PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Educating the Entrepreneurial Engineer
We seek to ignite in the new generation of engineers a strong entrepreneurial mindset developed by novel educational interventions. These interventions nurture their curiosity, challenge them to create multiple forms of value together with stakeholders, and become leaders who can tackle grand challenges and contribute to significant socio-technical change in society either as independent entrepreneurs, or as game-changers in existing organizations. In short, we investigate how the so-called ‘wide entrepreneurship education’ can be implemented for all engineers at the four technical universities in the Netherlands.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Data-Driven Predictive Maintenance of Complex Engineering Systems
In this project we aim to develop a smart maintenance decision framework for complex multi-component systems, specifically complex machines consisting of many heterogeneous maintainable units (components), which operate in an uncertain environment. Degradation, failure and repair are stochastic processes affected by uncertainty around operating conditions including environmental and usage factors. We envision the framework to be smart and deal with uncertainty by combining learning and updating methods with decision models based on robust optimization to support predictive maintenance planning driven by data from alarms, sensors and process logs. Such a decision framework shall enable robust maintenance policies to be developed so as to mitigate the effects of uncertainty which characterize real-life operation of high-tech systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD on “WIreless sensor Networks for urban Local Areas Surveillance” (WINLAS)
In the last few years tactical scenarios have changed significantly. More and more conflicts are nowadays placed in urban areas rather than in open field ones. As a consequence the requirements to support classical open field operations are sensibly different from those needed in military operations in urban terrain. The urban environment is significantly different that the utility of conventional sensing and communication platforms is rendered problematic.
The objective of WINLAS is to analyze and demonstrate how the environment perception can be improved by using new technologies (i.e. sensor networking and data management) in order to manage a big number of heterogeneous sensors placed in an urban environment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Advanced MV Power Electronics for Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production
Energy systems are facing a great challenge to meet strict CO2 reduction targets. This goes hand in hand with the need to integrate massive amounts of renewable energy into the electrical power grid. However, the inherent stochastic and intermittent nature of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, make it increasingly difficult to balance electricity production and demand. To tackle these issues, the surplus electrical power from renewable energy sources can be converted to green hydrogen via water electrolysis. This can serve as a large-scale long-term (seasonal) energy storage method, facilitates stabilizing the future power grid with 100% penetration of renewable energy, and provides large industrial clusters with green hydrogen.
