PhD position summary/title: High-performance computing compilation schemes using dynamic analysis.
In this PhD thesis, we focus in the inference of high-performance computing compilation schemes, thanks to dynamic analysis on a selection of execution traces. The PhD student will revisit the key ingredients of parallel/optimizing compilers: data placement, computation scheduling and partitionning and code generation. In particular, the PhD student will investiguate how to select execution traces to ensure code coverage and how to extrapolate the results of dynamic analysis to polyhedral compilation mappings.

PhD position summary/title: Advanced numerical schemes to understand SeismoElectric Effects and improve the characterization of geological reservoirs.
The objective of the thesis is to design an imaging technique based on SEE and to develop an imaging software on top of our direct simulation tool. In Luo et al. (2009) and Zhu et al. (2009), the authors show how an impedance kernel based on seismic signal measurements, can be used to generate an image of the subsurface and help identify material discontinuities and salt dome boundaries. This first‐order, direct use of seismic Fréchet derivatives is closely related to the popular imaging principle introduced by Claerbout (1971) in exploration geophysics.

PhD position summary/title: Leveraging the wealth of available data for network monitoring and troubleshooting.
In this thesis we want to explore a new approach consisting in leveraging the wealth of data available in the end user device as a result of her/his normal activity (passive traffic captures) and from passive measurements collected freely inside his device. These data, collected at almost no cost, is shaped according to what is going on inside the network, in the device of the user, and on the other side of the service provider. For example, a congestion will result in an increase in the packet delay, the loss rate of packets and a drop in the network throughput. Wireless problems result in almost the same behaviour.

PhD position summary/title: Smart Building of Software Variants.
The goal of this thesis is to develop what we call incremental build of configurations. Given a base configuration, we want to modify it (through the re-setting of some options values) and then build it without starting from scratch. Similarly, we aim to build a given set of configurations without starting from scratch each time. The promise is to dramatically reduce the cost of building software, a stressing topic when you think about the environmental and financial costs that companies and public organizations should have to bear.

PhD position summary/title: Algebraic Loop Optimizations.
In the field of automatic program optimization, iterative structures, or loops, are important targets, since they represent a significant part of the total execution time. This is the reason why many loop optimizing transformations have been proposed to make them faster. Such transformations are mostly addressing loop parallelization and the improvement of temporal and spatial data localities. They usually apply to a set of nested loops, called a loop nest. Examples of transformations are loop interchange, loop fusion or loop tiling.

PhD position summary/title: Decentralized control in large-scale fog computing infrastructures
The objective of this thesis is to study how the control functions of a fog computing can be decentralized and how a fog platform may be composed of large numbers of independent sub-systems that are potentially owned by independent entities. This will require the PhD student to list all the centralized control functions in a large-scale infrastructure such as Kubernetes, identify the most critical ones, and devise distributed or decentralized algorithms to re-design their organization in a more scalable and resilient manner. One interesting direction to address this problem — which remains to be (in)validated by the doctoral student is to design collaborative yet independent sub-systems which autonomously organize themselves to provide the required functions based on the principles of peer-to-peer overlays.

PhD position summary/title: Reduced modeling for PDE using deep learning
The subject is part of the construction of so-called scale models for plasma physics. The classical model is the Vlasov-Maxwell model which is very expensive to solve because it is dimension 6 and strongly multi-scale (we speak of strongly oscillating equation). One of the solutions is to build asymptotic models on the slow scale by taking the limit associated with certain small parameters which tend towards zero.
