Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: NEUROMODULATION OF FEEDING-RELATED NEURAL CIRCUITS

Postdoctoral positions are available (open until filled) to explore neuromodulation of neural circuits influencing feeding-related motivation and reinforcement in the laboratory of Dr. Andrew Lutas. The Lutas lab aims to understand the timescales by which monoamines, hormones, and peptides influence the ability of environmental stimuli to trigger feeding, which can lead to the development of obesity. To do so, we leverage optical approaches (multiphoton microscopy, fiber photometry, and optogenetics) that allow us to track and manipulate biochemical signals concurrent with neural signatures of spiking in the same neurons across days to months. One research direction of interest to the lab is how medications for diabetes and obesity acutely or chronically influence neural circuits controlling reward seeking behaviors with the aim of improving current medications and uncovering new treatment options.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: THE ROLE OF DNA REPAIR IN THE REPEAT EXPANSION DISEASES

A postdoctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Karen Usdin, Gene Structure and Disease Section, LCMB, NIDDK, to study the unusual mutation responsible for the Repeat Expansion Diseases. This group of 40+ human genetic disorders include Huntington’s Disease, Friedreich ataxia and the Fragile X-related disorders (FXDs). These diseases all result from an increase or expansion in the number of repeats present in a disease-specific microsatellite. We have shown that a variety of DNA repair factors including those involved in mismatch repair and double-strand break repair are required for expansion in a mouse model of these disorders (see Zhao and Usdin, 2021 for a recent review). A role for these factors in human repeat expansion is supported by emerging GWAS and transcriptomic studies. We are interested in identifying other factors involved in this process and understanding how these different repair factors interact to cause mutation and thus disease pathology. We are also now in the process of translating some of our earlier findings to reduce expansions in preclinical model systems. Our work is not only relevant to the etiology of the Repeat Expansion Diseases but is already beginning to provide useful insights into normal DNA repair mechanisms.

A postdoctoral research position in the fields of immunology and translational cancer research  is available in the laboratory of Dr. Raffit Hassan, Thoracic and GI Malignancies Branch, CCR, NCI, NIH. The Hassan lab is focused on developing effective therapies for solid tumors, with an emphasis on malignant mesothelioma. The major focus of Dr. Hassan’s research is to develop therapies targeting mesothelin, a membrane glycoprotein over expressed in several solid tumors. The laboratory findings form the basis of hypothesis driven clinical trials that are conducted at CCR by Dr. Hassan’s clinical team. The co-relative research utilizing samples and data obtained from the clinical studies are carried out in the laboratory to gain mechanistic insight and develop more efficacious therapy. Currently, the lab is focused on developing mesothelin targeting adoptive cellular therapy. The objective is to bring this therapy to clinical practice. Applicants will gain specialized experience in executing multidisciplinary correlative studies around ongoing clinical trials such as, studying tumor micro-environment and mechanism of resistance to CAR- T cell therapy.

Deadline : March 22, 2022 or until filled.

About The National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA – Official Website

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. It was founded in the late 1880s and is now part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The majority of NIH facilities are located in Bethesda, Maryland and other nearby suburbs of the Washington metropolitan area, with other primary facilities in the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina and smaller satellite facilities located around the United States. The NIH conducts its own scientific research through its Intramural Research Program (IRP) and provides major biomedical research funding to non-NIH research facilities through its Extramural Research Program.

As of 2013, the Intramural Research Program (IRP) had 1,200 principal investigators and more than 4,000 postdoctoral fellows in basic, translational, and clinical research, being the largest biomedical research institution in the world, while, as of 2003, the extramural arm provided 28% of biomedical research funding spent annually in the U.S., or about US$26.4 billion
