You will be part of an excellent research centre at one of the top European universities, with a vibrant extended biomedical research environment in the ‘Medicon Valley’. Selected candidates will join one of BRIC’s research groups, to work with an original project addressing ambitious research questions in biomedicine.

A postdoctoral position is available in the group of Jan Żylicz at reNEW. The team studies fundamental mechanisms of early mammalian development and stem cell biology. The Żylicz group wants to understand how metabolic and epigenetic mechanisms cooperate to regulate transcription during early development. In particular the team is interested in how metabolism regulates histone modifiers, and how these in turn affect lineage choice and embryo growth at around the time of implantation. To achieve this, the group utilizes both in vivo mouse models as well as in vitro human stem cell culture systems and state-of the-art ultrasensitive transcriptomic, epigenomic and metabolomic techniques. This project will combine these methods with biochemical and mechanistic analysis. The posting is for 2 years and the starting date is the 1 December 2023, or upon agreement with the chosen candidate.

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc with expertise in genome engineering to redesign RNA-guided transposition systems. This is a 3-year position with start 1 December 2023, or after agreement. The successful candidate will work at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR) in the Structural Molecular Biology research group headed by Prof. Guillermo Montoya. The position is financed through the ERC Advanced Grant ERC_AdG_101096548 INTETOOLS.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher specializing in evolutionary, ecological and/or environmental genomics to join the Racimo group in the Section for Molecular Ecology and Evolution at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen. The position is funded by the ERC and is limited to 2.5 years, commencing 1 December 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will work on the project “Comorbidity networks of mental disorders and general medical conditions” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Psychology (UCPH), the Copenhagen Research Centre for Biological and Precision Psychiatry (Mental Health Centre Copenhagen), and the Department of Clinical Psychology (University of Leiden). The research group combines expertise within psychology, psychiatry, medicine and statistics. In this project, we aim to uncover network structures of mental disorders and general medical conditions. Specifically, we will study how a broad range of mental disorders and medical conditions co-occur, and how temporal associations between mental disorders and medical conditions can be modelled in complex network structures. Further, we aim to test the possibility of using information from the comorbidity network structures to predict adverse outcomes and mortality. The project is based on extensive data on mental disorders and medical conditions from the Danish registries including the entire Danish population.

The project will be decided in consultation with the successful candidate and adjusted to their interests but may involve the use of functional genetic screens and proteomic approaches to identify and characterize new factors in cellular stress responses and gene expression regulation. We utilize a versatile and streamlined genetic screening pipeline based on fluorescence activated cell-sorting (FACS) and ultra-deep mutagenesis in human cells (Haahr et al., Science 2022) to gain unbiased insights into how regulation of cell signaling and gene expression changes in cellular stress responses and how it determines cell fate. Using systematic screens for quantitative molecular readouts we can generate comprehensive roadmaps of the factors regulating our phenotype of interest. Where relevant, genetic screening approaches will be complemented by mass-spectrometry-based proteomic analysis. The biological functions and mechanistic basis of screen findings will be investigated by means of a wide range of approaches within cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, and imaging approaches. The successful candidate will also have an opportunity to take part in development and implementation of new functional genomic tools to dissect multiple aspects of cell biology.

The postdoctoral position is part of the research project “Divergent Views of Diaspora in Ancient Judaism” (2022-2026), funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and its Sapere Aude programme. Applying newly developed theory from migration and diaspora studies, the project investigates the earliest stage of the Jewish diaspora (597-331 BCE). A great variety of imaginative reflections in biblical texts and basic information in historical records suggests that there were a number of different attitudes to living abroad. A key goal of the project is to identity and map all textual depictions in the Hebrew Bible (Ezra-Nehemiah, prophetic texts, diaspora stories) along with archival sources from Egypt (the Elephantine Papyri) and Babylonia (e.g. the Al-Yahudu documents). Four sub-projects focus on distinct, yet interrelated topics: Generational consciousness abroad; the issue of return; interaction with host authorities; and religious identity and practices in new cultural contexts.

The Department of Food and Resource Economics (IFRO) at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a two-year postdoc position from the 1st November 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The postdoc should work in the field of philosophy of science with a focus on understanding practices within natural and medical sciences and applied social science. There should be special focus on norms and practices relating to research integrity.

