PhD position summary/title: PhD position in germline stem cell development and fertility
The main tasks for a doctoral student are to devote themselves to their doctoral education and therefore you will be both accepted as a student and an employee at Lund University.
The project focuses on the role on the glycans and glycan binding proteins in regulating germline stem cell development and fertility. The project employs both in vitro and in vivo models. Our goal is to identify how protein bound and free carbohydrate chains are their interactors control stem cell fate and fertility. To decipher the basic signalling, we employ Caenorhabditis elegans, an invertebrate with highly conserved signalling in germline stem cells. We use 2D and 3D cell culture models for application-level studies. The duties of the applicant include planning and performing the experiments in the lab. The PhD student will have to collect data and participate in discussions with members of the lab. The project will involve learning novel biochemical, genetic, and gene modification tools such as CRISPR/Cas9, confocal microscopy and bioinformatics.

The doctoral project, forming part of the research project described above, will have its final design determined in collaboration with the project leaders. Nevertheless, the doctoral student will have great opportunities to influence the final design of the studies. In the final part of the doctoral studies, the doctoral student is expected to independently develop their research ideas. Applicants are required to submit a research plan that includes potential ideas and prospective studies related to current research on episodic memory and gaze behaviour.
The PhD student is expected to take an active role in all stages of the research project. The PhD student will be responsible for preparing stimulus materials, designing and programming experiments, collecting and analysing behavioural, eye-tracking and EEG data, and reporting and presenting the findings at scientific meetings and in scientific journals.
The doctoral project will be conducted within the Lund Memory Lab, in collaboration with other members of the research team. The team specializes in high temporal resolution techniques, combining behavioural testing with concurrent EEG and eye tracking measures, further enhanced by state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. The position is located at the Division of Heat Transfer at the Department of Energy Sciences. A key strategy involves submerging forward and/or hydrophobic pervaporation membranes directly into the fermenter to facilitate continuous fermentation and enhance the concentration of biofuels/biochemicals. Additionally, inducing vibrations in the membrane bioreactor mitigates fouling on the membrane surface, ensuring sustained effectiveness. The optimization of biofuel production processes aims to achieve maximum yield while minimizing energy demands for subsequent rectification processes. The downstream processing is optimized by consolidating insoluble material removal, product isolation, purification, and pre-concentration into only two operational units, thereby increasing overall efficiency. The project also includes techno-economic benchmarking to compare the sustainability and energy demand of the novel hybrid downstream processing concept with current biobutanol and bioethanol production processes, using different substrates as reference points. Anticipated outcomes include the development of an efficient downstream processing concept using biobutanol as a reference system, overcoming current biorefinery challenges, and supporting the potential electrification of biorefinery processing.

We are hiring two doctoral students for two different projects:
1) “Synthesizing Second-Life Batteries: A Heterogeneous Control Approach” funded by the Swedish government COMPEL – COMPetence for the ELectrification of the transport system.
Background: Batteries are central to supporting the renewable energy transition. However, there is a significant environmental and financial cost associated with the production of new batteries. The potential of repurposing retired batteries from various applications, such as electric vehicles, for use in areas like grid support, presents a unique and sustainable avenue to reduce these impacts and accelerate the use of batteries. This project aims to explore the feasibility of assembling used batteries, no longer fit for their original purpose, to create ‘new’ batteries that can provide robust grid support. The basic idea is to connect many smaller, retired batteries to create a larger, heterogeneous battery. By exploiting advanced control theoretic techniques developed for interconnected heterogeneous systems, methods will be developed to quantify the capabilities and capacities of this hybrid battery, optimizing them for the new application domain.
2) “Scalable Optimization for Learning in Control” funded by ELLIIT, a strategic research area for IT and mobile communication.
Background: Large-scale engineering applications put new demands on control theory, as most existing methods for analysis, design and verification do not scale well with increasing complexity. Furthermore, new powerful algorithms for machine learning are increasingly being used for control engineering purposes, further adding to the complexity of analysis and verification. To counteract this, there is a strong demand for scalable algorithms and corresponding information interfaces. Important applications areas are networks for energy, transportation and communications. The purpose of the proposed project is to address the complexity challenges by developing and exploiting new algorithms suitable for distributed implementation.

This call recognises that the world is going through a crisis of unprecedented global scale engendered by a dominant regime that has resulted in deepening inequalities, increasing deprivation in old and new forms, the destruction of ecosystems, catastrophic climate change, ruptures in socio-cultural fabrics, and the violent dispossession of living beings.
However, there is an increasing emergence and visibility of an immense variety of radical alternatives to this dominant regime, contesting its roots in capitalist, patriarchal, racist, statist, and anthropocentric forces. We are seeking doctoral candidates who are interested in researching the broad question: What does anti-colonial/capitalist/patriarchal transformation look like and how are human-nature relations being reconfigured to support this?
Communal alternatives ‘from below,’ while different in scale and reach, constitute multiple forms of resistance and struggles for re-existence revealing other horizons of the possible – a world where many worlds fit. These include initiatives with a specific focus like sustainable and holistic agriculture, community led water/energy/food sovereignty, solidarity and sharing economies, worker control of production facilities, resource/knowledge commons, and inter-ethnic peace and harmony, to more holistic or rounded transformations such as those being attempted by the Zapatista in Chiapas and the Kurds in Rojava. Alternatives also include the revival of ancient traditions and the emergence of new worldviews that re-establish humanity’s place within nature, as a basis for human dignity and equality.

