The School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh invites applications for Research Associate / Postdoctoral position in machine learning and large language models. Large language models are playing a crucial role in the new generation of generative AI technologies, which have brought about significant changes and breakthroughs from a technological perspective. However, many of these models are complex and incredibly extensive, comprising millions of parameters that are difficult to comprehend. Early evaluations suggest that these models often provide inconsistent answers. They do not conform to mathematical or logical principles, although they do exhibit some level of logical reasoning. In general, they are unreliable when constructing or requesting for explanations.

We seek candidates to join the dAIEdge project – working towards the development of machine learning and AI methods for edge devices. This would be suitable for machine learning or machine learning systems researchers in computer science, engineering, or from other disciplines.  The successful candidate will have a strong machine learning portfolio, and a knowledge of computer systems. The researcher will engage in cutting edge research in the field, and develop strong networking across Europe in the AI Edge arena.

With a total cost of 1.51 million pounds, the overall objectives of this Fellowship are to advance our understanding of fundamental spectral techniques, to investigate new spectral algorithms for fundamental graph problems in different settings, and to implement and evaluate these algorithms on large-scale data sets occurring in practice.  Specifically, the fellowship consists of four interconnected objectives: (1) Improve the state-of-the-art for spectral sparsification, and design new algorithms for spectral sparsification applicable in more practical settings; (2) Improve the state-of-the-art for graph clustering, and design new algorithms for graph clustering applicable in more practical settings;  (3) Advance the spectral theory of directed graphs, and new mathematical tools for designing spectral algorithms; (4) Develop an open-source algorithmic library for the state-of-the-art algorithms for spectral sparsification and graph clustering.

This Research Associate position will contribute to the CoTide: “Co-design to deliver Scalable Tidal Stream Energy” project, while based within the Institute for Infrastructure and the Environment at the University of Edinburgh, which is funded by the EPSRC and in collaboration with colleagues at Universities of Oxford, Edinburgh and Strathclyde. Together, a team of around 35 researchers and academics from these centres will develop holistic integrated models covering all aspects of tidal stream turbine design from hydrodynamics, through structures and fatigue, to reliability. This role is concentrated on the interactions of tidal stream turbine devices with the environment. In alignment with a specific workstream on tidal stream Metocean, Environment and Ecology aspects, this position aims to address key research challenges and inform the co-design process of tidal devices over the range of conditions they are expected to operate.

Applications are invited for the post of Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Computational Finance in the School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh. The post is available from 8th January 2024 for a fixed term of 2+1 years, full-time contract. The position is funded during the first two years by the IORH grant: “DeFi risk metrics via multi-agent simulations”. The PDRA is to work in interdisciplinary fashion with researchers in both Informatics and Mathematics. This project will develop principled risk management systems to improve economic security in decentralised finance using established tools from financial mathematics / quantitative finance / stochastic control / game theory augmented by agent-based and reinforcement learning based simulations. 

The post is funded by the ERC grant “Non-compact Chern–Simons theory, Positive Representations, and Cluster Varieties”. A research position in the Centre of Cardiovascular Science. The successful applicant will use a combination of in vivo and in vitro techniques to explore mechanisms regulating human and murine brown adipose tissue activity to determine the therapeutic potential of activating this tissue as a treatment for obesity and associated metabolic diseases. 

To contribute to the completion of a body of work funded by a Kidney Research UK project grant entitled ‘Investigating the mechanisms of injury and repair in the human kidney at the single cell level’. The post-doctoral fellow will work with the experienced principal and co-investigators to perform single-nuclei RNA-sequencing in samples from healthy, injured and repairing kidneys. In addition, the post-doctoral fellow will work with the single-cell transcriptomic core facility to perform spatial transcriptomics to understand where key cell types are located within the kidney. This work will identify the cells and molecular pathways that mediate both injury and repair in the human kidney, highlighting new therapeutic approaches for kidney disease. 

