PhD position summary/title: Two PhD Scholarships at the SDU Centre for Business History

Department of History at the University of Southern Denmark invites applications for two PhD scholarships at the SDU Centre for Business History, beginning on February 1, 2023. The SDU Centre for Business History is a research center established by the University of Southern Denmark and the Danish Museum of Industry. Researchers in the center specialize in Danish business history since the 19th century, and we have a special interest in understanding the complex histories behind the wide variety of strongholds in the Danish business system in the context of globalization and Europeanization: How were these strongholds developed in interaction with the surrounding society, and what are the characteristics of that form of capitalism that came to be the economic foundation for the welfare states in Denmark and Northern Europe?

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: The National Institute of Public Health at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is looking for applicants for a PhD scholarship within biostatistics and data science and with applications in nutrition

Weight loss trials in children are often attempting to detect relatively small benefits in the presence of relatively large and often somewhat unpredictable between-child variation. Therefore, unsurprisingly, in some cases such trials will lead to non-significant overall results even though they were designed and indeed powered to be able to detect a significant effect. However, there would be an urgent need for more insights on how to target interventions among children. The large heterogeneity present in such trials may also provide great opportunities, as evident in the emerging field of personalized nutrition. Heterogeneity may indicate that there could be some subgroups of children that would respond much better to an intervention than other children. The big question is often how to identify these promising subgroups in an exhaustive and systematic way.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Theoretical/Computational Chemistry

The research project will consist of – in roughly equal parts – theory/algorithm development and computational modelling within the cross field of theoretical/computational chemistry and molecular biophysics. The broad focus of the research project will be on studying electronic processes in complex and biological environments, and the developed methods will rely extensively on quantum mechanical formulations.

Specifically, the PhD candidate will develop and use biologically oriented computational and simulation techniques to unravel the molecular basis of optogenetics as well as develop rational design strategies for novel microbial rhodopsins possessing optical and mechanical properties for the benefit of the development of optogenetics as a tool to gain information concerning the function of the brain. The research project will be focused on the following three research aims:
1) Obtaining a molecular basis understanding of the working mechanisms in microbial rhodopsins when activated by light;
2) Development of rational design strategies for colour tuning of novel microbial rhodopsin variants; and
3) Development of rational design strategies for novel microbial rhodopsin variants that can be activated by multiphoton approaches.

PhD position summary/title: Declaration of interest – The Department of Clinical Research at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is looking for applicants for a PhD position in the field of audiology

Modern hearing aids come with many advanced functions and features. During the fitting process, standard settings are typically chosen, even though hearing aid users differ widely in the benefit they obtain from their devices. While some progress has been made in terms of personalizing hearing aid fittings based on audiological, psychoacoustic, and cognitive factors, considerable inter-individual variability remains unexplained. Subjective factors, which have generally received little attention, could play an important role in this regard. Indeed, recent research has identified self-reported hearing handicap as a promising predictor of hearing aid uptake, use, and satisfaction. However, this is not considered in audiological practice so far.
