We are looking for a statistical geneticist with experience in large scale analyses of genomic data to work on a post funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) that aims are harness the use, integration and interpretation of large or high dimensional genetic and genomic datasets to investigate multi-morbidity. This post focuses on developing of mathematical models to analyse population-wide genetic and environmental factors linked to multimorbid clusters and to identify causal paths of disease progression and aggregation.

The Roslin Institute (Edinburgh) has been awarded an Impact Acceleration Award (IAA) with a global plant breeding company to further develop stability metrics for crop breeding programmes. We seek an independent and motivated Research Associate to drive this impactful project. The post-holder will conduct research and implementation of quantitative genetics, biometrics and breeding with a focus on state-of-the-art statistical models and tools for improving and developing more stable crop genotypes.

The Roslin Institute is a world-class centre for research on the quantitative genetics of populations, particularly in livestock, companion animals, aquaculture, forests, and crops.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week). The post-holder will work closely with Daniel Tolhurst and supported by Prof Gregor Gorjanc in the Highlander lab of The Roslin Institute (Quantitative Biology division) on the Easter Bush Campus in Edinburgh.

You will develop and implement experiment(s) examining psycho-physiological responses to migration narratives in the EU, through original research, experimental design, implementation, and analysis and by collaborating with the Principal Investigator and the NRlabs team on other project-related tasks and activities.

We recently found that many Helix-Turn-Helix domain transcription factors (HTH-TFs) from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus also globally bind RNA in vivo. Some HTH-TFs have well-established transcriptional roles in regulating MRSA infectivity and antibiotic resistance. Moreover, the transcription activity of numerous HTH-TFs can be controlled by small molecules, making them promising targets for developing novel antimicrobials. 

Our data indicate that the regulatory impact of HTH-TFs is much more profound than anticipated, underscoring the need for a thorough characterisation of these proteins. We hypothesise that HTH-TFs post-transcriptionally control a substantial fraction of antibiotic resistance and virulence factors by altering the stability/translation of RNA substrates. RNA may also compete with HTH-TF transcriptional activities. 

By integrating state-of-the-art biochemical, structural, and phenotypic approaches, you will obtain detailed mechanistic insights into (i) how key HTH-TFs bind both DNA and RNA molecules, (ii) how small molecule effectors control this activity, and (iii) how these RNA-binding activities impact gene expression during host infection. A detailed understanding of MRSA HTH-TF function and how its nucleic acid binding is regulated may underpin future therapeutic approaches.

The researcher will have the opportunity to contribute to the design and implementation of advanced machine learning and data science and statistical methods, including, Mendelian randomisation, latent class analysis, time series analysis, and structural equation modelling in the UKRI Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry. This role is highly collaborative, involving engagement with co-investigators, collaborators and partners to ensure delivery of the Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry’s multidisciplinary programme of work and open science platform. The post-holder will interact with researchers from various disciplines at the University of Edinburgh, Kings College London, University of Bristol, University of Exeter, and other project partners.  

The University of Edinburgh (UofE) and Roslin Technologies Limited (RT) have been awarded a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to create cultivated meat product prototypes (pâté and haggis) from animal pluripotent stem cells. This innovative project will combine the Liver Tissue Development and Engineering expertise of the Dave Hay Research Group | The University of Edinburgh with Roslin Technologies’ expertise in applying new biotechnologies to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable food system. We are seeking an independent and motivated KTP Associate with cell biology, tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, or a closely related experience to drive this ambitious project. The homogenous and scalable production of liver cells (hepatocytes) from human pluripotent stem cells is well established in the Hay group as are the required in vitro techniques for cell phenotyping. The Associate will be trained in cellular differentiation at the UoE and translate this knowledge to RT for animal stem cell differentiation. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher with interest and experience in analysing genomic and/or longitudinal mental health data. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious post-doctoral scientist to work within a field- leading team and contribute to knowledge on the genomic (genetic and epigenetic) and phenotypic foundations of depression. We are looking for two Postdoctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) in Theoretical/Computational Soft Matter and Fluid Dynamics to work with Prof Halim Kusumaatmaja in the Institute for Multiscale Thermofluids, School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. 

The group is interested in a wide range of phenomena concerning the complex behaviours of liquid droplets interacting with soft, patterned, an/or structured substrates. Depending on the interests of the candidates, they can contribute towards (i) the development of analytical and numerical techniques for modelling wetting phenomena and  interfacial flows (including multi-physics coupling to phase change, solid elasticity, etc); (ii) understanding flow dynamics of droplets on liquid repellent surfaces (e.g., on superhydrophobic, liquid infused, and other liquid-like surfaces); and/or (iii) understanding biological or biologically inspired wetting and interfacial phenomena (e.g., the interaction of biomolecular condensates with lipid membranes and cytoskeletal filaments).

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Atomistic and Micromagnetic simulations of advanced magnetic compounds for the next generation of information technologies (e.g., hard drives, memories, etc.).

The position will be located at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Edinburgh in the group of Dr Elton Santos. The group is an active member of the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics developing several activities in the context of two-dimensional (2D) materials, energy compounds and strongly correlated approaches. The University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for a position of a postdoctoral research associate in experimental nuclear physics. 

As part of this PDRA opportunity, you will join the group’s work at the international research facilities GSI/FAIR, Germany, and TRIUMF, Canada and play a key role in pursuing new & creative ion trapping techniques to address isotopes at the limits of nuclear binding. 

Studies of such exotic nuclei reveal new phenomena, provide an insight into evolution of nuclear structure far from stability, allow stringent tests of nuclear models, and yield critical inputs for modelling explosive nuclear astrophysical phenomena e.g. the rapid neutron capture process (r-process) where there is a strong link between nuclear shell closures and shapes far from stability and resulting abundances. Unveiling the properties and structure of those exotic systems is key to completing our understanding of the nucleus and its internal forces. The successful candidate will support and further develop ion trapping techniques, in particular for high precision mass measurements and analyses of radioactive isotopes and molecules in line with the groups UKRI STFC Consolidated Grant research program.