The overall goal of the PhD project is to better understand how the environment affects genetic and phenotypic variation, and how these insights can be used to improve predictions of evolution.
Evolutionary change happens constantly all around us. This contemporary evolution can allow populations to adapt and persist, or contribute to their decline and extinction. Which of the two it will be is often unclear because current methods to predict microevolution work poorly in natural populations. Considering the global environmental crisis, this is particularly alarming. A key cause of the predictive inaccuracy is environmental variation.
This PhD project will investigate environmental effects on additive genetic (co)variances, narrow-sense heritabilities, and evolvabilities. Additionally, as resource availability is a crucial aspect of the environment in many species, it will evaluate to what extent including information on individual resource accrual can reduce environmental bias. The project will combine quantitative genetic experiments in a newly established, state-of-the-art fish research laboratory with analyses of long-term field data, using the well-known Trinidadian guppy system. The successful candidate will have a keen interest in evolutionary biology, quantitative genetics, or related fields. A curious mind, a sense of responsibility, and excellent organisational skills are strong additional merits for the position.

Physical Chemistry involves research relating to molecular issues. The experimental and theoretical methods used often originate from physics. The major theme of this PhD project is to test key hypotheses in life history, telomere ecology and ageing research, using a songbird as study system. The aims are to conduct detailed studies of key life stages, such as early-life and annual events (breeding investments, migration costs (efforts and infections)), to investigate how these will affect body maintenance (e.g., telomere shortening/elongation) and ultimately ageing and fitness. Key questions are, for example: Can moderate costs (e.g., accrued from migration and breeding efforts) induce ‘scars’ that remain ‘hidden’ but accumulate over life eventually causing severe problems reducing lifespan and fitness? Are early-life conditions crucial in setting out the foundation for these processes and the pace of life?
The PhD student will generate new and work with already collected samples and data in the 40 years long-term study system of the great reed warblers (GRW) of Lake Kvismaren. In Lund, the daily work will involve analysing samples in the DNA lab (DNA extraction, qPCR to measure telomere length, multiplex PCR to measure malaria infection) and using statistical tools to analyse large long-term data sets. Each year, there will also be several months of intense fieldwork at Lake Kvismaren, in Närke (southern Central Sweden), involving daily observations of all singing and breeding GRW, finding all nests, collect blood samples from all adults and their nestlings, and gathering data of breeding performance and survival of all individuals. Hence, the project is an excellent opportunity to learn both wet (DNA) lab techniques, statistical methods, and fieldwork techniques.

The goal of the PhD project is to provide an in-depth comparative investigation of the migratory phenotype in songbird species with focus on behavioural adaptations, cognitive traits and physiology. Fundamental differences in the migratory program include diel activity schedules, the use of natural sensory cues for orientation and navigation, and the exchange of information with conspecifics. The outcome of the project will fill critical gaps in animal migration theory, clarifying which role inherited information, learning, and sociality, play in shaping the phenotypic variation of migratory strategies present in songbirds.
The project includes behavioural studies of captive migratory songbirds in a state-of-the-art experimental facility with computer-controlled cues manipulation to simulate virtual landscapes and a multi-sensory array system to monitor and reveal unique characteristics of the behavioural phenotype of target species. The experimental work entails extracting behavioural information from video and audio datasets developing modern artificial intelligence algorithms. In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to implement sensors calibration and human-machine interface software for a novel custom battery-powered data acquisition platform for studying animal orientation in the field.
This is a highly cross-disciplinary project in tight collaboration with the Faculty of Mathematics, LTH at Lund University and it is part of the LU Profile Area: Natural and Artificial Cognition (NAC) and the eSSENCE national research programme for e-Science and advanced digital technology. Cooperation with tech companies is to be expected. The project is suitable for candidates with a strong technical background and an interest in computational biology, animal behaviour and migration. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in geophysics
A doctoral student position in Geobiosphere Science is hereby announced at the Department of Geology, Lund University (LU), Sweden. The PhD position will be part of the ERC project “Core dynamics on millennial timescales (PALEOCORE)”. In this project we will use new models of how Earth’s magnetic field has varied through time, based on geological and archeological data, to study ancient analogues of the present-day geomagnetic field and reveal the underlying processes within the (hidden) liquid core of our planet. Age uncertainties of paleo-data are one of the main challenges with this project and a fundamental challenge for paleo-reconstructions in general. To overcome the issue, we will use novel modelling techniques whereby the slowly varying morphology of the geomagnetic field, which we are trying to recover, is simultaneously used to synchronize the different datasets in time. The methods and results from this project will not only be of benefit for our understanding of the geomagnetic field but will also provide important geochronological constraints that are necessary to study, for example, leads and lags in paleoclimate.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Electrical Engineering focusing on Nanotechnology for AI
The focus of this project is nanoelectronics for artificial intelligence (AI). AI is a key technology for the transition to a carbon-neutral society but relies on powerful computing hardware which high energy consumption is itself a difficult obstacle on the road to sustainable AI. Inspired by the brain, neuromorphic hardware promises up to 1,000 times more energy-efficient computing by interweaving computation with data storage. The key to this breakthrough technology is new types of nanoelectronic memory devices that still need a lot of research.

Lund University is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.
The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
