The positions are part of the ERC-funded research project on ‘Bordering Europe: Boundary Formation in European integration (EUROBORD)’ directed by Prof. Frank Schimmelfennig. The main objective of this research project lies in developing high-fidelity computational models of Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) AM to generate insight into a fundamental understanding of the physics of the process. To that end, we seek a motivated a PhD candidate who can support further developments of our in-house software tool for multiphysics modeling of PBF AM processes. More specifically, you will be working on our existing C++ code, which employs state-of-the-art meshfree methods for the simulation of melt-pool dynamics, heat transfer, fluid-solid interactions, as well as microstructure evolution and residual stresses.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Numerical Modeling of the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of Multi-Material 3D Structures.
Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), also referred to as Field Assisted Sintering Technique (FAST), is sintering process that uses Joule heating and pressure. In our lab, we focus on sintering of multi-material parts. Modeling and simulation of this process is a complex task for which a coupled electric-thermal-mechanical field problem needs to be solved. Within the numerical simulation framework of SPS, one of the main complexities stems from the electrical, thermal, and mechanical behavior of the materials and interfaces at different time-length scales that significantly influences the choice of constitutive modeling approaches. The ultimate goal of this project is to address these issues and provide a new mechanism for the design and optimization of SPS/FAST processes. To accomplish this challenging task, we seek a highly motivated PhD candidate who will support us in developing new and extending available models to simulate the multi-material SPS process.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position: FishPath – Turbulent eddies to create paths for safe downstream migration for salmonids and eel past hydropower intakes.
The FishPath project aims at developing cost-effective measures for safe downstream passage for important fish species at hydropower structures. The novel idea is that knowledge on fish behavioural responses to turbulent eddies can be used to develop guidance systems that create alternative migration pathways for fish around hydropower plants and other water intakes. To this end, the project investigates interactions between fish and turbulent eddies created by innovative elements at small-to-large scales, develops turbulent Eddies-based behavioural fish Guidance Systems (EGS) based on a combination of such elements and finally provides a manual for cost-effective design, implementation and maintenance of EGS for safe downstream fish passage at intakes. The target fish species are Atlantic salmon, trout and European eel.

This doctoral research study funded by the SNF (Swiss National Science Foundation) comprises a comparative approach and includes bovine and roe deer as model species. We will characterize the molecular patterns during embryo development, translate previously described dormancy markers established in somatic cells to embryonic stem cells as a screening system, and elucidate the impact of dormancy inducing factors on cell cycle progression. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Experimental Cloud Physics on ice crystal growth induced by seeding.
The PhD project is part of the newly funded ERC project CloudLab that includes three PhDs and 2 PostDocs. Within CloudLab, ice nucleating particles from a drone will be injected into supercooled stratus clouds to investigate microphysical changes, including fundamental aspects of ice formation and growth. The project combines a multi-dimensional approach of targeted cloud seeding with a focus on wintertime stratus clouds in Switzerland. The microphysical changes induced by the seeding will be measured in-situ with a tethered balloon system and using ground-based remote sensing instrumentation. The analysis of the cloud seeding events will be used to validate and improve the cloud microphysics scheme in the Swiss weather forecast model and ultimately precipitation forecasts.

This PhD student will develop a digital matchmaking service for AEC stakeholders, building projects, and materials in order to increase the uptake of circular economy principles in design decisions for the built environment on a large scale, globally. To do so, digital innovations from other sectors will be applied to the AEC sector in order to augment the skills of AEC players, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms and blockchain technologies. The core idea is to connect the end-of-life of buildings with the start-of-life of other buildings by making the reuse of building materials more effective, user-friendly and wide-spread. This PhD student will develop a digital inventory-making method for AEC stakeholders in order to scan existing buildings prior to their demolition and identify, locate, and sort building materials. Image-driven data intelligence will be used to inventory materials available for reuse. The aim of the PhD project is to investigate the physics of multiferroic and/or strongly correlated material systems in the quest for new and existing ordering and coupling phenomena at the nanoscale with the aid of a low-temperature scanning probe microscope (SPM). Domain formation on the sub-micrometer scale and the magnetoelectric coupling between ferroic domains and domain walls are of particular interest. For these investigations the Laboratory owns a working low-temperature SPM (attocube), complemented by a rich infrastructure of room-temperature SPMs, lasers, and thin-film sample-growth facilities.

Within this framework, CCUS supply chains are fundamental to achieve net-zero emissions in “hard-to-decarbonize” industrial sectors. However, the potential of CCUS supply chains can be unlocked by designing a cost-competitive and reliable CO2 network that connects the emission sites with the storage and the utilization sites. The design of such infrastructure is a complex problem due to several factors, such as the scale of the system, the technologies involved, and the uncertainty associated with the system’s future evolution

In light of the Paris Agreement of 2015, several countries recently committed to reaching carbon neutrality within a few decades, e.g. by 2050 in the case of Switzerland. In addition to ambitious action for emission reduction, reaching this goal will likely require negative emission technologies, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU). However, major hurdles for their deployment remain, and the feasibility of industrial-sized CCS/CCU applications remains contested. From a policy point of view, especially the economic and political feasibility need to be considered, given the immense financing needs and acceptance challenges of CCS/CCU.
