PhD position summary/title: Doctoral position (PhD) on automated maintenance of machine-learning enabled systems
SnT is a leading international research and innovation centre in secure, reliable and trustworthy ICT systems and services. We play an instrumental role in Luxembourg by fueling innovation through research partnerships with industry, boosting R&D investments leading to economic growth, and attracting highly qualified talent. As the successful candidate, you will join the Security, Reasoning and Validation (SeRVal) group of the SnT, under the supervision of Prof. Yves Le Traon and Dr. Maxime Cordy. Machine Learning (ML) provides engineers with the prospect of producing data-driven software, with little manual code writing. We are at a turning point in the software industry, as key functionalities are no longer programmed in “the old fashioned way” but implemented by training ML models with data that reflect the expected system behaviour. This radical change offers a unique opportunity to further automate software production, subject to the condition that we can automatically maintain this combination of conventional code with ML models by developing accurate and actionable diagnosis and software update methods. One of the obstacle for adoption of machine-learning is the maintenance cost of the system after its deployment, hindering the benefit of machine-learning. The overall research objective is the automation of the corrective maintenance activities for Machine-Learning (ML) enabled systems. Indeed, we ambition to define a clear-eyed and principled methodology to automatically validate and maintain data-intensive software systems, with limited human intervention. The main challenge is coping with the specificity of systems blending conventional code-base with ML components, to (almost) automatically detect, localize and fix the faulty behaviours over time. We’re looking for people driven by excellence, excited about innovation, and looking to make a difference. If this sounds like you, you’ve come to the right place!

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral candidates in Statistics and Probability
The MATHCODA Doctoral Training Unit is a doctoral program covering a coherent set of themes around the ideation and study of novel mathematical tools for dealing with high-dimensional and complex data structures, with applications ranging from life sciences to engineering and finance. The main rationale behind our project is the necessity of training a new generation of researchers, possessing a full mastery of the mathematical tools that are needed for modelling and statistically analysing data structures displaying non-standard features, such as high-dimensional components, complicated topological structures, or long-range dependence. The proposed DTU will be led by seven supervisors from Luxembourg University – each of them a scientific leader, specializing in one or more facets of mathematical statistics, probability theory, and their applications. According to our vision, the interaction between the distinct research groups participating in MATHCODA will provide to the doctoral candidates an invaluably rich learning environment, as well as an ideal springboard for their subsequent careers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in Sustainability in Space – Designing Future Space Services and Infrastructure
The current servitization of space is introducing profound change, challenging established companies with new business models, and significantly lowering the entry barrier to space. New types of services such as Mission-as-a-Service, Satellite-as-a-Service, Constellation-as-a-Service, etc., are emerging at a rapid pace. This is just the beginning. The future might see a space infrastructure on which new space services could be built at low cost and risk, similar to business models enabled by the internet, cloud computing, etc. on Earth. Key enablers for such an infrastructure are communications and data infrastructures and new computing approaches such as edge computing, fog computing, cloud computing. These combined services and infrastructure elements (also called product-service system) could also lead to significant sustainability benefits via replacing physical products by services. Instead of developing a spacecraft which would impact the environment via its production, launch and space debris, various space assets and their capacities are efficiently used, reducing the environmental impact significantly (e.g. constellation shared between multiple users instead of each one launching a separate constellation). However, these new space services and infrastructure are largely unexplored to date, despite their huge potential.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. candidate in Sociology/Social Sciences
The PhD candidate will work in the newly established research team led by Prof. Dr. Kaspar Burger. The major objective is to examine how psychological, social, and institutional factors influence educational opportunities and outcomes from early childhood onward, and how these, in turn, shape human development and life chances. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, we integrate theories and methods from sociology, psychology, educational science, and policy studies. We collect empirical data and perform secondary analyses using longitudinal cohort data as well as international comparative data. The goal is to generate scientific knowledge that advances theory and informs the design of policies to improve the educational opportunities and life chances of vulnerable children andto enable all children to develop their abilities to their fullest potential.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on quantum skyrmions
Skyrmions are an example of a magnetic structure which can be characterized by a topological winding
number. They have been realized experimentally in ferromagnetic systems and have a significant potential for technological applications in data storage devices. While skyrmions have initially been studied in classical magnetic systems, recent years have witnessed a soaring interest in understanding skyrmions in nanoscale systems and even in quantum spin systems. The aim of this project is to study the properties of such quantum skyrmions, in particular their realization in frustrated magnets, quantum computing based on quantum skyrmions, as well as skyrmion superfluids. The project is funded by a grant from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) and will be carried out as a collaboration between the University of Luxembourg (UL) and Nanyang Technological University Singapore (NTU). The PhD student will spend up to 18 months at NTU and will be under the joint supervision of Prof. Thomas Schmidt (UL) and Prof. Pinaki Sengupta (NTU). After the successful completion of the PhD program, the PhD student will receive a joint PhD degree from both universities. The position is for up to four years and includes travel funds for visiting schools and conferences and for an extended research stay in Singapore.