The overall goal of the project is to develop a new family of language models that can process any written language by rendering text as images, which allows the models to learn from the visual similarities between written languages. Realizing this goal includes creating and implementing tokenization-free multilingual language models, the collection and curation of visually diverse language data, the training of small-scale and large-scale models, developing techniques for effective model quantization and compression, and creating models that jointly process natural images and rendered text using a single interface. The position is funded by a VILLUM Young Investigator Grant held by the principal investigator, Desmond Elliott. The project team includes the principal investigator, a postdoctoral researcher, and two Ph.D students, as well as external collaborators.

You will be part of the interdisciplinary research group Cognition, Intention and Action (CoInAct) at the Department of Psychology. The overall purpose of the CoInAct group is to understand the interplay between movement, actions and cognition. We study basic action neuroscience and higher order cognitive functions in humans. CoInAct brings together researchers from different disciplines – including philosophy, psychology and human neuroscience – with a common interest in understanding human cognition and action. In general, we aim to improve understanding of the psychological, philosophical and neural foundations of human cognition, action, and movement, and to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and students interested in these research areas.

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral fellowship in the field of computational fluid and solid mechanics. The fellowship will start on 15 November 2023, or as soon as possible after and is open for two years. The fellowship will focus on reactive transport and flow in porous media and will be part of the ESS (European Spallation Source) lighthouse SOLID (https://solid.dtu.dk/), which looks to exploit the synergy in methods and sciences across materials science, geoscience, bone research, forensics and archeology. We are looking for a talented, highly motivated, and creative scientist interested in working in a strong interdisciplinary environment. The successful candidate must have strong programming skills and preferably direct experience with the modeling and simulations of fluid or solid mechanics (for example by use of finite element/volume methods, discrete element methods or kinetic methods). Excellent English skills, both written and oral are required. The successful candidates must hold a PhD degree in either computer science, Earth sciences, mathematics, physics, or in related disciplines.

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 2-year position, position commencing 15 October 2023 or as soon as possible hereafter. Within these two years, the successful candidate will develop novel on-demand turn-on fluorophores for image guide surgery purposes.

The position focuses on the experimental implementation of quantum devices and their use for quantum simulation, based on gate-controlled quantum dots and superconducting resonators. Research involves the design of devices, supervision of nanofabrication, low-temperature physics using a cryofree dilution refrigerator, rf and microwave signal generation and detection, data analysis, interaction with theoretical physicists and scientific writing in English. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Physics or Applied Physics with relevant experimental experience and a track record within their fields, with experience with spin qubits, quantum-dot fabrication and/or high-frequency measurement considered a plus.

The Project HABTOX, funded by the “The Independent Research Council of Denmark”, offers a 2 year and 5 months post doc position in the adaptive significance of toxin production in marine microalgae. The project is a collaboration between the Marine Biological Section (MBS), University of Copenhagen, DTU, Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine and Plymouth Marine Laboratories (PML), UK. The post doc will be employed at MBS, which is located in Helsingør. While Helsingør will be the main workplace, the chemical analyses will take place at DTU.

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 2-year post-doctoral position in cellular biology to start in the Galvagnion group “Protein-membrane interactions in health and disease” 15 October 2023, or shortly after. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong expertise in fibroblasts and stem cell culture maintenance and differentiation as well as biochemistry. The purpose of the postdoc is to analyze patients’ bio-samples to reveal a molecular signature that, together with clinical data, will enable to stratify high risk iRBD individuals for conversion into different types of alpha-synucleinopathies. This project is part of the interdisciplinary consortium DEEPEN-iRBD including the Luxembourg Parkinson’s study.

There is an increasing demand for sustainable processing for example in terms of reducing of energy and water demand. Cleaning In Place (CIP) processes have a significant environmental impact, in terms of energy consumption (estimated at 20% of the total energy used in manufacturing), water usage and use of chemicals. There is a substantial risk in product quality and safety associated with reducing the intensity of CIP processes making optimization challenging. Monitoring tools and advanced data analytics at industrial scale provide an opportunity that can be augmented by using process models. The aim of the Position is to develop models that will enable optimization of Cleaning in Place (CIP) processes in the dairy industry. The research will use existing knowledge to develop physics based models to capture fundamental mechanisms at microscopic and macroscopic scales during cleaning and combined with data driven approaches. The research will benefit from models developed through an ongoing PhD programme.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with a strong background in experimental psychology and cognitive modelling. You will be working in the Human-Centered Computing Section, Department of Computer Science, University of Copenhagen (http://www.di.ku.dk) and the Cognition and Neuropsychology research cluster, Department of Psychology, University of Copenhagen (https://psy.ku.dk). The human visual system is remarkable. It can single out objects quickly and monitor our surroundings. Yet, seeing changes between two mostly identical scenes is difficult and critical visual information is sometimes missed. In the research project funded by the Villum foundation, we will investigate the prevalence of and remedies to these limitations in augmented reality (AR). We will validate the application of existing models of visual attention to AR, developing new experimental paradigms for measuring and modeling visual attention. These will extend the current experiments on visual attention to realistic tasks. The resulting insights on attention will then be used to prototype AR systems that improve vision, including finding objects and detecting changes in complex scenes. Finally, we evaluate the usability of the prototypes for end users and their support for visual problem solving. The outcome of the project is demonstrators of augmented vision, as well as basic research in AR and models of attention.

