The project involves generation and molecular characterization of breast cancer Patient Derived Organoids (PDOs). PDOs are generated from an individual patient tumor and are cultured as 3D organoids. The candidate will use PDO culture models and next-generation-sequencing  to evaluate PDO drug sensitivity and mechanisms of resistance.  These studies will provide valuable insight on PDO potential as precision health tools.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator (Dr. Gotte), the PDF works in a laboratory that studies viral proteins using biochemical and genetic techniques to understand their mechanisms and facilitate knowledge-based drug design. The successful applicant would be expected to perform experiments in addition to some administrative duties. While the Principal Investigator would be the direct supervisor, the PDF will eventually become largely independent with regards to their day-today activities.

The Elahi Lab is seeking an outstanding Immunologists for a 3-year Postdoctoral fellowship. The successful candidate will investigate specific concepts related to solid tumors and other immunological studies.

We are interested in exploring the underlying mechanisms linking immune dysregulation to diseases such as autoimmune type 1 diabetes and obesity-related insulin resistance, and cancer. We apply cutting-edge tools, such as multi-dimension flow cytometry, and RNA-seq, and metabolic profiling to study primary lymphocytes derived from animal models of autoimmune diseases and diet-induced obesity.

The projects to be undertaken are supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)/JDRF and the Cancer Research Society and will explore the impact of insulin resistance T lymphocytes in antitumor immune surveillance. Another project will investigate the underlying metabolic alterations in pathogenic vs regulatory CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in autoimmune diabetes.

Kar, affiliated with the Department of Medicine (Neurology), is a neuroscience researcher with vivid interest in Alzheimer disease pathogenesis. A postdoc position is available immediately to study calcium and redox signaling between the Endoplasmic Reticulum and Mitochondria in the Simmen laboratory (Department of Cell Biology, University of Alberta). The successful applicant will be studying the function of redox-sensitive ER proteins in this mechanism. These proteins localize to ER-mitochondria contact sites dependent on oxidation and reduction of cysteines. A special focus interest will be on the significance of this mechanism for the crosstalk between various CNS cell types, using co-culture approaches. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in chemical engineering, demonstrated experience working with catalysis (zeolite chemistry), and experience in operating high- pressure tubular reactor and knowledge of online analytical quantification techniques.  

A solid understanding of kinetics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, and numerical methods are expected. The Department of Oncology within the University of Alberta conducts basic and applied research into cancers and related diseases. This project will involve studying lymphatic disorders. This includes lymphedema and lymphocytic leukemias. The main goal of this research is to understand the molecular mechanisms of lymphedema and leukemia, microenvironmental factors that contribute to disease progression and treatment resistance. The successful fellow will be conduction research in cellular models of disease, animal models of disease and correlated these results with human biospecimens from patients suffering from lymphatic disorders.

Reporting to Dr. Andrea Haqq, Principal Investigator, the main focus of the Post-Doc position will be to complete a cross-sectional study with the aim to conduct untargeted metabolomics analyses to explore metabolic processes and pathways that may link gut microbiota alterations to host health in adolescents with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). 

The specific objectives of the study are (1) to comprehensively characterize the serum metabolome and gut microbiome in adolescents with and without PWS; and (2) to explore functional correlations between PWS metabolomic signature, gut microbiota profile, and clinical parameters of metabolic dysfunction (insulin resistance [Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance, HOMA-IR], dyslipidemia, and more). 

The Postdoctoral Fellow in Structural and Earthquake Engineering will be responsible for various tasks. This will include conducting research (30%) in the areas of structural resiliency, seismic design, and computational mechanics. They will collaborate with a team of researchers and engineers (20%), develop and implement analytical models (25%), and foster communication with off-campus partners (10%). Additionally, they will assist with research grant applications, contract proposals, and reports (10%) and organize conferences and events as needed (5%).

The Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute significantly to the successful conduct of multiple activities prioritized by the Scientific Office of the Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care. In consultation with the supervisor, the Postdoctoral Fellow will lead the design and implementation of knowledge synthesis and translation activities related to the strategic directions of the Integrated Provincial Team. We are looking for an individual with research experience broadly in the area of energy and environmental systems engineering. The Animal Cognition Research Group (ACRG) in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Alberta is hiring a full-time postdoctoral researcher to lead behavioural/neural research examining how learning and cognitive abilities allow animals to solve problems they face in the wild (e.g., foraging, how to know what nest to build). The Division of Gastroenterology, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta, is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Reasearcher with expertise in biomechanis, motion capture and data science.  The Postdoctoral Scholar will join a dynamic research team led by Dr. Puneeta Tandon and Dr. Margie McNeely. This position involves working closely with clinician researchers and our laboratory technicians on the design of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, grant applications and publications specific to the gut microbiota, GI infections, pathobionts and antimicrobial resistance testing. The Research Associate is responsible for (scientific and operational) data oversight from the point where data collection is complete through to access of processed data by members of the research team and production of research outputs. The Research Associate will assist with other aspects of management of the project as required.

This position will focus on the Alberta Workforce Resilience Study and support the ongoing TREC Measurement System (TMS). The TREC Measurement System (TMS) is an observational study in which data are collected across ~90 facilities from several thousand providers. TMS surveys are collected at approximately 18-month intervals, while data from residents is collected in annual and quarterly (RAI-MDS 2.0) assessments routinely captured in the nursing homes. The upcoming Alberta Workforce Resilience Study is an expanded wave of the longitudinal TMS observational study. It will run through 2025 and include an expanded cohort of LTC homes in Alberta.

We are seeking a Research Associate specialization in Agronomy. The purpose of the cereal agronomy research program is to generate knowledge and foster innovation to support the growth of Alberta’s cereal crop industry. The candidate’s primary role is to develop, coordinate, lead, execute and interpret research projects to generate high-quality scientific information for growers and the industry.

The successful candidate will work with the Principle Investigator Dr. Guillermo Hernandez-Ramirez with the department of Renewable Resources within the Faculty of Agricultural Life and Environmental Sciences.  This scientific position contributes to lead and coordinate research programs on cereal agronomy at the provincial scale. This involves developing new research questions, writing research proposals, securing funding, implementing and coordinating research projects, data analysis and interpretation, modelling of cropping systems, developing management recommendations for Alberta farmers, and publication of research findings in peer-reviewed journals.  The incumbent will collaborate with government, applied research associations, university and private industry researchers provincially, nationally and international crop commissions and scientific organizations to develop agronomic advice for cereals in all of Alberta’s major agro-ecological environments.

The main role of this position will be to lead the production of Health Evidence Reviews (HERs) at the request of government. It requires proficiency in systematic review (including critical appraisal and meta-analytic techniques) and scoping review methods; basic quantitative techniques; and qualitative approaches to collecting and analysing data. Strong communication skills are needed, since the position must interact with many different stakeholder communities. In addition to this main role, there will be  opportunities to engage in other research related to methods for assessing technologies, services and programs throughout their lifecycle and determining the broader social value of therapies for rare diseases as part of other grants held by members of the Unit.  Therefore, activities in which the research associate will be involved include planning, developing, conducting, implementing and disseminating research in the form of HTAs and other empirical work.
