PhD position summary/title: PhD student in social data science
The student will join the Uppsala University Information Laboratory (https://uuinfolab.github.io). This project studies the role of images in the spread and anchoring of political ideas, and ultimately how visual politics contributes to persuasion and shaping the political agenda. Visual politics is increasingly prominent in digital public spaces, where image-based (dis)information spreads effectively. We know that images are a powerful form of political communication, that visual communication is perceived as convincing and affects people’s perceptions of a variety of issues. At the same time, we still know surprisingly little about the actors who use images to promote political ideas, what mechanisms are at play, and even less what impact these activities have on public discourse. Your role in the project will be to develop and apply social data science research methods and methodologies that are suitable for analysing large-scale and complex visual spreading phenomena.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Chemistry, specializing in Microbial Chemistry
Your project will aim to generate strains of cyanobacteria with new capabilities in formation of renewable chemicals, specifically products from the terpenoid biosynthesis pathway. Terpenoids are a large family of compounds, with many different applications ranging from fuels to pharmaceuticals. In your research, you will identify and develop target pathways and enzymes to be incorporated in the cells, make genetic constructs and test them in model organisms at different scales, and evaluate the results. Molecular and biochemical techniques are used, at Uppsala University and in collaborations with other labs, to analyse the response of the cells to genetic and environmental changes, in terms of productivity, growth, photosynthesis, and other characteristics. The results are used to further develop the design of new, engineered cells, and to increase our fundamental understanding of cyanobacterial metabolism and limitations to productivity. You will also take part in an ongoing effort to improve the potential of cyanobacteria as biotechnological host organisms, developing synthetic biology tools for use in our model strains.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Chemistry – Specializing in Molecular Biomimetics
The research project is focused the metalloenzyme [FeFe] hydrogenase, and involves biochemistry, biophysics (spectroscopy and electrochemistry) and bioinorganic chemistry. The hydrogenase enzymes are central to hydrogen metabolism, as they catalyze the formation and oxidation of H2 gas. This chemistry is enabled by a biologically unique organometallic cofactor. An increased understanding of these enzymes is critical for our understanding of the biological H2 cycle, and its impact on human health as well as general biodiversity. Due to their remarkable efficiencies they are also intensively studied in (bio)technological applications. The project follows one of the major project lines in the group, which focuses on the biochemical characterization of novel examples of this diverse enzyme family. In parallel, it will also involve the development of new methods for studying their mechanism using advanced, time-resolved, spectroscopic techniques.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in ageing mechanisms in lithium-ion batteries
Ageing of automotive lithium-ion batteries has been a common theme of several generations of collaborative projects between the Swedish automotive industry and academia. This particular PhD-project will focus on fundamental and applied experimental studies to increase the understanding of the ageing mechanisms that occur in modern lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. Both prototype batteries and commercial cells will be used, and the work will take place within the framework of a larger project financed by the Swedish Electromobility Centre, and together with researchers at the Royal Institute of Technology and also together with a number of large industrial companies. More specific, the focus of the investigations will be on the mechanisms behind inhomogeneous ageing of the batteries. In practice, this means for example to cycle the batteries under specified conditions, and thereafter analyse the cell components with experimental methods. These will rely on electrochemistry, diffraction, and spectroscopy, but also other methods and experiments at synchrotron facilities may be applicable. In Uppsala, we will also focus on the development of sensors to improve the possibilities to obtain information from the batteries while they are being charged and discharged.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Energy Materials Physics
Materials found in a harsh environment, including materials exposed to outdoor weather, or materials found in electrochemical devices such as batteries or fuel cells are subject to corrosion. Corrosion is a common process that leads to material degradation and therefore there are both economic and environmental benefits of increased corrosion resistance. In this project, corrosion processes of new materials will be studied at an atomic level. A fundamental understanding of how corrosion is initiated and develops can be used to tune the material composition in order to increase the stability and corrosion resistance further.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in data security in distributed machine learning
Machine learning is becoming a key component in many modern devices and services, ranging from personal mobile devices to autonomous vehicles or smart grids. To improve the underlying machine learning models, it is often crucial that devices share data among each other or with a central authority. This raises several privacy and cybersecurity issues and it must be ensured that both user data remains safe and that user’s privacy is ensured. In this project, we investigate how these challenges can be addressed using modern privacy-preserving approaches such as federated learning, differential privacy and machine learning using encrypted data.

About Uppsala University, Sweden –Official Website
Uppsala University is a research university in Uppsala, Sweden. Founded in 1477, it is the oldest university in Sweden and all of the Nordic countries still in operation. It has ranked among the world’s 100 best universities in several high-profile international rankings during recent years. The university uses “Gratiae veritas naturae” as its motto and embraces natural sciences.
The university rose to pronounced significance during the rise of Sweden as a great power at the end of the 16th century and was then given a relative financial stability with the large donation of King Gustavus Adolphus in the early 17th century. Uppsala also has an important historical place in Swedish national culture, identity and for the Swedish establishment: in historiography, literature, politics, and music. Many aspects of Swedish academic culture in general, such as the white student cap, originated in Uppsala. It shares some peculiarities, such as the student nation system, with Lund University and the University of Helsinki.
Uppsala belongs to the Coimbra Group of European universities and to the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities. The university has nine faculties distributed over three “disciplinary domains”. It has about 44,000 registered students and 2,300 doctoral students. It has a teaching staff of roughly 1,800 (part-time and full-time) out of a total of 6,900 employees. Twenty-eight per cent of the 716 professors at the university are women. Of its turnover of SEK 6.6 billion (approx. USD 775 million) in 2016, 29% was spent on education at Bachelor’s and Master’s level, while 70% was spent on research and research programs.
Architecturally, Uppsala University has traditionally had a strong presence in Fjärdingen, the neighbourhood around the cathedral on the western side of the River Fyris. Despite some more contemporary building developments further away from the centre, Uppsala’s historic centre continues to be dominated by the presence of the university.
