PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Sustainable power systems

The recent years’ development towards increasingly weather-based electricity production, together with an ever greater integration of the electricity system in Europe, has meant that the work in the control rooms for power systems will become increasingly intensive. In the future, operators will have to work more pro-actively to ensure that the frequency and voltage of the electric power system stay around nominal values, thus guaranteeing that consumers have access to the sustainable electricity they need. This urgent and highly topical problem is relevant for those who want to investigate how the control room for electric power systems of the future should be organized and how the computer systems should be designed so that the operators will have useful and adapted interactive information systems.

(16) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Reliable structures and optimization

The project concerns development of new methods for reliable design against fatigue, with simultaneous optimization. The probabilistic description is due to variations in the material, but also in the design variables to be chosen by design and in a number of stochastic parameters (e.g. loads). This project has a focus on time-dependent loads and finite life. The optimization is usually minimizing the weight, but there can also be other objectives. At KTH Solid mechanics, methods have been developed that can be used as a starting point in this project. The research is to a large extent of a fundamental nature, but with applied goals. The work is mainly carried out at KTH, but collaboration with industry is also included. The project is interdisciplinary with its main part in solid mechanics and FEM computations, but it also includes statistics, programming and optimization. A suitable background is a master’s degree in engineering with a profile in applied mechanics, solid mechanics, or similar. If you are already familiar with all the subjects involved in the project, it is advantageous, but it is not a requirement. The project’s goals will primarily be achieved with numerical computations, but verifying testing is also planned. The financing for the entire project comes from Scania. The employment includes approximately 15% teaching.

How to increase Brain Power – Secrets of Brain Unlocked

(20) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in filtering techniques

Filtering is a powerful tool in computational fluid dynamics that can aid in accurately and efficiently predicting the governing physics in simulations, leading to improved designs. Filters can enable data compression, damping unphysical oscillations, and revealing multi-scale physics such as in turbulence modelling. Smoothness-Increasing Accuracy-Conserving (SIAC) post-processing filters, are typically used to extract hidden information in certain numerical simulations, creating even more accurate representations of the data. They are flexible enough to incorporate information from experimental data. In the past, SIAC filtering has relied on B-splines and often has a tensor-product structure in multi-dimensions. This PhD project will focus on developing a multi-variate filtering framework for applications to general multi-dimensional geometries. The main application will be to data compression. The project will entail aspects from approximation theory, error estimation of simulation data, and contribution to the SIAC Magic ToolBox. The project will span theory, algorithms, and applications.  No pre-requite knowledge in filtering is required.
