lund and focus on simulations and performance evaluation of the near detector suite of the ESSnuSB project. The work involves optimization of the near detector design using simulations tools such as the GENIE neutrino Monte Carlo generator, the GEANT4 toolkit and the ROOT analysis software, as well as other dedicated software used for simulation of neutrino detectors.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral fellow in landscape genomics
We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to the project “Genetic monitoring of connectivity, diversity and adaptive potential”. This project addresses the effect of fragmentation of semi-natural grasslands on pollinator genetic diversity and gene flow using landscape-genomic methods. One sub-project will address the potential for green infrastructure, i.e. the a network of natural and semi-natural habitats, to mitigate fragmentation effects on contemporary genetic diversity, building on spatially resolved land use data. A second sub-project will address to which extent fragmentation leads to loss of genetic diversity over time, taking advantage of the Lund University Biological Museum records for comparison. The project offers an excellent research environment as part of the interdisciplinary research environment Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in a Changing Climate (BECC). The project is led by Associate Senior Lecturer Anna Runemark, , and performed in collaboration with Prof. Henrik Smith, Prof. Niklas Wahlberg, Dr. Magne Friberg, Dr. Maj Rundlöf and Dr. Øystein Opedal.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post doctoral researcher in Modeling of Aerosols, Cold Clouds and Climate
The chief reason for scientific uncertainty about how much climate change will occur for a given scenario of future emissions of greenhouse gases is that clouds are especially challenging to represent in numerical models. Clouds affect the Earth’s radiation budget and changes in their properties can reinforce or offset any ongoing climate change.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website
Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.
Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
