PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Aerosol technologies for bioaerosol sampling, detection and risk management
The research is related to development of aerosol technologies for bioaerosol sampling, detection and risk management. Bioaerosols, including airborne bacteria, viruses, fungi, and fragments of these organisms pose risks to human. Even minute amounts of inhaled bioaerosols may cause adverse health impacts such as infectious diseases, allergic diseases, reactions to toxins or irritants. Emerging hazardous components such as antibiotic resistance genes and metal resistance genes highlight the evolving risks due to bioaerosols. Our group is engaged in development of various sensors targeting biological pollutants, which has strong synergy with aerosol technologies for bioaerosol sampling, detection and control.

The project focus is on the development of sensorized soft structures. The focus of the project is the development of thermo- and chemoresponsive thermoplastic elastomers to be able to print a multi-sensing structure. The project is in collaboration with EPFL.

This project is part of our joint efforts with NCCR MARVEL in the computational design of new advanced materials for laser 3D printing applications. At the same time in LAMP, we apply extensive expertise in process design, monitoring, and control as well as state-of-the-art multiphysics modeling and machine learning techniques towards designing Digital Twins for Laser Metal 3D printers, significantly reducing the trial-and-error experimental efforts in simultaneous process<->material optimization (https://www.empa.ch/web/s204/modeling-simulations).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on the “combinatorial development of multi-functional ceramic thin films”
The development of many next-generation technologies requires thin films and coatings, which exhibit more than one functionality. In this research project, we are targeting the development of novel ceramic thin film materials that are capable of this feat. Such materials may combine favorable mechanical properties, such as high hardness or scratch-resistance, with other functionalities. These can range from high transparency and electrical conductivity to their chemical stability or even their piezoelectric response. Applications of such coatings range from simple optical components such as lenses to more complex devices such as MEMS or displays. The materials of interest for this study mainly include ternary and quaternary nitrides and oxynitrides. Simultaneously optimizing multiple functional properties in these materials is a complex challenge with many variables. To accelerate this process you will employ high-throughput combinatorial materials science techniques.