Biochar is produced from biomass in a process called pyrolysis, and the carbon it contains remains stable in the soil for hundreds of years. Biochar soil amendment is one of the few technologies that can sequester carbon in large quantities. However, there are also a range of other potential benefits of biochar: 1) production of renewable energy, 2) biochar can reduce emissions of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and may reduce nitrate leaching, and 3) biochar can improve soil physical properties, helping to increase crop productivity and reduce nutrient losses and pesticide leaching. The work of the postdoc will be associated to two projects working on different aspects of biochar soil amendment, MitiChar and BioStore, both funded by Innomission partnerships (Innovation Fund Denmark). The tasks will include investigating the stability of different biochars and their ability to mitigate emissions of N2O, as well as their interactions with chemicals in the soil.

The larger project investigates what it means to feel, think, and act as part of a we. Its guiding hypothesis is that a systematic account of the we must be embedded in a more comprehensive investigation of selfhood and social cognition. The project will systematically develop this hypothesis by combining cross-disciplinary theorizing with historical scholarship. In particular, it will draw on seminal contributions from classical phenomenology. In addition to philosophers, the project also involves social scientists (from social anthropology, sociology, social psychology, and clinical psychology). The postdoc should be a political theorist broadly conceived (incl. political philosophy, political science, political sociology, and political psychology) who is working on nationalism and theories of nationhood and/or political identity and identification. During employment, the candidate should engage with the following set of questions: What is involved in coming to experience oneself as a member of a political community or as part of a national we? What factors allow for the constitution of a transgenerational we? What ensures social cohesion among members of a national community or group solidarity within political communities? The newly established Novo Nordisk Foundation Quantum Computing Program (NQCP) is building a talented and diverse international team to create a cutting-edge program in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. At the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, where the formulation of Quantum Mechanics was born 100 years ago, the ambition is to build a mission-driven full-stack approach which will involve exciting innovations at every level, from the quantum processor to the quantum-classical interface all the way quantum algorithms and applications.  The vision of the programme is to enable the development of fault-tolerant quantum computing hardware and quantum algorithms that solve important problems in the life-sciences. NQCP is looking for a motivated postdoc to develop the framework we use for resource estimation. This role is anchored in the Algorithms & Applications area of the programme but extends out to interface with the hardware efforts that are underway. Broadly the programme is both algorithm and hardware agnostic, so a key question to be answered is whether there are combinations of algorithms (and thus use cases) and hardware specifications that will offer particular advantages when employed together.

We need to produce nutritious and accessible food for our growing population without exhausting our planet and its people. The vision of my group Plant Bioengineering is to bridge molecular, agricultural and food sciences to create the crops of the future! We are looking for a postdoc with expertize in plant molecular biology and gene editing to join our mission and bioengineer the crops of the future. Most of our food comes from only a dozen of plants, making our food system highly vulnerable to plant pests, diseases and climate change. In nature, there are thousands of plants with potential to be part of a future diverse and resilient agriculture, but many of them contain unpleasant compounds. In the Back to the Future project led by Pablo D. Cárdenas and funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, we work to develop the wild plant Chenopodium album as a new crop. Its seeds have high protein content and were eaten in Denmark during prehistorical times, but contain bitter and anti-nutritional chemical compounds called saponins. We have established a unique collection of C. album from all over Denmark and characterized their protein and saponin contents. In Back to the Future, we combine molecular, agricultural and food sciences to understand the molecular basis of saponin biosynthesis, its bitterness and plant domestication to develop C. album into a valuable plant for future food security. Altogether, Back to the Future will serve as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate the potential of domesticating local wild resilient plant species to diversify our food sources and support the green transition in our food system.
