PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Scientific Computing focusing on multiscale numerical computations of mechanical metamaterials

The PhD position offered is connected to a project grant to Dr. Doghonay Arjmand. The primary aim of the project is to develop and analyse novel multiscale models and methods for simulations of seismic metamaterials. The mathematical theory is closely related to numerical homogenization problems. The governing equations are essentially elastic wave equations with rapidly varying and high contrast data. The effect of these small scale features on the overall macroscopic behavior need to be modelled within a multiscale formalism.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Prokaryotic Microbiology

Recent large-scale studies have identified thousands of previously unknown small proteins encoded by a large variety of bacterial species, indicating that the full extent of protein-coding genes has been greatly underestimated. Generally, the impact of such small proteins on bacterial physiology and pathogenicity is so far unknown. Within the PhD project we aim to gain a detailed understanding of how small proteins impact three important aspects of bacterial life; growth, gene regulation, and host cell infection. The main model organism used for these studies is the pathogenic bacterium Salmonella Typhimurium, which infects a wide range of animals, including humans. The methods applied within this PhD project include high-throughput sequencing of RNA, flow cytometry, as well as other molecular and microbiological techniques.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Eukaryotic Microbiology – RNA biology

Small non-coding (nc)RNAs are involved in numerous biological processes, commonly by regulating gene expression. For example, it has been estimated that the majority of human genes is regulated by a particular class of ncRNAs – micro (mi)RNAs. Important questions in biology are how and when miRNAs and other ncRNAs evolved. The observation that organism complexity correlates with the number of genes for ncRNAs has led to the hypothesis that ncRNAs is a driving force for the evolution of multicellularity. Within the PhD project, we will study how miRNAs and other ncRNAs, and their associated proteins, influence the evolution of multicellularity. For these studies we will use organisms with facultative multicellularity, i.e. organisms that can alter between uni- and multicellular life styles. For functional studies, we will mainly use the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum as a model organism. The project will include different molecular, genetic, and bioinformatic methods such as large-scale sequencing of RNA, fluorescent microscopy, and gene knock-outs.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Diamond Semiconductor Physics

The attractive material properties of diamond such as high band gap, high carrier mobilities, high thermal conductivity, high breakdown field strength, radiation hardness, etc., make it a very interesting semiconductor material. Recently, diamond has received great attention for applications in spintronics and valleytronics. This is because of the unique quantum mechanical properties of diamond, as well as the presence of defects, e.g. the N-V center, with extremely long spin coherence time. Specially, understanding the nature of the color-centers (impurities such as N-V, Si-V, Sn-V etc.) in diamond requires further investigation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Conservation Genomics and Immunogenetics

Climate change is predicted to increase temperatures worldwide and increase climatic instability. This will significantly impact infectious disease dynamics, altering pathogen distribution and disease intensity. Ectotherms are particularly susceptible to thermal changes, as they are dependent on the ambient environment to regulate their physiological processes, including the immune response. This PhD position will investigate how climate warming will impact immunocompetence in the sand lizard (Lacerta agilis), a vulnerable, temperate species in Sweden. It will integrate experimental biology with genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics, applying population genetics and genome-wide association approaches. The selected candidate will mainly engage in large-scale population genomics and quantitative genetics analyses that require solid bioinformatics skills. The candidate will also conduct field work, immune challenge experiments and molecular lab work to produce additional datasets. Additional duties include active participation in the research group activities, training of junior group members in relevant techniques and engagement in collaborative projects.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student position in environmental law with an interdisciplinary focus

The doctoral student position takes place within VR-funded research environment 2020-04973 which proposes to combine law and conservation to help develop solutions to the biodiversity crisis. Most of the world’s nations have enacted environmental legal instruments to avert species extinctions. However, these legal instruments do not appear to be able to stop that crisis. Countries are consistently failing to meet agreed targets to reduce the loss of biodiversity. This failure raises the question of whether existing legal instruments, theories and methods are fit for the purpose of protecting species, populations and ecosystems and whether and how their effectiveness can be improved. The purpose of our research is therefore to develop a theoretical and applied understanding of the interplay between legal and ecological systems and document, analyze, model and improve our understanding of how law and conservation affect each other, with the goal of improving the ability of the law to conserve species. The legal topics that will be addressed in this research environment include ecological tort (“préjudice écologique”), public interest environmental litigation, rights of nature, and environmental constitutionalism.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website

Uppsala University  is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.

The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.

Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.

Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
