PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Reinforcement Learning for Intelligent Traffic Signal Control
Reinforcement learning (RL) constitutes a promising solution for alleviating the problem of traffic congestion and associated greenhouse gas emissions by producing adaptive traffic signal controllers that outperform conventional systems. However, the existing solutions are merely reactive. This project aims at developing a new generation of proactive traffic control approaches by integrating into a RL framework a novel fully-Bayesian context-aware traffic prediction model that can forecast the future evolution of traffic and provide uncertainty estimates for its predictions, while accounting for contextual information (e.g. about planned events, incidents and weather), traffic network flow theory and the traffic signal control actions. The core idea is that, by accounting for the effects of external factors on future traffic conditions, the RL agent can learn to be proactive and take preemptive measures to alleviate (or even mitigate) future congestion scenarios and reduce emissions. The successful candidate will explore new machine learning methods, particularly reinforcement learning, deep learning, and Bayesian modelling, for traffic signal control, which will be tested in highly realistic simulation scenarios to be implemented by the candidate in an existing open-source state-of-the-art mobility, energy and emissions micro-simulation tool during the initial stage of the PhD.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Recyclable Elastomers
Do you want to contribute to a sustainable future? Are you looking to establish yourself as a scientist? Then look no further! At the Danish Polymer Centre at the Technical University of Denmark, we are currently seeking a Ph.D. candidate to join a new Independent Research Fund Denmark-funded project focused on recyclable silicone elastomers from natural phenols. Silicone elastomers are used in many products, such as skin adhesives and soft electronics. Silicones are made from sand and are regarded as environmentally friendly materials due to their easy disintegration into the environment. However, their production from sand is highly energy extensive. It would thus be beneficial for society and the environment to make silicone elastomers from polymers/oligomers instead of starting from sand every time.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship in Metal-organic Nanostructure Engineering for Photonics
A 3-year PhD scholarship in Organic Chemistry and Photophysical studies is available starting from January 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are the most widely used inorganic nanoparticles for nanostructure-based materials. The synthetic engineering of organic ligands on the AuNPs leads to almost endless possibilities for tuning material properties (e.g. optical, electrochemical, photothermal, electronic, etc.), but an understanding of how ligand structure control the material properties is missing. Your role will be to design, synthesize, and characterization of new types of Au-organic nanostructures with engineered and optimised metal-molecule interaction. You will study their applications in nano-plasmonics, nonlinear optics, molecular electronics chemical sensing, and/or photo-induced chemistry. Characterization will include the elucidation of structural and physical properties, optical response (Raman scattering, infrared absorption, etc.), electronic structure and charge transport – both at the ensemble and individual nanoparticle level. Many experiments will be performed at EPFL in Switzerland. Your work will have significant impacts on the understanding of AuNP chemistry and hybrid Au-organic photo-physics and will clarify the correlations between chemical and electronic structures and the ensuing nanostructure properties. You will actively disseminate your results in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Bioinformatics Applied to Pangenome Graphs
In this position, you will develop algorithms and computational methods to deal with the analysis of large datasets from modern and ancient sources. More specifically, these algorithms will be aimed at developing novel methods using pangenomes graphs. Traditionally, sequencing projects used a single linear reference genome to conduct analyses. While this approach has yielded exciting results, a lot of work remains to fully exploit the power of pangenomic graphs. The Modern and Ancient Genomes group at DTU are pioneers in terms of developing probabilistic inference methods on pangenome graphs. The position involves computational methods development which means that a large portion of time will be dedicated to algorithm development and coding, likely in C++.

PhD position summary/title: PhD project on Fabrication and Physics of Semiconductor Nanolasers
We have an opening for an experimental PhD project in the Quantum and Laser Photonics Group. The project will focus on new types of semiconductor lasers for applications in quantum and information technology. In this project, we want to explore new regimes of laser physics by exploiting the concepts of Fano resonances and extreme confinement of light. The overall motivation is to realise a new generation of microscopic lasers with ultra-high speed, reduced quantum noise and near-unity quantum efficiency. This requires progress within several scientific disciplines, including the theory and modelling of light-matter interaction in nanostructures, nanofabrication and experimental characterisation of nanophotonic devices. The present project will mainly focus on fabrication and experimental characterization, but will also involve modelling and design.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Fire Safety Engineering
DTU offers a PhD scholarship in the domain fire safety engineering focusing on energy performance of buildings and associated fire safety challenges. Energy renovation of buildings often includes an exchange of windows, from traditional 2-layer panes to modern 3-layer windows with added reflective foil and perhaps argon gas, laminated (for security) or the like. Such renovation with more thermal insulation and energy-efficient glass panes has a twofold negative impact on the fire safety: on one side, the improved heat insulation gives rise to faster fire development in the early fire course and more severe temperatures of the fully developed fire; on the other side, low-energy multi-layered windows are known to not break as easily as older windows, which results in a lower ventilation and burning rate in the fully developed phase of the fire.
