Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post Doc Associate

A postdoctoral position is available in the Bonachela lab (Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources, DEENR, Rutgers University), in close collaboration with the Bidle and Thamatrakoln labs (Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences, DMCS, Rutgers University), to investigate the phenotypic plasticity of phytoplankton viruses. The scholar will join a Simons Foundation project that aims to quantify and characterize the dependence of viral traits on the physiology of different marine phytoplankton hosts.
Building on recent empirical and theoretical developments (see You et al, Journal of Bacteriology 2002; Choua and Bonachela, AmNat 2019), the successful candidate will work with the research team to develop and advance protocols to study the plasticity of viruses that infect different Chaetoceros diatom host systems in culture. This includes culturing diatoms in chemostats under different growth conditions; conducting infection experiments; and assessing one-step infection dynamics using an array of diagnostic molecular techniques, such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), flow cytometry, and qPCR. With that information, the successful candidate will measure viral traits, and use statistical analysis to characterize how these traits depend on host physiology.
We are looking for independent, creative, motivated individuals with a strong experimental and molecular biology background, coupled with a keen interest in theory. The successful candidate will also be expected to plan and develop their research, and disseminate results at national/international conferences and high-impact journals. The Bonachela lab is highly multidisciplinary and collaborative, so the candidate will be expected to contribute to (and benefit from!) such an environment. The New Jersey area and, specifically, Rutgers and the DEENR and DMCS departments offer a vibrant academic life and multiple opportunities for personal and professional development.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doctoral Associate

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join the Max Tischfield lab. Our research revolves around two key areas: (1) understanding circuit mechanisms and the neuropathogenesis of Tourette syndrome and related conditions (OCDADHDASD) using genetic mouse models; (2) the development and functions of brain waste clearance systems, specifically understanding the development, integration, and maintenance of meningeal lymphatic vessels with the glymphatic system. Applicants have the opportunity to work in EITHER focus area, but we are especially interested in candidates who wish to work in the field of Tourette’s and related neurodevelopmental/neuropsychiatric conditions. About Rutgers University, New Jersey, United States – Official Website

Rutgers University formally known as Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a public land-grant research university based in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Chartered in 1766, Rutgers was originally called Queen’s College. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States, the second-oldest in New Jersey (after Princeton University), and one of the nine U.S. colonial colleges that were chartered before the American War of Independence. In 1825, Queen’s College was renamed Rutgers College in honor of Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose substantial gift to the school had stabilized its finances during a period of uncertainty. For most of its existence, Rutgers was a private liberal arts college but it has evolved into a coeducational public research university after being designated The State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey Legislature via laws enacted in 1945 and 1956.

Rutgers today has three distinct campuses, located in New Brunswick (including grounds in adjacent Piscataway), Newark, and Camden. The university has additional facilities elsewhere in the state, including oceanographic research facilities at the New Jersey shore. Rutgers is also a land-grant university, a sea-grant university, and the largest university in the state. Instruction is offered by 9,000 faculty members in 175 academic departments to over 45,000 undergraduate students and more than 20,000 graduate and professional students. The university is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, the Association of American Universities and the Universities Research Association. Over the years, Rutgers has been considered a Public Ivy.