We are looking for a developmental cognitive neuroscientist with a commitment to improving the lives of children and their families through research. You will contribute to behavioural and neuroimaging data collection from infants and 5-year-olds as part of a UKRI MRC-funded programme that aims to discover new strategies for improving outcomes of children born preterm. You will be supported by a team of researchers working together in a programme of research.

Applications are invited for three Postdoctoral Research Associate positions at the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics, to work on scattering amplitudes motivated by collider and gravitational wave physics and the broader context of quantum field theory.

This position will contribute to the STFC Consolidated Grant ST/X000494/1 ‘Particle Theory at the Higgs Centre’. Research activities will be oriented towards LHC phenomenology, and in particular the determination of PDFs, working as a member of the NNPDF collaboration. The position is initially for two years with possible extension to three depending on funding constraints.

This position will contribute to the STFC Consolidated Grant ST/X000494/1 ‘Particle Theory at the Higgs Centre’. Research activities will be oriented towards formal developments and precision lattice QCD calculations, e.g. for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and for (semi-)leptonic decays with QED corrections, with both heavy and light quark flavours. The calculations are to be performed, in part, using resources from the national supercomputing facility DiRAC.

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position with experience in plant synthetic biology and/or plant physiology is available in the laboratory of Prof. Alistair McCormick at the School of Biological Sciences, University of Edinburgh. We are looking for 3-year postdoc, funded by the Simons Investigator award of Prof Nick Sheridan. The theme of the grant is homological mirror symmetry, and its relationship with (open and closed) Gromov-Witten theory, the Gamma conjecture, Lagrangian cobordism groups, and Chow groups. The IMP2ART trial is fully recruited and the researcher will continue to deliver the implementation strategy to intervention practices, undertake end of trial data collection, and collect and analyse data for the ongoing process evaluation. This post holder will work closely with two researchers from Sheffield and QMUL, and the Programme Manager in Edinburgh, and will take a lead on report writing, publications and dissemination.

We are looking for a molecular biologist with a passion for understanding the role of RNA-binding proteins in antiviral defence. The post will involve performing state-of the-art techniques to decipher novel roles for human antiviral proteins. Ideally, the candidate will have a strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry, in addition to computational data analyses skills of -omics data. The host lab will train the candidate in virology, and specific biochemical techniques if required.

The postholder will be co-supervised by a team of experts in molecular simulations, machine learning potentials, compiler architectures (Dr Julien Michel, Dr Daniel Cole, Prof. Fernanda Duarte, Dr Tobais Grosser). The postholder will coordinate efforts closely with an international consortium of OpenMM developers based in the US and the EU. The postholder will contribute to the provision and delivery of training to a growing community of users of OpenMM in the UK and beyond. The goal of these positions is to advance our understanding of galaxy evolution, focusing on massive galaxies and chemical abundances in the high-redshift Universe. We are looking for two highly motivated and talented Post Doctoral Research Associates to conduct key laboratory research utilising Synthetic Biology and genome editing approaches to engineering CHO cells to optimise biologics production. The proportion of biologics within the medicines industry is currently estimated at 20 per cent, but it is growing fast and by the end of this year the global biologics market is predicted to reach a value of $319bn. 

The BBSRC-funded project involves a large grouping of scientists and clinicians in the Roslin Institute, and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh. The project will involve molecular dissection of key host-pathogen interactions associated with the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus, the major human and animal pathogen. In particular, the project will functionally investigate the adaptive evolution of S. aureus for specific host-species such as humans, cattle or chickens. An array of different techniques including genetic manipulation of bacteria, proteomics, and recombinant protein production will be employed in addition to appropriate in vitro functional analyses and infections. Importantly, the successful candidate will work closely with other scientists in a multi-disciplinary team.

We are seeking a talented scientist to work in the novel and exciting field of super-resolution microscopy to develop a detection method for proteins associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). 

A successful candidate is likely to have experience with either advanced microscopy methods, or have previously worked on protein aggregation disorders. Experience with single-molecule fluorescence techniques, programming (ImageJ, python, MATLAB, etc.) would be advantageous. The candidate should have an excellent academic track record commensurate with their career stage and experience.
