Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate – Interdisciplinary Systematic Review: mechanistic evidence and epistemic justice (Philosophy of Scientific Method and Philosophy of Causality)
The project is on the methodology of causal evaluation. When evaluating whether an intervention works, orthodox ‘evidence-based’ evaluation methods review certain kinds of studies (especially randomised trials) but exclude other relevant evidence (such as mechanistic studies and views of stakeholders). This project will apply an emerging philosophical theory of causal enquiry, Evidential Pluralism, to provide systematic foundations for a broader approach to evidence review—one that includes a diverse range of evidence from across disciplines. This approach promises better informed and more inclusive evaluations. A new review of the effectiveness of face-mask mandates will help to test the approach.
Working under the guidance of the P.I. and co-leaders Trish Greenhalgh (Oxford) and Rebecca Helm (Exeter), you will have responsibility for (i) developing new methods for systematically reviewing evidence of the effectiveness of interventions; (ii) carrying out a review of the effectiveness of face-mask mandates for controlling respiratory infections to test the new methods; and (iii) assessing the extent to which the new methods mitigate specific epistemological and ethical objections to orthodox systematic review methods. You will also help to ensure that the new methods inform evaluation practice outside academia.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Biological Chemistry (Manchester Institute of Biotechnology)
A position is available for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in directed evolution, biocatalysis, biochemistry or a related discipline. The aim of the research is to develop and optimize biocatalytic approaches to single guide RNAs (sgRNAs) that have applications in CRISPR based gene therapy.
CRISPR-based therapeutics are emerging as a promising new drug modality for the treatment of a range of disease areas including cancers, genetic disorders and viral infections. Here a single guide RNA (sgRNA) directs the CRISPR/Cas9 complex to the target gene which is subsequently edited. sgRNAs are currently produced using solid phase phosphoramidite chemistry involving iterative cycles of coupling, capping, oxidation and deprotection to achieve stepwise extension of RNA sequences immobilized on solid supports. Given that sgRNAs are typically 100-150 nucleotides long and impurities are introduced during each nucleotide extension, target sequences are produced in very low yields and require complex HPLC purifications. To synthesize sgRNAs in the high volumes and high purities needed for therapeutic applications, more efficient synthetic methods are required. The Lovelock group are interested in the development of biocatalytic strategies to produce long oligonucleotide sequences. This research involves process optimization, scale up and optimization of biocatalyst properties using directed evolution to make them suitable for pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the cutting edge of enzyme engineering and nucleic acid therapeutics research and the successful applicants will have full access to state-of-the-art facilities for reaction scale-up and high-throughput automated enzyme engineering, including liquid handling robots, colony pickers and a suite of high throughput analytical facilities. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to apply and further develop their expertise in both fundamental and translational science, which are highly relevant to a future career in the pharmaceutical and wider chemical industry.
Applicants should have, or are expect to attain a PhD or equivalent, in Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biocatalysis, and have a thesis submitted prior to taking up the position. You should be capable of working under your own initiative but also collaborating with industrial and academic research partners, so excellent communication and organisational skills are required.

The University of Manchester is a red brick university, a product of the civic university movement of the late 19th century.
The main campus is south of Manchester city centre on Oxford Road. The university owns and operates major cultural assets such as the Manchester Museum, Whitworth Art Gallery, John Rylands Library and Jodrell Bank Observatory—a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The university had a consolidated income of £1.1 billion in 2019–20, of which £264.7 million was from research grants and contracts (6th place nationally behind Oxford, UCL, Cambridge, Imperial and Edinburgh). It has the fifth-largest endowment of any university in the UK, after the universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh and King’s College London. It is a member of the worldwide Universities Research Association, the Russell Group of British research universities and the N8 Group.
The University of Manchester has 25 Nobel laureates among its past and present students and staff, the fourth-highest number of any single university in the United Kingdom.
