PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Designing Anti-fragile Large-Scale Traffic Frameworks
Modeling and simulation are moving from being powerful development and analysis tools towards having increased roles in operational monitoring, control and decision support, in which models of specific entities are continually updated. However, current optimization systems are largely the result of tailored technical solutions that are difficult to scale. This project aims to infuse the concept of anti-fragility into the optimization process. Anti-fragility emerges under a volatile, random, and uncertain environment and can bring the system in a state superior to robustness – where it can gain from such an environment. Instead of designing systems to meet known requirements that will always lead to fragile systems at some degree, systems should be designed, wherever possible, to be anti-fragile, i.e. cyber-physical systems (e.g. anti-fragile predictive systems) that can learn from their experience, adapt to unforeseen events they face in their environment, and grow stronger in the face of adversity. The motivation for the proposed project is the development of an anti-fragile traffic engineering framework that is invariant to data scaling, can exploit volatility and uncertainty in the traffic dynamics, and benefit from the uncertainty inherent in such large-scale nonlinear systems. Any such solution should be robust and resilient, while respecting four main principles; adaptability, autonomic re-calibration, self-configuration and reinforced performance improvement.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Congestion-informed dynamic space allocation for different transport modes
Transport policy is currently not finding a way out of its dilemma; the imminent need to decarbonize a sector fast which has barely moved in the recent past and the social requirement to maintain and increase accessibility across all modes, but not encourage sprawl while still allowing further decreases in the generalised cost of travel by new technologies and business models. The project is based on the design idea to reallocate 50% of the existing urban road space to e-bikes. The main task is to assess what the change could achieve in terms of global accessibility, generalised costs of travel, changes in daily life and reductions in emissions and CO2, and local traffic flow performance. The project will integrate careful involvement of the various interested partners from citizens, cities, firms to interest groups.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in multiphase fluid dynamics: cavitation bioeffects
Transdermal drug delivery, i.e., delivering drugs across a patient’s skin, can be facilitated via low-frequency ultrasound via the process known as sonophoresis, or sound-mediated improved permeabilisation of the skin. This allows for larger molecules such as peptides or proteins, which would otherwise struggle to passively diffuse across the skin, to reach the blood circulation thanks to sound-induced mechanical effects. Cavitation is generally suspected to be a major mechanism allowing for the localized, transient and reversible disruption of the outermost layer of the skin which typically represents the most difficult layer to penetrate. However, the exact contribution of cavitation and the distinct cavitation effects such as localised jetting and acoustic emissions in the process are currently unknown. This project aims at comprehensively quantifying and decoupling these physical effects in media relevant for transdermal drug delivery, such as polymer solutions and ionic liquids. The research addresses fundamental open questions in acoustic and cavitation properties of complex fluids and the associated physics, and systematically investigates cavitation effects involved in the acoustically mediated surface perforation through unique temporally and spatially resolved experiments at the micro-scale, coupled with theoretical and numerical modelling. The research leverages an international and interdisciplinary collaboration with biomaterials engineers with an expertise on skin biomechanics.

PhD position summary/title: NRP79 PhD Position in Microengineered Human Organoid-on-Chip Models to Study the Molecular Pathology of Rare Bone Disease
The aim of this National Research Program (NRP) 79 (www.nfp79.ch/en/) research is to develop a novel human organoid-on-chip tool to study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of rare bone disease in the laboratory, with the goal of replacing a high number of animal experiments to advance 3R strategies (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement). In collaboration with our clinical partners at the Children’s Hospital Zurich (KISPI) and microfluidic specialists at ETH Zurich and industry, we employ patient-derived cells to grow a bone organoid on chip to investigate the properties of the extracellular matrix deposited during the process of bone formation using state-of-the-art organs-on-chip, molecular bioimaging and single-cell analysis techniques (e.g., collagen and live-cell imaging, scRNA-seq, flow cytometry, proteomics). Recently, several epithelial organoid systems resembling human tissues (e.g., intestine, optical cup, kidney) have been established. Yet, there is still very limited progress in developing organoid models for human musculoskeletal tissues such as bone. A major challenge is reconstructing the native bone microenvironment which is structurally and functionally complex. Currently, our laboratory leverages interdisciplinary advances in tissue engineering and microtechnologies to generate microengineered bone organoid models for both fundamental and translational research in medicine.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position on the evolution of the AI business ecosystem
We build on the tradition of research that looks at technologies as large socio-technical systems of interconnected components, whose evolution depends on both deliberate choice and emergent properties. The project will look at the interplay of the different technical, business and social components of the AI ecosystem to identify bottlenecks, incentives, opportunities for growth and frictions that prevent implementation. In so doing, the project intends to be very mindful of the social implications of digital technologies: the rise of new technologies, at least in the short term, always generates costs and benefits, winners and losers. One of the overarching aims of the project is the identification of the technical bottlenecks (e.g. access to data, interoperability between Cloud and Edge technologies) which needs addressing, and the analysis of how different solutions to the same bottleneck might imply a different distribution of costs and benefits.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing
The research focuses on the exploration of bistatic radar signals for applications in natural environments. Nowadays more and more radar satellites will be operating in the bistatic mode, where an incidence angle between the transmission and reception component of a sensor exists and therefore due to the different looking direction a particular signal is received. The particular signal is different depending on the illuminated surface and needs to be interpreted. The interpretation is done using object-oriented models describing in a generalised way the natural scene. However, today the understanding of the bistatic signal and the development of models for their interpretation is in the beginning of the research and an up to date topic for exploration. A ground-based system, KAPRI, is available that will provide insights into the signals and can be used for validation of the model. In addition, the interpretation of data acquired by a polarimetric bistatic system for natural media (e.g. snow, ice, crop, vegetation) is the topic of research and holds potential for further exploration. The objective of the position is to perform research of bistatic radar signals in natural environments. For this process further technical development of the KAPRI system is probably required. The expected start of the position is in Autumn/Winter 2022.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in data and process analysis to enable the digitalized integrated planning of interventions on road sections comprised of assets of multiple types
The future of national roads is one where both human driven and automated vehicles travel seamlessly from their origins to their destinations. Potential disruptions to unhindered travel will be foreseen with the extensive use of surveillance technologies, and either prevented through the implementation of detailed action plans or their consequences eliminated with the seamless rerouting of vehicles along alternate routes to avoid traffic jams with as little as possible lost travel time. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Lower-Field Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging
The project is based on previous and ongoing work of the group demonstrating benefits of ramping down high-performance clinical MR systems to lower static magnetic field strengths. In conjunction with advanced MR pulse sequence design and image reconstruction approaches, excellent image quality is achievable. Moreover, given the lower static field, options to stacked and concurrent imaging of electric and magnetic sources in the heart become possible. To this end, data for deep inference and digital twinning of the heart can be obtained.
